Chapter 61: "Don’t Disappoint Me"
The destruction of the bridges and their collapse sent hundreds of demons and monsters plummeting to the bottom of the ravine.
Jagged rocks from the falling structures struck those who attempted to spread their wings and take flight, wounding some and sending them spiralling downward.
As they fell, the humans and elves stationed at the ravine’s edge bombarded them with magic of every element they could control.
A few humans and elves were caught in the chaos as well, but compared to the overwhelming number of demons and monsters, their losses were barely noticeable. Besides, the commanders who had ordered the bridges destroyed had already accepted the inevitability of some sacrifices.
Multiple makeshift bridges were torn apart, sending wave after wave of demons and monsters tumbling into the depths.
And as they fell, one of the Grandmaster Realm angels—one of the leaders of the angelic army—grabbed the soldier beside him and spoke.
"Let’s use our combination magic on them."
The other angel nodded without hesitation. Both of them, at level 300, unleashed their powerful magic, directing their will toward the river at the bottom of the ravine.
At their command, the water erupted, surging with a violent force.
But that was only the beginning.
Almost immediately, the water superheated, transforming into a massive cloud of scorching steam.
The dense vapour spread rapidly, its temperature far surpassing the boiling point of water multiple times over.
Even the hardy demons and monsters, resilient as they were, found themselves in agony—especially those with open wounds, as the blistering steam seared their exposed flesh.
But this was only the first phase of the spell.
The hot steam now filled the ravine, stretching outwards in both directions and rising to an immense height—over 400 meters into the air.
With the entire area now blanketed in thick, burning vapour, the two angels moved on to the next stage of their magic, fully intending to annihilate everything trapped below.
However, just as the lead angel was about to complete the spell—
*BOOM!
That noise echoed in their ears. It was followed by a wet, sickening sound.
Blood splattered through the air as the first angel’s head snapped backwards, a clean hole punched straight through his skull. His eyes, still wide with focus, never even had the chance to register his own death before his body collapsed.
"?!"
The second angel flinched in shock—but his magic was still flowing into the massive three-ringed magic circle they had formed.
As such, whatever targeted his companion, came for him as well.
*BOOM!
Another strike. Another hole through the head.
The second angel collapsed before he even realized what had happened.
Silence followed.
The other level 300 angels were momentarily stunned. They knew the power of the spell their comrades had been preparing.
More importantly, they had been actively protecting them, surrounding them with barriers to shield them from any potential counterattacks.
And yet—whatever had killed them had pierced through those defences effortlessly.
They had no idea where the attack had even come from.
The Archmages of Zlego cursed under their breath, their gazes going to the demons on the other end of the ravine before one of them shouted.
"Fall back into the city!"
The remaining angels hesitated, glancing at the fallen bodies of their comrades. But before they could attempt a retrieval, the Archmages of Zlego grabbed them, forcefully pulling them away.
Whatever secret weapon the demons had just used to eliminate two Level 300 angels in an instant—it wasn’t something they wanted to risk facing first-hand.
◇ ◇ ◇
About 1,500 kilometres away from Zlego, atop a lone hill, a tall fire demon stood with one hand extended, fingers forming the shape of a gun. A faint wisp of smoke curled from his fingertips.
The demon beside him glanced over before speaking.
"Floch, what did you just do?"
Floch lowered his hand, casually blowing away the smoke before answering.
"Just testing out a little sniping trick."
The other demon narrowed his eyes, a look of suspicion crossing his face. He opened his mouth to respond, but Floch continued before he could get a word in.
"Anyway, Sir, the missing elves and angels have been found. They’re in Zlego."
Hearing this, the other demon—High-Ranked Demon Naephas—turned his gaze toward the horizon.
His vision stretched far beyond normal limits, piercing through the vast distance and obstacles as if his eyes were high-powered binoculars. His sight locked onto Zlego, where the battle was still unfolding.
A frown settled on his face as he took in the scene.
"So that’s how it is... They abandoned the other frontline cities, evacuated the civilians, and left behind a handful of soldiers.
Then they used high-level illusion magic to make it seem as if the cities were still defended. Even went as far as stationing a few high-ranking pawns just to sell the illusion.
Meanwhile, their main forces all converged on Zlego."
Naephas’ voice grew colder as he continued.
"And it turned out every single one of them had explosives planted on their bodies. They blew themselves up the moment our forces realised something was off."
Floch let out a low chuckle, his lips curling into a mirthless smile as he responded.
"I could understand the elves resorting to such a suicidal tactic. But the angels..." He scoffed.
"The same angels who preach about brotherhood? Who claim they never abandon their own? Those hypocrites actually went through with a plan that sacrificed thousands of their own soldiers just to drag us down with them."
The mere thought of it was laughable.
"We’ve incurred far too many losses today."
Naephas clicked his tongue, irritation flickering in his expression. But after a short sigh, his composure returned.
"No matter. We’ll return the favour."
Turning towards Floch, he began giving out orders.
"Send reinforcements to Zlego. Use the Spatial Gates if necessary.
Also, have a squad make contact with the Dark Elves. They’ve always had a grudge against the Light Elves, haven’t they? Send a group to propose a partnership. We’ll use their hatred to our advantage."
His words hinted at the long-standing conflict between the Light and Dark Elves in this world.
Just as he was about to turn away, Naephas stopped. After a brief moment, he turned back to Floch, his voice carrying a warning tone.
"Don’t do that again."
Floch chuckled, already knowing exactly what Naephas meant. The High-Ranked demon had been watching from the beginning, so he knew why Floch had sniped those two angels before they could complete their spell.
And he also knew that Floch never expected him not to notice.
With a small smile, Floch gave a lazy salute.
"Yes, Sir. Just wanted to look out for one of Lord Xynax’s prospective students, you know."
At this, Naephas turned his gaze toward Zlego once more.
"If he can’t even survive something like this, then he’s not fit to become one of ’Xynax’s Chosen’."
With that, he turned and left, leaving Floch standing alone atop the hill.
The fire demon turned his head towards the distant battlefield, a small smirk forming on his lips as he muttered under his breath.
"Now then, kid... don’t disappoint me."
