Chapter 395: 396 Chapter The Origin is Not Small_1
"I’m really sorry, Mr. Li," admitted the contestant number twelve, growing increasingly impressed by Li Changlin. After wrestling with himself for a while, he finally managed to say, "The couplet I’m presenting now is actually my grandfather’s work, and for several of them, he himself couldn’t think of the second line, so I ask for your guidance graciously, Mr. Li."
"So that was it!"
Many had thought that contestant number twelve was about to concede when he suddenly began to compliment Li Changlin out of the blue.
However, it turned out that contestant number twelve had something else up his sleeve, which posed a certain challenge to Li Changlin.
"Damn, isn’t this like two against one?"
"This number twelve contestant seems to have quite a background; his grandfather is definitely not a pushover."
"It’s clear now, Brother Changlin is in trouble. After all, the grandfather of contestant number twelve must be a professional."
"Pshaw, what’s there to worry about? Brother Changlin is sure to claim the final victory."
In the live-streaming room, some were conflicted, others dejected.
Seeing that his brethren seemed to have lost faith in Li Changlin, Zhou Ziyu became anxious and immediately raised her voice in protest.
"No worries, go ahead and propose your couplet," Li Changlin said, unaware of the sentiment among his live-streaming brothers, but he felt no pressure when it came to answering couplets.
Whatever ace contestant number twelve had, Li Changlin was ready to take it on.
"Alright, Mr. Li, please listen to my first line: With childlike innocence intact, at this moment I steal leisure to catch moon’s reflection."
As soon as this line was recited, the five judges frowned, simultaneously lifting their glances towards Li Changlin.
Even the two judges appeared slightly stunned.
All of them were either professional or semi-professional, so they immediately discerned the depth of the first line.
This couplet showed the open-minded attitude of an elderly person. Frankly speaking, it was going to be somewhat difficult for Li Changlin to come up with a response.
Of course, it wasn’t that the crowd underestimated Li Changlin.
The judges, including the two hosts, had actually developed a sense of admiration for Li Changlin’s talent.
However, this particular first line was genuinely difficult to match.
Honestly, responding to couplets really requires talent, as well as natural ability, but an incredibly important aspect is also one’s life experience and wisdom.
Li Changlin was merely twenty-three or twenty-four years old; it seemed impossible for him to understand the psyche of an octogenarian.
Why would an old man maintain such childlike innocence and even engage in childish acts like stealthily trying to catch the moon’s reflection in the water!
However, it wasn’t long before Li Changlin showed everyone what real strength was.
He didn’t even hesitate for a moment.
After contestant number twelve finished speaking, Li Changlin had already picked up the microphone and began to say, "My lower couplet goes like this: Hard to dispel the air of age, suddenly dozing off, dreaming of past romances."
You wanted to pretend to have the heart of a child, right? So the Nearly Divine Tycoon is ironically suggesting you’re dozing off, dreaming of romances.
This response was naturally well-crafted.
However, contestant number twelve apparently couldn’t determine whether Li Changlin’s response was viable.
Therefore, having no other choice, he had to look up toward the judges’ position.
"Contestant number twelve, the competition has been going on for quite some time, but I have yet to ask for your name. Could it be that your surname is Gu?" Elder Gu didn’t go straight into the critique but, rather, brought up a question that seemingly had nothing to do with his evaluation.
"Grandpa Gu, you truly are incredible, guessing the origin of this young man solely from his upper couplet." There was no point in hiding, so contestant number twelve stood up and respectfully bowed to Elder Gu, then called out to him again as Grandpa Gu.
"Haha, meeting an old friend after so many years, I too feel much gratified!" Elder Gu stroked his jawline beard, appearing quite pleased, "By the way, Young Gu, how is your grandfather doing these days?"
The other four judges beside him were completely baffled.
Come on, Elder Gu, could you not be so cryptic?
Who is this young man exactly, that he even calls you Grandpa Gu?
"Thanks to Grandpa Gu’s blessings, my grandfather has been quite frail lately, and he often talks about wanting to come back to see his old friends. But ever since my grandmother passed, his health hasn’t been what it once was. So the family is reluctant to let him travel. The reason I’ve come to Huacheng this time is in fact on my grandfather’s behalf, to visit Grandpa Gu and his old friends from the past."
"So that’s how it is, good, very good!" Elder Gu nodded his head and then suddenly thought of something, "Young Gu, I think it would be best if you could somehow bring your grandfather to Huacheng."
"Grandpa Gu, if you have anything to tell me, I can let my grandfather know." Remembering his grandfather’s health issues, contestant number twelve did not dare to assume too much and hurriedly said, "It’s mainly because the journey is too long, and it’s really inconvenient for my grandfather to come."
"What inconvenience? It’s just a matter of a few hours on a plane." Elder Gu was noncommittal but knew convincing Young Gu might be tricky. So, with a quick mental shift, he suddenly thought of a question, "I say, Young Gu, the upper couplet you just mentioned, that must have been composed by your grandfather after your grandmother passed away, right?"
"Yes, Grandpa Gu, you’re truly worthy of being my grandfather’s confidant, even guessing that!" Contestant number twelve was genuinely astonished; no wonder his grandfather always said Elder Gu was his soulmate and had even remarked that when he had the chance, he definitely wanted to let Grandpa Gu respond to this upper couplet!
"It’s not that I guessed it." Elder Gu smirked and raised his eyes to Li Changlin, "Actually, it was Mr. Li who told me!"
"Ah, Elder Gu, you really embarrass me." Hearing Elder Gu referring to himself as ’Mr.’, Li Changlin too quickly stood up and offered a formal gesture of respect.
Truly unworthy of such honor, to think Elder Gu, already in his seventies, would still jest with the younger generation.
"Mr. Li?" Contestant number twelve was slightly stunned, and the expression of surprise on his face grew even thicker.
Seeing his reaction, the judges couldn’t help but suppress a laugh, and in the end Elder Yongkang Bo couldn’t hold back and had to give him a hint, saying, "Young man, think carefully about the lower couplet Mr. Li just mentioned."
"The lower couplet?" Contestant number twelve concentrated and thought hard; the line ’Hard to dispel the air of age, suddenly dozing off, dreaming of past romances,’ didn’t seem to hold much depth.
Depth?
As soon as he considered the deeper meaning, contestant number twelve suddenly realized.
He remembered that his grandfather’s upper couplet was: A child’s heart remains unspoiled, taking a moment to secretly catch moon shadows. It seemed to speak of a peaceful mindset, retaining a refined taste, but why would Li Changlin respond with ’Hard to dispel the air of age, suddenly dozing off, dreaming of past romances?’
