Chapter 40: Illix still holds his own

The crowd gasped in surprise, a mix of cheers and murmurs rippling through the stands at Trois’ unexpected move.

Illix’s eyes widened in shock as the fiery sting of the spices seared into his pupils, sharp and unrelenting.

His confident composure shattered instantly, replaced by panic as the burning sensation spread like wildfire across his face.

He stumbled backward, his steps uneven, his once-fluid movements now disjointed. His hands flew to his face, swiping frantically at his eyes as though he could claw away the pain.

"What—what is this?!" he gasped, his voice cracking with disbelief and frustration. His vision blurred into a haze of light and shadow, leaving him disoriented and vulnerable.

Each blink only seemed to intensify the agony, his reflexes sluggish and thrown completely off balance.

The chain, once spinning with deadly precision, now hung limp in his grip, its deadly momentum lost as Illix staggered in blind confusion.

The crowd roared in excitement at the sudden turn of events, their cheers echoing through the arena like thunder.

Gon gasped, his breath catching in his throat as he watched the scene unfold before him.

One moment, Illix was spinning his chain with practiced precision, completely in control, and the next, chaos erupted. Out of nowhere,

Trois had blown a cloud of fine spice directly into Illix’s face, the shimmering particles catching the light for the briefest moment before striking their target.

Illix staggered back, his confident demeanor crumbling as he clawed at his eyes in agony. Gon’s heart raced as he realized what had just happened.

The sting of the spice had blinded Illix, leaving him vulnerable and disoriented.

It was a move so unexpected, so cunning, that it left Gon both shocked and in awe of Trois’ quick thinking.

"How did she even think of that?" he muttered under his breath, unable to tear his eyes away from the unfolding drama.

Vision was an indispensable asset for any fighter, the foundation upon which their every move and strategy was built.

Without it, even the most skilled warrior could find themselves reduced to a shadow of their former strength.

The loss of sight meant the inability to track an opponent’s movements, to anticipate attacks, or to aim strikes with precision.

It was more than just an impairment—it was a crippling disadvantage that left them vulnerable and exposed.

For Illix, the sudden blindness was devastating.

His balance wavered, his instincts dulled by the disorienting haze that clouded his vision.

The chain that had once moved with deadly accuracy now hung uselessly at his side, its wielder unable to aim or react with any confidence.

To be without sight in a battle was to be almost completely defenseless, a truth that both the crowd and Gon understood all too well as they watched Illix struggle against his unexpected handicap.

Not only would Illix be unable to see incoming attacks to defend himself, but his blindness would also rob him of his stability and sense of balance.

Vision wasn’t just about spotting an opponent’s movements—it was the anchor that kept a fighter grounded, their body aligned with their environment.

Without it, Illix’s equilibrium was shattered, leaving him to sway unsteadily as he struggled to orient himself.

This made him vulnerable in more ways than one. Without the ability to anticipate or counter attacks, every blow aimed at him would land cleanly.

Worse still, his footing was no longer secure, every step an uncertain gamble.

A well-placed strike or a sudden shove would easily send him tumbling to the ground, leaving him completely exposed.

In this state, Illix was no longer the calculated, dangerous opponent he had been moments ago.

He was now at Trois’ mercy, teetering on the edge of defeat.

Fighting this girl was going to be far harder than Illix had anticipated.

The sting of the spices still burned his eyes, but what troubled him more was the realization that she fought with cunning as much as skill.

Her tactics were unpredictable, forcing him into a defensive position he wasn’t accustomed to.

Now, knowing the threat of her spice attack, he would have to be wary of looking at her directly—a dangerous disadvantage in a fight where every split-second counted.

And yet, an uneasy question gnawed at the back of his mind: what other tricks might she have up her sleeve?

This wasn’t a straightforward battle of strength or speed. It was a game of wits and survival, and Trois clearly excelled at both.

Trois grinned, the edges of her lips curling upward as she saw the hesitation flicker across Illix’s face.

She could see the cracks in his confidence, the doubt taking root in his stance.

This was her moment, the turning point she had been waiting for.

Her grip tightened on her sword, her body vibrating with energy as the adrenaline surged through her veins.

The pain in her side and arm seemed distant now, drowned out by the thrill of knowing she had him on the ropes.

She could feel the battle tipping in her favor. With Illix temporarily blinded, she wasted no time. She charged forward, her twin swords raised, aiming for the kill.

But Illix was no rookie. Even in his blindness, he wasn’t helpless.

He relied on his senses—his heightened hearing and the feeling of the wind on his skin.

He swung the chain in a wide arc, trying to force Trois back.

It was a desperate move, but it was enough to make her pause.

The chain crackled through the air, slapping against the floor with an angry hiss.

Trois hesitated for a split second. She had no idea where Illix was exactly, but she could hear him. He was moving. She needed to be faster.

She adjusted her stance, crouching low to the ground, her swords raised in a defensive position.

She took slow, steady breaths, blocking out the sound of the crowd and focusing solely on Illix’s movements.

She could feel him, his heartbeat pounding in the silence between them.

He was a cornered animal, desperate.

She sprang forward again, this time not relying on her swords alone, but on her instincts.
