Gonna Be a Demon King! -
Chapter 72: Magic Resistance
Chapter 72: Magic Resistance
"...my... pouch."
Ilya spat out a bit of blood along with a broken tooth as she spoke. Xaren quickly spotted what she was looking for and used his gravitational attraction to pull it toward her.
Like Xaren, she usually tied her pouch to the inner part of her uniform. So while the other demon had lost his when they were sent flying, hers had remained secure.
She had removed it just before being attacked by the angel beasts and had no time to retrieve a vitality potion before being forced to fight for her life.
Checking the contents of the pouch, Ilya grabbed a potion and downed the entire bottle, letting out a quiet groan as she felt the wound on her stomach close at an even faster rate. She then took another potion to replenish the magic power she had expended in battle.
Xaren also took a magic potion himself, passing one to the other demon so he could better assist in any upcoming fights.
Vitality and magic potions were not a concern for Xaren and Ilya, as they still had plenty left from the rewards they had earned in battle two months ago.
Once the wound on her side had healed enough, Ilya got to her feet with Xaren’s help. He then handed her the souls of the beasts she had slain.
"Absorb them. You’ll need the extra boosts."
Ilya nodded silently and did as he instructed, then checked her level before glancing at the other demon with the injured arm.
"We have to try and find the others. The more of us there are, the better our chances."
"...Are the others even still alive?"
She hesitated before speaking, her body instinctively trembling as she recalled the chilling sensation from that final moment.
Her Instinct skill had warned her of danger at the same time Xaren’s Danger Sense had, and now, looking at the devastated forest around them, she found it hard to believe she had survived whatever had attacked them.
’...maybe because I wasn’t the target in the first place...’
That was the truth. The three of them had only survived because they were not the target and had been the furthest from it.
"Whether they are or not, we have to find out."
Xaren’s voice was firm as he glanced around warily, wondering if any angels were nearby. It was strange that he had encountered angel beasts but no angels accompanying them.
Just then, a beam of light erupted in the distance, and all three of them snapped their heads in that direction.
Without hesitation, they rushed toward the source, but when they arrived, all they found were the corpses of three demons, surrounded by six angel beasts.
The beasts immediately spotted them and lunged with roars, triggering another battle.
With Xaren and Ilya acting as the vanguard while the other demon brought up the rear with magic, they quickly took down four.
The remaining two tried to flee, but Xaren and Ilya swiftly pursued and cut them down.
With the fight over, the three demons wasted no time devouring the angel beasts’ souls.
Xaren glanced at his status, seeing his energy stat go from ’C-’ to ’C’ along with a level increase. He then turned his gaze in the direction the angel beasts had tried to escape, his eyes narrowing.
’Whatever is in that direction is most likely a source of security for them. We should avoid there for now.’
He turned to the other two and voiced his thoughts, and they, seeing the logic in his words, agreed to move in the opposite direction.
But just as they turned, Danger Sense blared an alarm and Xaren immediately spun back with his sword arcing through the air.
**CLANGGG!!!
His blade met a streak of silver light, the force behind the clash sending sparks flying as the shockwave cracked the ground beneath them. Xaren gritted his teeth, pushing back against the pressure as his feet dug into the dirt.
Looking up, he locked eyes with his attacker.
It was a man. A huge man.
A Half-Giant standing at around 2 meters tall. He had a lean-muscular build under his leather armour, long hair tied in braids, and radiated a powerful light-infused aura.
Looking down at Xaren, he spoke.
"I was wondering who it was that killed my beasts. Turns out it was just a bunch of kids."
Just as he said that, his eyes widened, snapping his head to the right just in time to see Ilya. She had already leapt into the air, her sword slicing toward his neck in a horizontal arc.
He immediately jumped back to evade her slash, but the moment his feet touched the ground, Xaren unfurled his wings and flapped them hard, adding gravitational repulsion for a burst of speed. He dashed in, his sword engulfed in flames, swinging toward the half-giant’s side.
At the same time, a gust of wind rushed past, and Ilya appeared behind the half-giant, bringing her sword down diagonally, once again aiming for his neck.
Noticing how they both aimed for his vitals without hesitation, the half-giant scoffed.
"You’re quite vicious for kids."
As he spoke, he twisted his body to the side, swinging his sword down to meet Xaren’s incoming strike. Simultaneously, a layer of silver light engulfed his body, with even more condensing around his left arm, which he raised to block Ilya’s blade.
Just then, a shadow loomed over them, and he glanced up to see the third demon unleashing his magic.
"Rock BOMB!!"
The demon shouted, swinging his hands down as a giant rock plummeted at breakneck speed.
Xaren and Ilya quickly unfurled their wings and took flight to avoid getting caught in the attack.
To ensure their opponent stayed in place, Xaren infused his Gravitational Amplification with demonic energy, temporarily immobilizing him.
The rock descended with an explosive burst of magic power, shaking the ground beneath them.
As his feet landed on the ground, Xaren quickly conjured a magic circle and called out to Ilya.
"Ilya! Wind!"
’Flame Pillar.’
A column of black fire erupted from the ground, and Ilya immediately channelled her wind magic to swirl the flames, transforming them into a raging vortex that she hurled toward their target.
Above, the third demon conjured a dozen rock spears and sent them crashing down all at once. The impact triggered a series of explosions, magic surging violently and ravaging the surroundings.
As the dust settled, the airborne demon glared down at the battlefield, breathing heavily. Just as he prepared to cast another spell, a sword coated in light shot out from the smoke.
"?!"
He barely managed to twist his body in time, but the blade still grazed his side and pierced through his wing. Staggering in the air, he had no chance to react before their attacker burst out of the dust cloud, seizing him by the neck and slamming him into the ground.
Without hesitation, the man spun and followed up with a powerful dropkick.
**BAMM!!!
"Hmm?"
The large man raised an eyebrow in mild surprise when he realized he hadn’t hit his dropkick target. Looking up, he spotted the wounded demon’s body soaring through the air, straight toward Xaren’s side.
’Telekinesis? That could be troublesome.’
Meanwhile, Xaren and Ilya stood in silence, their eyes locked onto their opponent.
They weren’t focused on their injured comrade. No, their attention was on something far more concerning.
Despite the sheer devastation of their combined magic, the half-giant remained completely unscathed.
Not a single scratch marked his body.
Unaware of the reason behind their silence, the giant man called his longsword back to his hands, casually twirling it in the air and spoke.
"Since there was a size limit for the teleportation, I was the only one selected to accompany the Commander. My ability to control beasts made me the perfect choice to deal with the stragglers.
The Commander trusted me with this task, so I can’t let you undermine his faith in me."
Xaren and Ilya said nothing, their gazes fixed on him as they tried to understand exactly how he had survived their magic barrage without a single injury.
When he noticed they were just staring at him in silence, he raised an eyebrow, glanced at himself, and asked,
"Oh, are you wondering why your magic didn’t work?"
Then he chuckled.
"Don’t worry. It did. I just ’resisted’ it all."
His words made Xaren’s expression contort, and the man, catching the shift, grinned in amusement.
"You... you know my skill, don’t you? I can see the realization in your eyes."
"..."
Xaren didn’t respond, but that silence was all the confirmation the man needed.
Xaren did recognize the skill. The way the half-giant phrased his words allowed Xaren to form a conjecture, one that had just been confirmed by the half-giant’s reaction.
"...Magic Resistance."
"Ahaha! You really did know it!"
The man let out a hearty laugh, his amusement evident.
A stark contrast to Xaren’s evident displeasure.
"What does the skill do?"
Ilya whispered the question to Xaren. It wasn’t that she couldn’t figure out its effect from the name alone. She could. But she asked anyway, just in case there were details that weren’t obvious from just the name.
"...it resists a percentage of magic based on the level difference between the Skill wielder and their opponent. But if the skill wielder’s level is higher than the magic attacker’s..."
Xaren paused for a moment, then clicked his tongue before finishing.
"...It completely nullifies the magic."
