Chapter 39: The Camping Problem

It was finally nighttime at the Portal room of the academy, which was more heavily guarded since the academy was mostly heavy, to avoid intruders.

It was silent as the guards stood rock still and looked around with their eyes readied for the slightest movements of attacks that could from anywhere.

As they continued to stare around, a loud crackling could be heard, getting all their attention as they all began to rush to find where the sound had gone from.

Could it be that someone had gotten past them, no. That could not be the situation unless something had happened in the portal expedition and someone was using the portal stone to return.

As they continued to the sound, a large pink portal opened up in the air and dropped a person crashing onto the ground with a thud.

Luckily several security guards caught sight of this and began to head forward to the person.

Reaching the person, they inspected the person as she was leaking blood uncontrollably from every part of her body, looking almost dead, whereas she was alive.

They looked further into her and one of them noticed who this person was. "Isn’t this Mrs Dorothy?!"

The group gasped in shock, one of them ordering the other to get help, while he tried his best to use his ability to curb the bleeding.

A whole academy teacher had gotten herself this badly injured; what about the students? This did not make any sense.

It was just a red portal, after all; this injury was too much for a...

"Sir! Come look at this!"

The chief security guard who was at Dorothy’s body quickly turned around and started to race to the urgent soldier, and when he got to him, he immediately knew why he had been called without being told.

One of the Red portals that had been used by the second years was slowly turning dark.

"Oh my God!" He muttered in shock. Gale Martin, who was the chief of security, shook his head, knowing what this meant.

All the second-year students that Dorothy accompanied might as well be assumed dead.

’This isn’t good... Who in the world would do this?’ he asked himself before turning to the next red portal.

Whoever had done this must have done this exactly a day from now, as his ability effect only lasted probably a day.

But knowing one of the portals was a trap, and the other was truly a red portal, Martin knew there would be more surprises for the others in the red portal.

’Could it be there is also a trap over there too?’

Meanwhile in the red portal.

The students were all in their camp tent but not asleep as they knew the dangers of sleeping in a red portal; they might as well be attacked by beasts which were active at night.

This was a reason for their caution, and the second reason was the fact that they were provided glasses that were able to see just a few meters into the night with a green colour which wasn’t view clear.

Without a clear view, only those who had abilities that tied to seeing in the night had the advantage.

Alistair, on the other hand, stood there worried. She hadn’t seen Leonard, and he had promised to be back before night, and here they were, on the first supposed day of the outing, and he wasn’t back.

She began to worry if anything had happened to him. After all, Leonard was a Grade stronger than her, and in combat experience, he was basically stronger.

If something was to take him down, she was nonetheless dead herself.

She was even surprised the camp had encountered no Beast up to now, but her surprise also found dread as she knew what that meant. If there were no monsters that meant a higher grade beast was around.

And that was another reason she stood guard.

’I am not a combat type; as things are going, I might actually have to fight and to gauge my attack powers. I can only take down intermediate beasts.’

As though luck had not been on her side, there was a very high-pitched scream in the number of the tents, and followed were a few others which agitated her, and at the last moment, she heard a word that made her throat go dry.

"A beast! A Be—Ahhhhhhh!"

Alistair immediately sprang into action, racing towards the sound of the cries of students; while she did this, she had her hopes high for it to be an intermediate beast or lower. If it was, she would not have much problem taking it down.

She grasped her spear strapped to her back tightly, ready to fight with it as she ran past a few tents. The students were quickly pouring out, and others ran past her, some heading towards the woods and others stopping after seeing her head to treat the situation.

But as Alistair took one more turn and saw the torn tents on flames and burning into ashes which soared into the air in dying embers she felt her heart tremble at the sight of the beast.

It was a humanoid-shaped beast standing primordial with the headless corpse of a student and much more beneath its feet.

"A humanoid!" Alistair found her heart trembling in her words as she recalled what a humanoid beast meant, these were beasts above the normal grades they gave students; this was a Demon-grade beast and the second she had ever encountered in her life.

Her mouth dropped open and a scream forced out of it. "RUUUUUUNNN!!!" She screamed out to the students, and they instantly understood the situation.

Some began to run away without looking back knowing taking their chances with whatever was in the forest was far better than taking their chances with the beast.

And other students still held belief in Alistair defying her orders and standing on the watch.

The students weren’t the only ones to hear the scream as the beast also turned to Alistair, showing its face, which had no eyes or nose but just a large mouth filled with sharp rolls of teeth stained with blood and chunks of flesh of students.

It snarled and began to approach Alistair at a steady pace.

Alistair pulled out her spear and readied herself to do battle with the beast. She wasn’t planning on paying attention to the students anymore as her life was on the line here.

She took a fighting stance and slowly studied the beasts’ movement and...

In a mere second, the beast’s face was directly before hers, sending a shock through her body, which kept her paralyzed in place.

It was fast, and now, before her, it looked far more monstrous than before.

"Gah!" She screamed out, swinging the spear out to the beast’s throat; it jerked its head back at an equal speed, letting the spear pass by it, and then the beast attacked next.

It was fast and brutal in its attack, lunging forward at Mrs Alistair and catching her by the waist with its claws digging into her.

This sent blood pouring out of her, which hurt like hell, but the beast wasn’t done yet; it pried open its mouth, revealing its sharp rolls of teeth and with a sickening force, it but down into the side of her neck and ripped out the flesh and bone with a jerk.

The students who were watching in hopes of Alistair winning, seeing how the beast had taken her out in merely a second, began to take faltering steps back until those steps finally evolved into running.

The Beast dropped Alistair’s body to the ground, leaving it to leak out blood, and then it went forward to prey on other students.

The academy’s camp had been ruined, and all the students had been scattered.
