Gonna Be a Demon King! -
Chapter 94: Fate of the Continent
Chapter 94: Fate of the Continent
The instant the lightning made contact with Carack’s flames, a chain reaction was triggered.
Flames and lightning ignited, detonating in violent bursts of energy that tore through the enemy ranks, consuming everything caught within their explosive reach.
Together, the four of them cut deeper into central Zlego, taking down any enemies in sight. But just as they finished dealing with the last of the berserk monsters, a sudden shockwave hit their bodies, sending them flying like ragdolls.
Xaren smashed through the remnants of a building, bringing the entire structure down on top of him.
The deafening roar of an explosion drowned out the sound of the collapsing debris, and when Xaren shoved the broken walls off his body and pushed himself to his feet, his eyes widened at the sight beyond the swirling dust around him.
Up in the distance, a towering mushroom cloud bloomed into the sky, casting a dark shadow over the battlefield.
For a moment, he and the others looked on in stunned silence.
Then, a booming voice echoed across the land, carried by the immense magic power of the speaker.
[All Low-Rank demon units are to retreat immediately. I repeat, all Low-Rank demon units, withdraw from the frontlines.
FALL BACK!]
Hearing the order, Xaren, Ilya, Carack, and Bjorn immediately turned and began sprinting northwards, back towards what was left of Zlego’s northern gates.
Behind them, more explosions shook the air, and when Xaren glanced up, he saw waves of demons diving out from the hovering airships above.
They streaked across the sky like meteors, colliding with angels in mid-air, each impact unleashing massive surges of black and white energy that distorted space and tore up the landscape in blinding flashes.
Seeing this, Xaren immediately understood the reason behind the sudden retreat order.
It wasn’t because the demons were outnumbered like last time.
’We’re retreating because the Mid-Rank demons are taking FULL action now.’
Up to this point, only a handful of the Mid-Rank demons present had been fighting. The majority had been in the airships hovering above.
But now, hundreds were pouring into the battlefield, clashing against the Mid-Rank angels who had stepped up in droves as well. The overwhelming energy they unleashed while fighting would annihilate legions of Low-Rank demons in mere seconds, just from the shockwaves alone.
As such, they had to retreat, or they’d be caught in a slaughter that none of them could resist.
They sprinted through Zlego’s broken streets, ignoring the scattered groups of humans, elves, and angels that still tried to block their retreat.
Whenever a formation tried to stand in their path, Xaren simply thrust out his hand and unleashed a wide burst of repulsive gravitational force, blasting them aside like twigs caught in a hurricane.
No one bothered engaging or trying to finish them off. They all kept heading towards the north.
Soon, the broken northern walls of Zlego came into view, reduced to little more than crumbling rubble.
Beyond them was the kilometre-wide ravine that had once acted as a natural barrier for the city, which had been filled at the start of the attack to create a levelled path for the demons to cross over.
Many retreating demons charged across it in massive tides, thousands of them pouring over the levelled ground, heading toward the far end of the ravine where a secondary defensive line was quickly taking shape.
Xaren and the others sprinted across as well, their boots pounding against the cracked and uneven earth, joining the swelling mass of demons forming ranks at the new line.
It was not perfectly organized yet, but it was solid enough to hold if the situation demanded it.
’Not that it would...’
The thought crossed Xaren’s mind as he fell into position under the barked orders of a captain-ranked demon directing the flow of retreating troops.
Above Zlego, the sky turned into a living nightmare, a brutal clash of forces that embodied the endless interracial wars of this universe that Xaren knew all too well.
Enormous bursts of black and white light tore through the skies, splitting clouds apart and sending down shockwaves so powerful that the ground at their feet shuddered and cracked. The Mid-Rank demons and the angels had taken over the battle now, their confrontation so violent and overwhelming that even though they fought high above the city, the ripples of their power could still be felt with terrifying clarity.
There were no clear shapes visible in the battles above, only the flashes of blinding light and the deafening sound of explosions ripping through the sky.
It was a battle beyond sight and understanding for the majority of the Low-Rank demons, except for those with far more years and experience on Xaren’s batch of Low-Ranks.
The fighting did not stay confined to Zlego and its surrounding forests.
As the Mid-Ranks clashed with everything they had, their battles spilt over beyond the city’s shattered borders, deeper into the territories still occupied by Zorix natives, the same territories the defenders of Zlego were fighting to protect.
The cities that the Magic City had been built to protect were obliterated without mercy, crushed beneath waves of stray magic and falling debris.
Civilian casualties soared into the tens of thousands as entire regions were wiped from the map in the collateral devastation.
Of course, Xaren and the others did not see any of this themselves. They only learned of it later, when Captain Vollm gathered the survivors in their company for a post-battle briefing after the demons had made camp over the ruined remains of Zlego and its surrounding territory.
As for the war itself, the outcome could not have been clearer.
The combined strength of the humans, elves, and angels had not been enough.
Despite all their defences, preparations, and the desperate determination they had fought with, they could not withstand the overwhelming might the demons had brought to bear.
The defensive lines had collapsed, the resistance had been crushed, and the southern half of the continent was now ripe for the taking by the demons.
The full-scale incursion was only a matter of time.
