Chapter 90: Wind and Light

Two streaks of light tore through the air, arcing and colliding in rapid succession, each impact sending out brief shockwaves.

For a split second, as they broke apart, the swirling dust and energy peeled back just enough to reveal the figures of the two aura-clad fighters.

In the next second, they had already charged at each other once again, their swords meeting in another fierce, explosive clash.

Dark green and white aura exploded upon collision, the shockwaves reaching Xaren who silently protected his body with his own aura as he watched the fight.

Ilya’s sword flashed forward in a horizontal arc aimed at the knight’s midsection, but he angled his sword diagonally at his side, blocking her strike before shoving back with brute force.

He immediately followed up with a downward arcing slash, but Ilya stepped to the left, narrowly evading the blow, then stomped down on his blade, pinning it against the ground.

She swung her sword with her right hand, aiming it straight at the knight’s neck, but he quickly released his grip with his left hand, coating it in aura to parry her strike, then sent a surge of magic down his blade, forcing Ilya to release the weapon and back away.

His magic did not go to waste, as he immediately infused it into the ground, causing spears of light to erupt from the earth beneath her feet, driving her back to avoid being pierced.

As she leapt away from a cluster of spears, the knight launched himself forward, closing the distance in an instant and unleashing a barrage of light-infused slashes at her, each strike faster than the last.

Ilya spread her wings and flapped hard, shooting into the air to avoid the oncoming blades, all while loading her blade with aura.

She curved through the air, landing behind the knight and immediately charging at him. Even so, the man managed to turn just in time to catch her upward diagonal slash, sparks flying as their aura-clad blades clashed and ground against each other.

He tried to force her back with sheer strength, but she abruptly pulled her sword away and shifted left, causing him to stagger forward as the resistance against his blade vanished.

Without giving him a moment to recover his balance, Ilya pivoted on her left heel, whipping around with a horizontal slash that forced him to duck.

Keeping her momentum from the spin, she planted her right foot into the ground and swung her left leg upward, delivering a heavy kick into his side and sending him sliding across the cracked ground.

The knight quickly rolled to his feet and raised his sword defensively, but Ilya was already upon him, her blade raining down a furious barrage of strikes that forced him back, each of her blows battering against his defences.

Suddenly, Ilya’s Instinct sensed something off about the ground, and she immediately backed away, unfurling her wings and taking to the air just a second before spears of piercing light erupted from the ground in all directions, within a 25-meter radius of the knight.

Without hesitation, she condensed her aura around her left hand and unleashed an orb of compressed wind, sending it howling through the air, aimed straight at his chest.

The man jumped to the side to evade it, but before it hit the empty ground, the orb detonated into a storm of wind blades that flew outwards in all directions.

Still, the knight was fast enough to dash through the storm of blades, evading the deadly whirlwinds with nought but a few grazes.

Midway through his evasions, Ilya descended behind him, her sword swinging down in a vicious arc. But the man easily dodged the wind blade in front of him, then turned just in time to raise his sword overhead and block her slash.

He pushed against her blade, then immediately transitioned into a downward strike backed by the full force of his aura. Ilya, already anticipating his counter, used her wind to propel herself to the side, narrowly avoiding the light-infused slash.

Her sword shot up for a counter, aiming at his midsection, but like as usual, the knight didn’t flinch as he raised his sword to meet hers. Their auras collided with an impact that sent a shockwave rippling through the air.

The knight quickly kicked off the ground, launching himself backwards with a burst of light that Ilya quickly backed away from, putting distance between them. As he landed, he summoned a light circle beneath his feet and shot forward once more, his speed even greater this time.

A pillar of concentrated light surrounded his sword as he swung it downward, aiming for a decisive strike.

But before his strike could reach her, Ilya activated Darkstorm, and the rapidly revolving wind blades collided with his sword, forcing it back with considerable force.

’Tsk...’

The knight clicked his tongue, using magic to forcefully yank his body backwards, narrowly escaping the range of Ilya’s Darkstorm.

But that wasn’t the end of her counter. She took a step forward, expanding the range of her skill, pushing him back as he struggled to block the rapidly revolving wind blades.

Naturally, he failed, earning cuts all over his arms. If it weren’t for the thick aura coating, he might have lost both limbs from the sheer force of Ilya’s blades cutting through the air.

The man leapt back to create distance, and before Ilya could close it, he thrust his sword forward, unleashing a powerful beam of light from the tip of his blade.

Ilya angled her sword in front of her chest, just in time to block the beam with the flat side of her blade. Still, the force behind it knocked her back, nearly sending her crashing to the ground.

The man charged forward, swinging his blade in a wide horizontal arc aimed at her neck, and Ilya quickly ducked to avoid the swing, then launched another orb of compressed black wind at him.

He sidestepped with speed that made him nearly invisible to the naked eye, curving his sword through the air and unleashing a downward diagonal slash aimed at Ilya on the ground.

Ilya immediately hopped to the side to avoid the blow, then sprang to her feet and took a proper step back. As she moved backwards, she pulled her hands like she was drawing an invisible bow and fired three wind arrows at the man.

The knight parried the first arrow with ease, but the second and third strikes struck with an extra weight that caught him off guard.

’She used her aura...!’

He quickly noticed the difference between the first, second, and third wind arrows, but his discovery did nothing to stop the force behind them, which forced his sword back.

Before he could react, Ilya closed the gap and delivered a diagonal slash across his chest. Her sword sliced through both his armour and the flesh beneath, but no blood spilt outward as it was stopped by his armour.

The knight gritted his teeth and moved with blinding speed to counter, but Ilya anticipated his attack and swung her sword to intercept his. She parried his strike and immediately followed up with a counter which the man blocked.

Though he blocked it, Ilya released a burst of wind from the tip of her blade, an attempt to blow him off balance with the force of the gust.

Using the knockback from the wind to his advantage, the man widened the gap between them and swung his sword through the air, sending slashes of light flying at Ilya.

Despite the barrage of light attacks, Ilya didn’t back away but closed the distance, narrowly dodging each slash until she was close enough to unleash a slash aimed at the man’s head.

The knight’s sword met hers, and a momentary shockwave rippled between them, but Ilya immediately infused more magic power into her arms, boosting her strength enough to overpower his guard and shove his blade aside.

Seizing the opening, she slashed toward his midsection, but the knight twisted his body just enough to deflect the blow with the flat of his sword.

Without allowing him a second to even catch his breath, Ilya flowed into her next attack, retracting her blade and swinging it upward, targeting his shoulder.

However, he reacted quickly, adjusting his grip to block the blow, their swords locking for an instant before they both shoved away from each other.

In an instant, they were back at it, charging toward each other, their swords flashing as they exchanged strikes.

Ilya thrust her blade at his ribs, but the knight bent his upper body, narrowly avoiding the strike, and immediately countered with a downward slash aimed at her head. She sidestepped, the blade grazing past her as she brought her sword down low, aiming for his legs with a sweeping slash.

The man jumped back to evade, his boots scraping against the uneven ground, but before he could fully land, Ilya charged forward, her blade aimed directly at his neck.
