Chapter 94: 74, Save people_2
The spies’ faces changed. They had seen countless Jianghu knifemen, passing through like a school of fish, but they had never come across a Swordsman who could wield a broken knife with such ease.
There was no sword energy, no mysterious techniques of the Executive Officer, just the opponent gently waving a short knife, and their own steel knife would snap like an icicle!
Bai Li, restrained by the spies, stared blankly at the figure. The other’s face was covered in black charcoal powder, and their gaze felt especially alien, yet their silhouette seemed oddly familiar.
Then, she suddenly realized that this dark assailant, moving agilely, seemed to have some trouble wielding strength in his right leg.
The person appeared aware that his right leg was a weak point, so he did his best to conceal it. Yet, with a severe injury on the leg, no matter how much he concealed it, it was still noticeable.
Bai Li thought of someone, someone with an injury on his leg too...
But no matter what, she couldn’t reconcile the image of her home’s neighborly apprentice, sweeping floors, with the ruthless assassin before her.
It was as though the two figures, one in light and the other in shadow, were filled with contradictions.
Bai Li’s expression turned complex.
At that moment, she saw the spies detach hand crossbows from their waists and aim at the figure, causing her to cry out in alarm, "Watch out, crossbows!"
The battlefield fell suddenly silent. Chen Ji propped up the arm of a spy, using the corpse as a shield in front of him. He peered out from behind the hanging head of the dead spy, quietly observing the short crossbows in the spies’ hands.
The spy, pierced through a lung lobe, was helplessly coughing up froth.
The coughing spy, the calm assassin hiding behind him to evade the crossbow arrows, one still and one in motion, were both exceptionally cruel and mysterious.
Bai Li watched this and felt the answer in her heart grow uncertain again... The person in her memory always smiled as if he would never utter a harsh word, who, even when doubted, would only bow his head in silence, without retorting.
At this moment, the spies sought a chance to launch their crossbow arrows but found no angle from which to shoot.
In a stalemate, the coughing spy finally closed his eyes, his hand that raised the knife slowly fell, and the long knife slipped from his grasp.
Chen Ji promptly discarded the short knife and caught the falling long knife.
As he caught the knife, a crossbow arrow shot towards the half of Chen Ji’s exposed face.
A blur in everyone’s vision, but they saw Chen Ji just slightly tilt his head to dodge the crossbow arrow. By the time the arrow struck the wall behind him, Chen Ji’s head had returned to its position, still hidden behind the dead spy, calmly staring at everyone.
Just as the spies were about to restring their hand crossbows, Chen Ji pushed the corpse forward, charging recklessly. Crossbow arrows were launched, either embedding in the body or missing entirely.
Closing in!
Chen Ji discarded the body, emerging from behind it to take on four spies at once, entwining in combat. Now and again, the spies’ long knives would snap off in response to his movements.
The spies had never felt so powerless, facing an assassin who seemed to have not a single flaw, with every move providing full protection, defense as impregnable as a fortress.
Even with four against one, they couldn’t find the opportunity for a lethal strike.
Not to mention a deadly blow, their blades could at most nick Chen Ji’s clothing, leaving not a single wound.
The spies didn’t recognize this Sword Skill. On the Jianghu, there were only a few well-known sword techniques, but this impervious one they witnessed was unheard of.
Little did they know, when Chen Ji fought with Feng Huai, a slight lapse would lead to seizing the moment; one slip could mean another death for him.
This frantic, extreme tempering meant that Chen Ji’s first lesson was not to attack, but to defend.
Only by not dying could he counterattack.
The spy restraining Bai Li pressed the knife against her throat, "Put down your knife, or I’ll kill her right now."
But Chen Ji acted as if deaf, still engrossed in his own battle, his long knife not pausing for a moment.
The spy froze, delivering the Commandery Princess to the inner prison was one thing, but killing her right here was another.
He clenched his teeth and suddenly released the Commandery Princess, wielding his knife to aid his comrades.
With no one to restrain her, Bai Li didn’t run but stood there, anxiously warning, "Watch your back!"
The supporting spy sliced diagonally, chopping towards Chen Ji’s back.
Hearing the warning, Chen Ji sharply turned, swinging the knife with his body!
Meeting head-on, two long knives collided, and as Chen Ji twisted his wrist, his blade slid up against the incoming edge, sparking as they rubbed together.
Dazzled by the sparks, before the spy could respond, Chen Ji’s long knife swept up in a backhand arc, slicing from arm to neck!
Blood spurted!
Chen Ji looked at Bai Li and the Princely Heir, his voice firm, "Go, don’t hold us back here!"
The Princely Heir was about to say they should all go together when Bai Li, pursing her lips, pulled him to climb the wall, "Hurry, we can’t help him here, only distract him! If we go, he can too!"
"Oh, oh," the Princely Heir quickly turned to flee.
A spy tried to follow but was cut down by a slash from Chen Ji.
He crouched, blade extended, blocking the way under the courtyard wall, his cold gaze stopped all the spies. Droplets of blood fell from the blade, the polished surface reflecting the blood-red moonlight above.
As the Princely Heir climbed over, Bai Li perched atop the wall looked back dirt-smudged, her expression complex as she considered those who had fled and the solitary figure still in combat, she said earnestly, "Take care of yourself!"
With that, she leaped down the wall and ran.
The courtyard quieted, leaving only three spies in a fan shape, firmly cornering Chen Ji against the wall. They slowly shifted their stance, seeking a weakness in Chen Ji but found none.
