Chapter 185: The Younger Cousin is Missing
Chapter 185: Chapter 185: The Younger Cousin is Missing
"I’m sorry, okay?"
Xiao Yuan fiddled with her phone and stood up reluctantly, not even glancing at Yang Fan as she muttered an insincere apology.
Her attitude instantly added fuel to Yang Fan’s already agitated state, causing him to snort coldly and turn to leave.
Frustrated by what she saw, Fourth Aunt slapped her daughter’s arm hard.
"Mom, what are you doing?" Xiao Yuan snapped impatiently.
Fourth Aunt snatched the phone from Xiao Yuan’s hand, her face stern as she demanded, "Is that how you apologize?"
"I did apologize. I said I’m sorry, what more do you want? You can’t expect me to kneel down to apologize, right?" Xiao Yuan retorted sharply, glaring. "I was the one at a disadvantage to begin with, but you insisted on making me apologize. Now that I’ve done it, what more are you dissatisfied with?"
Fourth Aunt’s cheeks trembled with rage as she flung her hand and yelled, "Get out! I don’t have a daughter like you!"
"Fine, I’ll leave. I’m not your biological child anyway. Whether you want me or not is up to you!" Xiao Yuan snatched her phone and stormed off.
It wasn’t until her figure had disappeared behind the shadow wall that Zhou Wenhu hurriedly tried to defuse the situation, "Fourth Aunt, why are you doing this? Just let the kids handle their own conflicts. Look at you now, oh dear, you should really go after her."
Fourth Aunt was still fuming and didn’t notice Zhou Wenhu’s perfect timing.
She plopped down heavily into the wicker chair and waved her hand dismissively, "Don’t bother with her. She’s spoiled rotten by me and her father. It’s good for her to suffer a bit. It’s dark and confusing out there; where can she go? This is the countryside; she thinks it’s like the city, where running away from home means you can easily find a hotel to stay in. Not so simple."
"Fourth Aunt, that’s not the way to discipline a child," said Zhou Wenhu with a troubled look on her face.
Wei Juan sat to the side, tempted several times to go after Xiao Yuan but, seeing Zhou Wenhu’s expression and Ye Tong’s calm demeanor, she silently sat back down. She was confused by the situation, but sensed that Ye Tong and Zhou Wenhu seemed to deliberately avoid intervening.
"It’s okay, you all don’t interfere. She’ll get scared and come back on her own soon enough!" Fourth Aunt said.
"But can we really just not worry? I’m scared to go out at night when it’s pitch dark," Zhou Wenhu tried to persuade with difficulty.
Fourth Aunt’s face was stern as if she had fully determined to teach her daughter a lesson. "She definitely won’t go far. Just ignore her. Let’s continue with our conversation."
"Well, okay then; I’m just worried that the kid doesn’t know her way around and might get into an accident," Zhou Wenhu said uneasily.
"Apart from falling down a couple of times, what kind of accident could happen? Just let it be," Fourth Aunt insisted with a wave of her hand.
Yang Fan had no idea that a conflict had erupted between the mother and daughter over the apology as he had already gone into the bathroom.
He closed his eyes and let the warm water run over his head, gradually calming his restless heart, which had been racing like a runaway horse.
Life and death are decreed by fate, wealth and honor are from heaven. Although the conflict with Hetian Gaofei and his associates had now reached a point almost of life and death, Yang Fan thought it through and realized he wasn’t entirely powerless to counter them.
He actually wanted to borrow Zhang Yulan’s influence but had just troubled her recently to deal with Shen Lin, and Yang Fan felt somewhat embarrassed.
After vigorously wiping the water droplets from his face, Yang Fan made up his mind.
He’d first stand his ground firmly; if he could force Wang Tianbao and Hetian Gaofei to back down, that would be ideal.
If they insisted on causing trouble, he’d turn to Zhang Yulan then.
He rinsed the hostility from his body with hot water and treated the cut he had gotten earlier before heading straight back to his room.
Although he had resolved the matters in his mind, his physical weariness remained.
At this moment, he wouldn’t care about anything else and just wanted to collapse on his shabby bed.
Lying on the bed, Yang Fan switched on Chen Zhong’s old phone.
When he had nothing else to do in the evening, he would flip through these old phones of Chen Zhong, searching for the secret pleasures of the high and mighty.
The local boss with a strong penchant for collecting and a careless disposition had little secrets in almost every phone that made Yang Fan click his tongue in astonishment.
Most of these secrets were about women, of course.
In one of the phones, he had sorted an album filled exclusively with nude photos of women.
Moreover, this guy had reached such levels of idleness that he had even rated these women.
He compared them in every aspect from appearance, personality, and body shape to tightness and their attitude during business, with unsettling detail.
After looking through so many, Yang Fan also discovered one of Chen Zhong’s peculiar preferences.
The guy had a thing for married women.
Among all these photos, only two unmarried women appeared; the rest were all married young wives.
Just as he was enjoying his perusal, Zhou Wenhui suddenly burst through the door, charging in like a whirlwind.
Startled, Yang Fan hurriedly turned off his phone, pulling up the covers with his knees to hide the telltale tent he had pitched.
"Little Mother, what are you doing? I’m sleeping; aren’t you afraid you might see something you shouldn’t?" Yang Fan shouted indignantly.
The lack of respect for his privacy from these two living ancestors at home left him utterly speechless.
"What shouldn’t I see? Show me!" Zhou Wenhui said irritably, "It’s just a tiny matter, you think I haven’t seen it before? Ashamed in front of me? What nonsense are you ashamed of!"
Yang Fan: ...
Facing his domineering and fierce Little Mother, Yang Fan was lost for words.
She really seemed to have seen it before.
But... this thing, it’s fundamentally different.
Just as Yang Fan was about to defend himself, Zhou Wenhui suddenly lifted his blanket, "Get up quickly, go find your cousin!"
Yang Fan quickly grabbed the tent, "Little Mother, you... don’t mess around."
Zhou Wenhui glanced at the place Yang Fan was covering and said with irritation, "What are you doing? Aren’t you tired? Running around outside all day and you still have the energy for manual labor? Aren’t you afraid you’ll play yourself to death? Do you think your body is made of iron?"
Faced with Little Mother’s barrage of reproach, Yang Fan immediately shut down.
"I didn’t, this... this is just a natural reaction!"
Zhou Wenhui sniffed disdainfully and said, "It smells like you really haven’t done anything, but the way you’re acting all guilty makes it clear it’s not because you haven’t, but because you haven’t had the chance to."
Yang Fan: ...
If there was a hole in the ground right now, he would definitely dive in and hide himself as tightly as possible.
How did he end up with such a Little Mother?
Could it be that in her eyes, there was nothing left in this world worth caring about?
"Enough already, just stop, Little Mother!" Yang Fan shouted in exasperation, "What were you saying just now?"
He didn’t dare go on.
Who knows what more outrageous things his fierce Little Mother might say if he kept on trying to argue his case.
"Your well-bred cousin is lost, get moving and find her!" Zhou Wenhui said with a teasing glint in her eye, arms crossed.
