Chapter 628: Chapter 628
Upon hearing what Yang Fan said, Xiang Xue Ting’s face suddenly became extremely grave.
Yang Fan rarely saw such an expression on her face.
She had always been a girl with a somewhat careless and optimistic nature. Even when her family faced big troubles, she remained very calm and optimistic. But with this issue, Yang Fan could clearly see she was truly worried.
However, this matter was indeed no small affair.
"Brother Fanzi, you’re really in trouble now," Xiang Xue Ting murmured after a long while.
Even her breath through her nostrils seemed heavier.
Yang Fan nodded, "It’s a pity, I don’t have much choice. Now that it has come to this, I will absolutely not hand those things over. If I don’t, there may still be leeway to maneuver. But if I were to hand those things over, my death would be certain."
Xiang Xue Ting nodded, "You absolutely can’t hand those things over. Find some time tomorrow to make a copy for me. I need to think about how to start dealing with this matter. Now that it’s been brought to light, whether I consider my own position or help you, I must find a way to pull Chen Zhong from his post and make him pay for his deeds."
"Measure your capabilities!" Yang Fan said in a low and grave voice, "I have no right to dictate other issues, but you must not foolhardily charge ahead. We must leverage external forces in this matter, absolutely not act like moths to a flame or be the vanguards ourselves. If we two were to do so, it will surely not end well for us."
"With one hand from those people, not only will we not be able to achieve any results, but we’ll most likely be crushed to pieces."
In this matter, there was no exaggeration in Yang Fan’s words.
This situation was, in essence, even more serious than what Yang Fan was currently saying.
He had heard a lot about Chen Zhong and the power behind him from Zhang Yulan’s mouth.
In Xin’an, this was his territory, and he was one of the difficult people to deal with.
Xiang Xue Ting pulled back the corners of her mouth, smiling brightly, "I definitely won’t be that foolish, how could I rashly rush forward? I have some grasp of my own weight. To leverage is our only choice."
Yang Fan finally relaxed a little, glanced at Yao Wei and the police officer that came with Xiang Xue Ting, and lowered his voice even more, "Tomorrow, I will prepare a few USB drives, to split and organize those things into them."
"Brother Fanzi is indeed thoughtful, I got your point, I will be careful," Xiang Xue Ting said earnestly, "But you also be careful. For Chen Zhong, those things are like a knife on his neck. He will only let his guard down once he’s certain that nothing is missing and returns to his hands, otherwise, he definitely won’t let you off easily."
"I know, but it won’t be so easy for him to kill me," said Yang Fan.
"Alright, then I’m going to leave first, there’s a lot to do today, remember to call me if anything comes up." Xiang Xue Ting gestured to make a phone call, then she straightened her graceful and taut figure, swiftly walking toward the police car.
The police car, with its glaring red and blue lights, disappeared into the cramped alley.
Yao Wei and the middle-aged man who had been knocked unconscious by Yang Fan were taken away by Xiang Xue Ting as well.
Yang Fan stood there, lit a cigarette.
Having gone through so much, his mind felt numb.
All at once, he could barely remember many things and did not want to think about those troublesome matters.
Perhaps his nerves had been strained for so long that he felt some aftershocks when he suddenly relaxed.
After smoking three cigarettes in quick succession, the discomfort gradually faded away, and Yang Fan’s mind seemed to return to its original state.
He moved his hands and wrists, then called Wang Daqiang.
The day was about to dawn, and the east already showed some glimmers of daybreak.
The world was no longer pitch-black where you can’t see your own hand; it was slowly turning light, a dim gray, shifting from quasi-lightness to brightness.
The streets were also becoming lively. Sanitation workers in yellow vests were cleaning up the fallen leaves on the streets, the entrance to the breakfast shops was steaming with a fragrant mist, and stall owners were one by one transferring their goods out front, either neatly placing them at the storefront or on the shelves.
The city was awakening, but Yang Fan just wanted to sleep more than ever.
After allowing himself a brief moment of relaxation, fatigue hit him like a tidal wave, sapping the strength from his legs even as he walked.
Wang Daqiang rushed over, stood beside Yang Fan, and rubbing his eyes said, "Lu Qiuyang was taken away. What about Yao Wei?"
"He was almost killed. Lucky I got there in time to save him. He’s got a few knife wounds, but nothing too serious," Yang Fan said, turning his head to look at Wang Daqiang, "Shall we go get some pork intestine noodles? I’m suddenly craving it."
Wang Daqiang grinned and replied, "Let’s go!"
And so, the two made their decision swiftly.
Crossing the streets, they found a rice noodle soup shop getting ready to open in a somewhat secluded corner.
They ordered two bowls of pork intestine noodles and slurped them down amidst the gradually awakening streets and everyday life of the city.
Yang Fan belched contentedly and said, "Let’s go, time to sleep."
"Mm."
The feeling of a full belly made all the troubles seem to shrink significantly.
At the end of the street, Yang Fan rented a double room.
Upon opening the room, they flung their shoes aside and collapsed straight into sleep.
Both were so exhausted, they could hardly muster the energy to speak.
Wang Daqiang’s eyes were bloodshot from fatigue, but Yang Fan was slightly better off. His Inner Qi sustained his life force, so physically, he wasn’t as worn out, but he was mentally drained.
The matter with Chen Zhong made his scalp tingle just thinking about it.
When the heart is tired, the body doesn’t fare much better.
This kind of exhaustion was far more severe than the tiredness one feels after physical labor.
When he finally woke up, it was already evening.
Yang Fan woke up full of life force, and found Wang Daqiang sitting upright by the window smoking.
"Fanzi, you’re awake? You got a bunch of calls around noon, I didn’t dare to answer them. You might want to return them later," Wang Daqiang said.
Yang Fan took his phone and glanced at it.
Wow, there were at least a dozen missed calls.
From Little Mother, sister-in-law, Bai Mengzhu, and also Zhang Yulan.
Yang Fan stared at the string of missed calls and decided to return Zhang Yulan’s call first.
Zhang Yulan suddenly calling could be an indication of some urgent matter.
She usually sent messages instead of calling.
Yang Fan and Zhang Yulan frequently texted, usually communicating every other day, but they only called each other when there was something important.
"Fanzi, you’re not in any trouble, are you?"
The moment he answered, Zhang Yulan’s voice came through the phone, tinged with urgency.
