Chapter: The Storm and the Serpents

...The blizzard howled like a war horn across the mountain pass, but it was no match for the growing silence that fell upon the cliffside.

At the far side of the forest, facing the mouth of the ancient cave of the Medusas, stood hundreds of masked warriors, all clad in dark, rune-etched armor. They held their positions in eerie synchronization—soldiers of the Grand Order, the most feared and secretive force in the continent’s holy crusade.

And at the very front of them stood a towering, broad-shouldered figure dressed in full black—his armor void of symbols, his presence overwhelming. His mask was carved into a permanent frown, its lips tight and curved downward with unyielding judgment. He didn’t need to speak often.

But when Frown raised his hand, the entire legion readied their weapons.

Their goal was simple. To get the Red anchor stone that had shown itself here. However, the soul energy enchanted map they used to track anchor stones stated that they were in fact, two anchor stones within the cave.

Meaning the red anchor stone was here, and another. Even Eli, the queen of the Medusas was not prior to this knowledge.

Frown stared at the luminous shield around the mountain—an ancient array woven from serpent blood and moonlight magic. The barrier crackled with violet runes and hissed with primal, living intelligence.

This was an incredible array. One that even made Frown feel jealous. How could such a primitive tribe that was used as an exotic source of pleasure for nobles be capable of such an advanced Array.

It was like cave men knowing how to make weapons of iron. It should be impossible.

What Frown did not know was the capability of the backer of the Medusas.

Frown’s voice rumbled like thunder.

"Begin the assault."

They attacked with precision and power—crossbows lit with soul energy flame, shock spears that cracked the air with divine fury, conjurers launching spells designed to fracture mountains.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Explosions rang out without stop. But the array didn’t budge.

Instead, it retaliated.

From the glowing cave shield erupted phantom serpents—not illusions, but ethereal spirit beasts birthed from the protective array enchantments. They slithered and coiled through the snow, glowing like starlight, tearing into the Order’s ranks. Soldiers screamed as spectral fangs passed through their armor, draining their very life force, to in turn feed the array even more.

The Core of this Array was the Red Anchor stone of destruction. And it displayed its might.

Some of the Grand Order tried to retreat. Others fought valiantly, only to be consumed in a violent burst of serpentine flame.

Inside the cave, deep behind the array’s mystical barrier, a small sanctuary thrummed with energy.

Victoria sat cross-legged in the center of a circular array etched into the cave floor.

In the center was the red anchor stone of destruction. Her eyes were closed, her hands outstretched—connected directly to the pulse of the mountain’s defense system. Her entire body glowed faintly with violet light as the array used her mana as a conduit.

"Left flank," came a sharp voice beside her.

Queen Eli, majestic and serene, stood at a balcony carved from the rock, overlooking the snowy battlefield. Her sharp eyes tracked the movements of the enemy like a hawk.

"They’re trying to burrow under the west ridge. Redirect the storm serpents." Queen Eli gave directions.

But she was not the only one. Penny helped too. Helping on sides of the array that the queen could not cover.

This was why it was called an array. It could perform multiple tasks at once.

And with the Red Anchor stone in the middle to give out divine energy, they had a practical infinite source of energy.

If all was right, it was not possible for them yo lose this battle.

Victoria’s lips moved faintly. Her fingers shifted. And moments later, ghostly snakes burst through the rock and eviscerated the Order soldiers attempting the sneak assault aimed at a section where the array pillars were located. No doubt that these men were smart enough to have found out certain ways by which the array functioned.

They were not called the Grand Order for nothing.

Then again, the assault was still great.

But the Grand Order did not retreat.

They pushed harder. Fought more desperately. And they continued to die.

The air outside stank of unholy oil, scorched iron, and snow-melted blood. Smoke curled from burnt trees, and the once-white mountain pass had become a dark, muddy killing field.

At last, a masked soldier staggered through the chaos and approached Frown. His armor was dented. One eye was bleeding.

"Commander Frown," he said, panting. "We’ve... we’ve tried everything. The array isn’t falling. We’re being ripped apart out here. Orders, sir?"

Frown didn’t move for a long time.

Then, to the soldier’s horror... he chuckled.

It was a low, guttural, hollow sound—like something inhuman vibrating through a man’s lungs.

"You thought this was it?" he asked, turning his frown-masked face toward the soldier. "No. That... that was the opening act."

He turned slowly to face the cave.

"The interesting part..." he murmured, voice deep and hungry, "...is only beginning."

Shade, and the other medusas and nagas coild not peel their eyes from their windows.

The array was fighting a battle that would have left them with many scars and tears.

They had never seen incredible warfare like this.

"King Eros is really incredible. To think that he will be called of such a destructive array."

"Yes, with this array, no one can ever cross our snake tribes ever again."

The whispers amongst the women was everywhere. In fact, after tge initial fright from the continous attacks, it had become a thing of entertainment.

Some older Nagas and medusa even bet money on who was going to die next amongst the enemy’s forces.

They laughed and cheered for every huge explosion that left the Grand order in pain and screams.

Caren stood with her broad sword as guard for Victoria who wad in the center. She had a prideful smile at the praise of her man.

However, at such a time, Frown waved his hand, and from the snowy bushes, they were brought forward.

All eyes of the snake tribe was drawn there.

"Shit! That sly evil man!" Queen Eli cursed. Even Penny and Victoria frowned.

What where they going to do now?
