Gao Lanlan’s convenience store was located right at the edge of the village entrance, which Yang Fan passed by almost every day.

A row of brick houses was divided into four sections: one was a store, two were mahjong rooms, and Gao Lanlan herself lived in the remaining one. Behind the house, there was also a small courtyard used for piling up firewood and other miscellaneous items.

Gao Lanlan’s family lived in the village, and it wasn’t far for her to return home. But Gao Lanlan hardly ever went back, and spent most of her time here.

"Three hundred yuan isn’t too little, but could he just be agreeing verbally? That lad has quite a reputation in the village. If he lets out about us, I’m truly done for," Liang Bing said with some uncertainty.

"If you’re so afraid, why do you provoke me?" Gao Lanlan asked in irritation.

"Aren’t you afraid of rumours spreading?" Liang Bing murmured.

"So what’s your suggestion then?" Gao Lanlan’s tone suddenly rose, clearly showing her impatience.

After a long silence, Liang Bing finally said, "I’ll find a chance to give him a few more hundred, have him write a note. If the word gets out, I’ll make it his problem. Both carrot and stick."

Upon hearing this, Yang Fan inwardly sneered, did this guy really think he was in charge?

Carrot and stick indeed, if he doesn’t make threats, that’d almost be bearable.

If he even slightly threatens, Yang Fan guaranteed he would spread the word so widely everyone would know.

"Look at how capable you think you are. Stay away from me for a while. Go to your wife. It’s only been once or twice; it sounds like I’m sneaking into your bed everyday. If you’re that scared, go hide somewhere cool and leave me in peace," Gao Lanlan disdainfully said.

"That’s not what I meant. I’m just saying let’s be careful," Liang Bing softly tried to pacify.

"Being careful means you keeping your distance, isn’t it? You come here every other day, even if Fanzi doesn’t say anything, how could others not suspect?" Gao Lanlan said in a huff.

Liang Bing muttered, "But I can’t bear to leave you..."

"Stop it, I’m not joking with you," Gao Lanlan said.

Liang Bing fell silent again, and it took a while before he said, "To be safe, that’s indeed the best strategy. Just bear with it for a few days, and I’ll make it up to you later."

"Spare me, do I need your doting? Just go," Gao Lanlan impatiently started to send him away.

Yang Fan deliberately made some noise outside, then lifted the curtain and entered the store.

He was eager to see what Liang Bing, the guy who threatened him with both carrot and stick, would look like now upon seeing him.

Not surprisingly, Liang Bing’s expression subtly changed the moment he saw Yang Fan.

There was awkwardness, along with some anxiety and unease, as if he didn’t know how to speak to Yang Fan anymore.

"Brother Liang is here too? You’re quite early!" Yang Fan deliberately greeted him with a smile.

Liang Bing was obviously nervous. He stepped back a bit, distancing himself from Gao Lanlan before managing a forced laugh, "It’s raining and there’s nothing much to do, so I thought about coming over for a few rounds of mahjong, but it turns out a few guys are still asleep. Xiao Gao and I were just chatting casually."

He even went out of his way to explain.

Yang Fan smiled, "Rainy days, indeed, there isn’t much to do. I wouldn’t mind joining Brother Liang for a couple of rounds, but it seems we two alone can’t make a full game."

"Forget it, I won’t wait any longer. I have to head up to town soon," Liang Bing forced a laugh, then suddenly asked, "What brings you here, Fanzi?"

Yang Fan feigned surprise as he responded, "What else could I be here for at Sister Gao’s? Obviously, to buy something."

Liang Bing left hastily, only glancing at Gao Lanlan before hurriedly exiting and speeding away in his car.

Yang Fan watched Liang Bing drive off with a strange expression and deliberately asked Gao Lanlan, "Sister Gao, why do I feel like he has some grudge against me? I don’t think I’ve offended him, have I?"
