Chapter 660
Chapter 660: Chapter 660
The term "glib-tongued" has always struck Yang Fan as a rather exaggerated description.
But after listening to Wei Jin’s words, he gained a whole new understanding of the idiom.
This is what it means to be glib-tongued.
That Chen Zhong could resort to such extremes, committing so many evil deeds yet still kept tightly concealed, shows his deep understanding of society’s rules, and his cunning application of them, allowing him to trample on the law with ease.
However, in this matter, Wei Jin clearly had the upper hand; his seemingly kind words completely blocked Chen Zhong’s path. In such a situation, would Chen Zhong dare to gamble? He would not dare!
Wei Jin was sure Chen Zhong wouldn’t gamble, and after listening, Yang Fan felt the same.
He had no other choice but to trust Wei Jin’s words and take a chance.
The only loophole was the premise of giving up the pursuit and killing of Yang Fan and Zhang Yulan!
But would he do that?
Wei Jin thought not, and Yang Fan also believed Chen Zhong wouldn’t dare to do so.
Why was Chen Zhong so adamant about killing Yang Fan and Zhang Yulan? It was because they held the very evidence that could spell his doom, and even if he navigated past this hurdle, that bomb might still explode on some future day.
Therefore, taking advantage of the moment to quickly kill Yang Fan and Zhang Yulan, then dealing with the remaining mess was undoubtedly the best choice in Chen Zhong’s mind. He also had to consider that if he spent all his money and even lost his current status, he would be even less capable of dealing with Yang Fan and Zhang Yulan later.
But as long as Yang Fan and Zhang Yulan were alive, holding evidence of his crimes, they could at any time send him back to prison for a forced euthanasia, never to be released.
Wei Jin had simply woven a logical loop for Chen Zhong.
He had no other choice.
After deliberating on the matter, Yang Fan was completely convinced by Wei Jin.
Even if this man hadn’t learned any real skills, just with his wits alone, he could make a fortune telling fortunes at the hospital entrance by bamboozling people, undeniably outdoing those mendacious old men who pretend to know it all.
After listening to him, Yang Fan also noticed something.
Wei Jin seemed to excel at organizing scattered and fragmented information, turning it into a weapon for himself.
"Boss Wei’s change of thought has truly saved my life!" Yang Fan said teasingly. "If I were to use the slang from the internet that young people use, I couldn’t resist wanting to kowtow andthank my benefactor."
This amused both Wei Jin and Old Zhou, who both burst into laughter.
Wei Jin waved his hand and said, "Brother Fanzi, calling me a ’godfather’ is going too far, but I think I can live up to being an ’older brother.’
"To be frank, I’ve always been superficially cordial with those people, maintaining good cooperation and keeping up my connections, just to make my mundane wealth. But Brother Fanzi, you’re different. Although we’ve only met once or twice, I’m genuinely old pals with Old Zhou, which by extension makes you my younger brother."
"Moreover, we’re both in the same line of work. When the time comes that it touches upon your field of expertise, I believe you’d also be willing to save my life."
"I’ve relied on Brother Wei a lot, but there might not be many chances for me to help Brother Wei," Yang Fan said with a sense of guilt.
"Brother Fanzi, being overly modest can be quite detestable; that’s enough," laughed Wei Jin.
Old Zhou raised his hand to interrupt the two, "Enough with the mutual commercial flattery between you two. Overdoing it is just as detestable, and listening to it makes me truly uncomfortable. We’re all brothers here, no need for all this politeness."
"Come on, let’s drink and celebrate Chen Zhong the old bastard’s demise in advance!"
Tinkling sounds resonated as three wine glasses met in a toast.
Yang Fan didn’t bring up how he should thank Wei Jin; this wasn’t the right time to talk about it.
How exactly to thank Wei Jin, Yang Fan would have to discuss with Old Zhou later.
Just then, Zhang Yulan and Ye Tong walked out hand in hand from the backyard, chatting and laughing like sisters.
One tall and elegant, the other voluptuous and charming, together they were like a pair of precious orchids and peonies blooming side by side, dazzling the eyes and sending the heart fluttering.
"I recognize the younger sister-in-law, but Fanzi, who is this..." Old Zhou looked Zhang Yulan up and down before asking.
It seemed he was smitten once again.
By now, Yang Fan was all too familiar with Old Zhou’s look.
"She’s Chen Zhong’s first wife," Yang Fan said in a low voice.
Old Zhou was stunned for a moment, and Wei Jin suddenly sat up straight.
Both their eyes were glued onto Yang Fan in an instant.
"Chen Zhong’s wife here at your place... give me a moment to process this." Old Zhou felt his brain wasn’t quite keeping up as his features scrunched together in a burst of frantic thinking, then he looked at Yang Fan with shock.
"Holy shit... Fanzi, dude, you’re awesome, you really are awesome! I’m so impressed I could bow down before you right now. Just like you said, I’m almost ready to kneel and recognize a godfather. I’m really curious, how on earth did you manage it?"
"Chen Zhong wouldn’t happen to want you two dead because of this, would he?"
Wei Jin, though also shocked, reacted with much more restraint compared to Old Zhou.
It was probably because his health wasn’t great, which made him somewhat more indifferent to such matters; he didn’t have as intense an emotional reaction as Old Zhou. Raising his hand, he pressed down towards Old Zhou and laughed, "Old Zhou, I can speak on Fanzi’s behalf for this. Chen Zhong is not someone who would harbor a killing intent over something like this; he’s all about calculating risks and benefits."
"To kill Fanzi and this lady over this issue... for Chen Zhong, the downsides greatly outweigh any benefits. It would be a bad deal. At most, he might hire someone to teach Fanzi and the lady here a lesson but would definitely not leave a handle on himself over this."
"But, I must admit, Brother Fanzi, you really are impressive."
Zhang Yulan’s cheeks turned crimson from their teasing, her blush blossoming like peach flowers in March.
However, she was seasoned in social settings; shy as she might’ve been, she still carried herself with a grace and composure.
"You both look very familiar to me, this gentleman must be the renowned Mr. Wei, and in that case, you must be Old Zhou?" Zhang Yulan’s lips curved in a polite smile as she extended her hand toward Old Zhou and Wei Jin.
Her recognition was spot on.
Avoiding Zhang Yulan’s outstretched hand, Old Zhou said, "Sister-in-law, Fanzi’s here, so I dare not touch your delicate hand."
"Same here!" Wei Jin said, nodding with a smile.
Old Zhou teased, "Brother Wei, you should have said ’me too,’ it sounds better that way."
"I have a reputation to maintain, after all, I’m someone with a bit of standing in Xin’an. At least leave me some dignity," Wei Jin replied.
Old Zhou rolled his eyes, "What reputation do you have? You’re just a fortune-teller. In the past, we would’ve been considered the lowest of the low."
