Chapter 84: Quiet night

"Do you know how to fish?" Laura asked as she pulled two fishing poles from her inventory.

"I’ve only done it twice, but I guess so."

"Haha, good. Then let’s go fishing. It’s nice to eat the delicious things in the city always, but you don’t really enjoy the adventure if when you go out, you don’t eat of what the world gives you." She said, rather cheerfully.

Somehow, it made sense. So he nodded and grabbed the other fishing pole.

Then they rigged up some baits, set them, and cast them into the river.

Fish were still looking for food, so it would surely be a good fish hunt.

"Do you like adventures?" she asked suddenly.

"Quite a bit, yes. I’m not used to having them, though."

"Haha, I suppose that makes sense. Being a Habsburg, you must have a lot of enemies out there, overseas."

He gave her a sidelong glance and sighed.

"To tell you the truth, I don’t know too much about my family’s history. When it happened that night, I was in arms and had to be smuggled out of the empire. I grew up and lived my whole life wondering about my parents, as I was raised by an old woman of days, who claimed to be a maid in my family. But she never wanted to tell me the back story."

"Oh." She looked at him. "How did you learn the story?"

"An old family servant who is still living searched for me until he found me with the help of my brothers. They told me part of it, but not too much."

She nodded and returned her gaze to the river. She had caught a fish and had to bring it in quickly. Its size was decent. About 13 inches long, and it was pretty fat, so she smiled and poked it with a stick into the ground.

Then she returned to her position.

It didn’t take Louis long to do something similar, for he had grabbed too.

Peace and quiet struck them, as the chill of the night made itself felt from behind every hill. The trees swayed slowly, but purposefully, and beat the wind at will.

The deer that had been drinking water there went home, and the little birds were no longer heard. Soon, darkness would hit them. But there were still curious fish in the river, illuminated by the red rays of the sun hiding between the mountains.

"The Habsburgs are a legendary family. It is said that when they lived, they were on a par with the Lockwards in the empire and revered them. They...had the peculiarity that they did not believe in any gods except those they could see. That’s why they were at enmity with the Asoist Church." She said suddenly, beginning to tell a story she was passionate about.

But there was something that caught Louis’ attention.

"Did they worship the Lockward’s? Why?"

"Because of their Gods. They believed in the God of Thunder as the Primordial God."

"Huh?" Louis blinked quizzically.

What did they believe in his father? Did people really worship him?

And they were so powerful!

What the hell was going through their heads?

Seeing this reaction in him made Laura giggle a little.

"Hahaha, you don’t even know your family’s beliefs? God... hahaha."

Still, it made sense. The remaining Habsburgs had to surrender to the Asoists to live.

So, even though it caused her to laugh so hard that she staggered in place, she ended up understanding.

He wasn’t really surprised by that. He didn’t care about their beliefs; the point was that they believed in his father.

His father!

Although he was a bastard who had kicked him out of the Clan, the reality was that he was still her father.

But she had no way of knowing this.

"It’s not so strange that there are people who believe in Human Gods. After all, they have supreme power, and you can see it, so why not believe in them? And the Human Gods benefit from this to rule over them, so there are some churches to the God of Thunder. It’s a trade-off."

’Unbelievable. Churches.’ Even though he couldn’t believe it, if Laura said it, he had to.

She kept talking.

"Not believing in the gods of the asoists, maybe that’s what sentenced them, though for now there are things that aren’t known, rumors say it was the asoists who killed them."

He nodded. He believed it too.

From what little he knew about that story, all the clues pointed to the fact that the Church itself had it done. But for that, they needed a lot of power.

’The Theocracy must be a powerful nation.’ He thought.

Tick-

Tick-

Suddenly, a sound brought them out of their world of memories, and they realized that the reed was pulling hard—both at the same time.

They both quickly got up and pulled hard. Then, a splash of water from the inside out splashed them, as two giant fish over 1 meter long and 50 centimeters wide came out.

The joy intensified on their faces, so they immediately killed them.

"For now, I think that will be more than enough." She said with a smile.

Night had already fallen, so fishing was no longer necessary.

At some point during the talk, the moonlight began to illuminate them, so they decided to start preparing the food.

First, they opened the fish and took out the inedible things.

Then they began to prepare them with seasonings and so on, to later grill them over a fire rune, with dry chopsticks.

The whole process was done while they chatted about different topics. She told him a little more about the Habsburgs and also about herself.

She was born into a family that also worshipped human Gods, so she was inclined to worship the God of Thunder and the Mother Goddess of the Birds (Louis’ mother).

She was also curious about this Industrial God of Steam, who was worshipped by a small population in different cities.

The food was quick, and soon they began eating, while listening to the sound of night crickets and bugs. Occasionally, the roar of wild animals or more powerful beasts could be heard in the distant mountains.

This environment was, quite simply, perfect for enjoyment.

They both saw it that way.
