Grand Voyage : Surviving on a Ghost Ship -
Ch. 154 - White Island
đ˘ New Novel Launch!
The next day, Yang Yi woke up and stepped out wearing his newly upgraded captainâs uniform. The outfit was originally a high-quality item, providing a small boost to Agility, considered top-tier among quality-grade armour.
But it came with a major downside: it would continuously drain Sanity unless the wearer had very high Spirit stats. Because of that, almost no one aside from Yang Yi dared to wear the captainâs uniform â no one wanted to go insane without warning.
After the upgrade, the outfitâs appearance hadnât changed much, except that the dark brown bloodstains had turned bright red, as if they had just been freshly dyed. The stats had also been further enhanced.
ăName: Bloodstained Pirate Captainâs Uniformă
ăType: RelicăăQuality: ExcellentăăDescription: This outfit once belonged to a self-important fool.ăAgility +2. Wearing it continuously drains Sanity. Immune to this effect if Spirit is 9 or higher.Upon donning the uniform, Yang Yiâs Agility stat jumped from 6 to 8. However, the stat bonus from this outfit couldnât exceed 10, significantly limiting its overall impact on Yang Yi. If his base Agility stat increased further, the outfitâs bonus would become nearly negligible.
âI wonder if god-tier gear can break the +10 stat cap,â Yang Yi muttered.
He had a way to test this, after all, he had a full set of god-tier armor on hand. If he put it on, it might give him a boost in attributes. But the side effects were severe, and Yang Yi wasnât too keen on getting turned into a human pincushion.
He checked the ocean map, and it showed less than 200 nautical miles to the target island. It wouldnât take long for the shape of the island to appear on the crystal orbâs sea chart.
The ocean had returned to calm, the sweet scent in the air having vanished too. That was expected, since he was about 1,800 nautical miles away from the Bountiful Sea.
Yang Yi picked up his fishing rod, planning to catch a few fish while the ship travelled, yet after nearly an hour of fishing, he didnât catch a single one, not even a teeny tiny one!
âSomethingâs off...â
Could it be that the waters beneath him were unusually barren?
Just as he was wondering, a fish finally bit the hook! Yang Yi pulled hard and reeled in a light yellow, slightly shrivelled salted fish, which flopped onto the deck and lay motionless.
ăName: Big Salted Fishă
ăDescription: A sea fish with an excessive sodium intake. Yet somehow it didnât die and continues to drift about the ocean in its salted state. Edible. It will flop and die as soon as removed from the sea. Nearly impossible to obtain a live specimen. Extremely salty, recommended for use as seasoning.ăâIt really is a salted fish?â
Yang Yi was surprised, even more so than that time he fished out a bottle of mineral water.
At the same time, the distant island, now just over a hundred nautical miles away, became visible on the crystal orb.
It was quite large, with smooth, clean edges, unlike any other island Yang Yi had seen before.
As the ship continued onward, the islandâs full shape became clear: perfectly round island, over 5 kilometers in diametre. However, on the open sea, an island that symmetrical was highly suspicious, unless it wasnât formed naturally...
Yang Yi informed Suna and told her to get ready. Then he began checking the supplies and gear needed for landfall. Once everything was confirmed, he began manually piloting the Nightmare Star towards the island.
No other player ships were in sight, suggesting that Yang Yi was likely the first player to reach this island.
Given how far it was from the Bountiful Sea, it actually made sense that no one else was around.
One hour later...
Suna had also changed clothes and geared up, ready to accompany Yang Yi onto the island.
Yang Yi handed her a crystal greatshield, instructing her to carry it on her back. That way, if they encountered an unavoidable attack, she could crouch with her back turned and still get decent protection.
As for the risk of turning oneâs back on the enemy? That was nothing to worry about â Yang Yi would take care of them.
They sailed for a while longer. Yang Yi climbed up to the crowâs nest and used a telescope to scout the distant island.
âI really need to buy a better telescope. This oneâs worse than my Third Eye at long distances, totally useless...â he muttered.
But it wasnât the time to shop.
As they approached, Yang Yi finally got a clear view of the island, and his brows furrowed deeply. It was snow-white. Both the ground and the vegetation were white, coated in familiar granules. The environment closely resembled the hallucinatory vision he had during the salt bath, only this place wasnât as vast, and the granular surface wasnât as loose. It was highly likely that the white granules were salt. Perhaps due to the humidity or rain, the salt had partially solidified, unlike the loose salt sands from the vision.
He watched for more than ten minutes but didnât see anything moving or suspicious on the island.
The terrain was flat, and there were no trees, only sparse white branches sticking up from the ground like defoliated shrubs. They werenât very tall, but it was unclear if they were even plants...
Seeing nothing more, Yang Yi climbed down and handed the telescope to Suna, occasionally sweeping the island with his Third Eye.
âYou think thatâs salt?â Suna asked.
âYeah, it looks like it.â
âThen do you know about saline-alkali land and the Dead Sea?â
âI know the Dead Sea isnât actually a sea.â
Suna shook her head.
âAlong the Dead Seaâs shoreline, youâll see this salt frosting phenomenon. It happens because of extremely high salt concentration, salt precipitates out from the seawater.â
âOne of the reasons itâs called the Dead Sea is because there are no fish at all. Almost nothing can survive in it. And the land around it is all saline-alkali wasteland, barren and lifeless, like a dead zone.ââYouâve been to the Dead Sea?â
âOnce. And I cut my foot on sharp salt crystals near the shore. It was awful, not fun at all.â
Suna replied with a hint of distaste, clearly recalling an unpleasant trip. Yang Yi, meanwhile, remembered the giant salted fish he caught not long ago. The drop in fishing success was likely linked to this island! The salinity of the surrounding waters was probably extremely high.
He checked the draft of the Nightmare Star and, sure enough, it was riding higher in the water. But thanks to the gameâs system, ship handling remained stable unless it was overloaded, which is why Yang Yi hadnât noticed until now.
A salt island... If they could harvest the salt, it could mean serious profit. However, remembering the salt-based lifeforms he saw in the hallucination, he figured this place probably wasnât as simple as it looked. He didnât believe for a second that it was just a salt island.
After another thirty minutes of sailing...
The Nightmare Star began to slow down, because the island was visible to the naked eye.
Yang Yi didnât immediately dock. As was his habit, he decided to circle the island first, observing it from all angles.
The coastline was unusually smooth and uniform, even slightly polished.
From a birdâs-eye view, the entire island looked like the dome of a massive jellyfish floating on the sea, with a bunch of chaotic white twigs sticking out of it. There were no large targets in sight, not even big rocks. Everything was covered in salt.
