Chapter 447: Chapter 271: Your God, Only Lets You Eat Bread_2

Human desires are endless. When hungry, a person’s only need is to eat enough, but once satiated, they will think about how to eat well, live well, and dress well.

The Radiance followers who fled to Harbor City quickly discovered that although, thanks to the Lord of Radiance’s grace, they had more pancakes than they could eat every day, there was no longer any worry about food or hunger.

But what could be offered to them was only those firm pancakes. They were filling, but truly not delicious.

Initially, having only pancakes was bearable, after all, they were refugees. It’s not like they could be choosy, being able to be full was already good enough. But when given the opportunity to choose, spiritual willpower struggles to withstand bodily cravings.

A Dragon Descendant merchant with Dragon Scales on both cheeks appeared in the refugee camp. At first, no Radiance follower paid attention to him because he was hiring, and the compensation he offered was a silver coin with a dragon head image.

However, the merchant who appeared in the refugee camp the next day quickly exchanged those seemingly worthless metal coins for stiff jerky.

The allure of preserved meat was immensely stronger than metal currency with nowhere to spend it. The refugee camp quickly caused a stir, and the merchant successfully recruited many able-bodied laborers.

What awaited these laborers was endless hard labor: cutting trees, reclaiming land, digging ditches, excavating rocks... Each task was from dawn to dusk, exhausting one’s time and energy.

Of course, although such grueling labor did not treat them as humans, those Radiance followers who got jobs. Their quality of life visibly improved by a notch compared to their fellow citizens.

They no longer had to gnaw on those hard pancakes and could let themselves and their families drink rice porridge with bits of meat every day, wearing clean and decent clothes.

The clear and direct returns made these Radiance followers increasingly diligent. Under their hard work, the initially simple Harbor City began to gradually cover the refugee camp, and those unsightly ragged tents were also cleaned up one by one.

More and more merchants appeared in Harbor City, hiring these Radiance followers willing to work, since these people’s demands were shockingly low. As long as their stomachs were filled, they were willing to labor for a day.

Where else could one find such a good deal? In the Holy Dragon Territory, room and board are a must-have standard for recruiting employees, even if they don’t need it, equivalent compensation must be provided in their wages.

But now, in this Harbor City far from the Holy Dragon Land, they could act recklessly, offering just two full meals and some pickled meat sticks that even dogs in the Holy Dragon Territory wouldn’t touch to recruit numerous diligent young laborers.

The key is that there was no relevant law enforcement department to regulate and punish them, and the Fairy Governor managing here was pleased with the situation, turning a blind eye.

This made the arriving merchants increasingly excited, their eyes fixing on the Radiance followers like they were green with envy. This was a walking human mining machine!

However, as the number of merchants increased, the seemingly abundant Radiance followers became somewhat insufficient, even though shiploads of them continued to arrive.

Because the Holy Dragon Territory hadn’t stopped supplying food here, free pancakes were still distributed daily. This caused a portion of devout believers, whose material needs weren’t abundant, to remain immersed in pious prayers to the Lord of Radiance, not pursuing worldly possessions.

Their ultimate goal was, after death, to ascend to the Radiant Divine Kingdom, share in the Lord of Radiance’s glory, and be Immortal with the Divine.

Sure, that’s what they said, but the body’s instinctive craving for meat was hard to suppress. That was an inherent biological need.

So, on what was an ordinarily routine morning, angry curses and confident retorts sounded on the dirt road beside the newly dug ditch,

"This is a gift from the Lord to me! What right do you have to take it from me?"

A middle-aged man pinned to the ground by a burly fellow struggled fiercely, yelling sharply, attracting many people about to go out for work.

"Screw you, I felt sorry for you a few days ago and gave you two fish cakes. Did you think this was a charity house? Stealing every day, and today even daring to rob, do you think I’m made of mud?"

Seeing more and more people gathering around, the fish cake vendor couldn’t help but curse loudly, angrily giving the old fellow two punches in the face with an expression of bad luck.

He came a long way to Harbor City because he heard that there were business opportunities everywhere and fooling around could easily lead to wealth. His former neighbors had set up shady factories here, earning a fortune.

Envious, he followed over and then set up his own fish cake stall. The first day he set up the stall, he encountered this old fellow, staring expectantly at the front of his stall.

Seeing the old man yellow-faced and thin, feeling pitiful, he tossed him two fish cakes. In response, instead of gratitude, the old fellow thanked that damned Lord of Radiance.

However, knowing the Lord of Radiance was a True God, he only cursed quietly and didn’t argue much, thinking it was like tossing fish cakes to a dog.

But unexpectedly, the next day, this old fellow stood at his stall again. He didn’t bother to deal with him, but the old fellow stole seven fish cakes when he wasn’t looking.

It continued like this for the following days, which infuriated him so much he even apologized to the dogs, thinking that if the fish cakes were given to dogs, they’d wag their tails the second time they saw him, but with this guy, not only was there no gratitude, he even bit back.

Today he intentionally waited for the old fellow to catch him red-handed. No way could he let this slide. The value of the stolen fish cakes wasn’t much, but it was incredibly disgusting.

"What stealing? What robbing? This is a revelation from the Lord!"

Captured on the spot, the believer immediately stiffened his neck, emotionally refuting,

"I want to eat meat, so the Lord blessed me with fish cakes, which are rightfully mine."

"If you want to eat meat, go work in a factory, who’s stopping you? Why do you always steal from me?"

The fish cake vendor was indignant,

"Does your Lord promote theft?"

"How dare you slander the great Lord of Radiance!"

At this point, not only the old thief pinned by the fish cake vendor but the bystanders’ expressions began to change.

"What are you doing? Why the noise so early in the morning?"

A Magic Statue with sword and shield engravings descended from the sky, resembling a Steel Giant, entering with great deterrent power, instantly quelling the slightly off atmosphere.

"Patrol Officer, I caught a thief!"

The fish cake vendor, realizing he had misspoken, straightened up as the Magic Statue entered, reporting loudly.

"I’m not a thief, I’m a devout believer of the Lord of Radiance, I just don’t want to eat pancakes, I want to eat meat..."

"But your Divine only paid for the pancakes!"

From the Steel Magic Statue, a crisp and pleasant voice sounded. It was the Fairy controlling the statue,

"If you want to eat meat, then work, only laborers have enough!"

"That’s not fair, I pray to my Lord every day, why am I inferior to those who ignore my faith?"

"So you admit to your theft?"

"That’s not theft, it’s a reward for my devout faith from the Lord!"

"But I haven’t received the money from the Lord of Radiance."

Seeing the old thief stubbornly denying, the fish cake vendor retorted.

"According to the Law Code, those with theft behavior, but whose stolen property amounts to less than one gold, are subjected to fifteen lashes!"
