Chapter 467: Chapter 501, Should I Try Firing a Shot?

What is an assassin?

To ordinary people, assassins are a group one cannot normally see; even if one is determined to search for them, they are hard to find. They hide among the ordinary populace, appearing without a shadow and disappearing without a trace. Others simply cannot discern their identity.

It is precisely because they are adept at concealing themselves that their mindsets remain calm and composed at all times. Unlike those who shout and brawl, those are not assassins, those are thugs.

An assassin is someone who, regardless of the time or environment, always maintains their composure. It’s not about killing invisibly, but to ensure that after the kill, they keep their skills and fame deeply hidden. That is an assassin.

Inferior assassins cannot achieve this step, for the gap between inferior and superior assassins lies in a single word: ruthlessness.

Take, for example, this man, who by the riverbank, just killed an entire family.

This family included two elderly individuals, a middle-aged couple, and a seven-year-old child. When this man acted, he disregarded their screams; in their terrified eyes, he showed not the slightest hesitation. With one sweep of his blade, they all died.

Perhaps they had done wrong, perhaps their conduct had been poor, but it was not deserving of death.

Yet, they had died.

Witnessing this scene, Li Xuan finally couldn’t bear it and ran to the side, knelt on the ground, and vomited violently. He simply couldn’t stand such a bloody and horrifying scene. It was truly dreadful.

"Heh, young man, not even able to stomach a bit of gore, how will you ever handle big matters in the future?" Lin Zheng shook his head as he stood with his hands clasped behind his back.

Then Lin Zheng turned, looking at the tall man, and said, "Luo Hui, take all these bodies to Fang Yi’s place. Remember, don’t leave behind any trace of your presence, you understand how it should be done, right?"

Luo Hui bowed his head, saying with difficulty, "Understood."

Lin Zheng said, "Good, you are already a ghost soldier of the Lin Family. I hope you remain loyal; it is your bounden duty to handle this matter correctly. I wish for no mistakes."

Luo Hui still kept his head down, "Yes!"

Lin Zheng said, "Go."

Luo Hui, with his head down, began to deal with the family’s corpses. When he truly saw the tragic state of the family, his heart clenched. Even though he had experienced combat and seen blood before, he could swear that what he had seen previously combined did not amount to as much blood as here.

Terrifying, dreadful!

Just then, a thick scent of blood wafted over, causing Luo Hui’s body to tense instantly. He felt a bone-chilling cold assault his entire body, and a sinister voice arose by his ear.

"You used to be a special forces soldier, right? Does doing this kind of work trouble your conscience?" The voice was eerie and hoarse, speaking in Xuan Cang language, but not very fluently.

Luo Hui turned his head and saw a face so malevolent and horrifying, half-covered by a mask.

"Yes!" Luo Hui admitted.

"Ha ha, good!" the masked man said. "You Xuan Cang people sure love killing each other. Well, I’m looking forward to seeing a former soldier turn dark. Just thinking about it excites me."

With that, the masked man extended his tongue and licked his lips.

Luo Hui’s expression darkened, "What about you then, killing so many, does your conscience allow it?"

"Me? As long as there’s money to be made, that’s all that matters. Conscience? It can’t fill your belly, nor can it get you women." As he spoke, the masked man suddenly took on a sinister glee. "What’s more, I’m Japanese. The life or death of you Xuan Cang people, why should I care?"

Luo Hui’s heart sank; he no longer paid any mind to the masked man and began moving the bloody corpses into a vehicle.

At the same time, Li Xuan had had enough of vomiting, so he wiped his mouth with a tissue and hastened to Lin Zheng’s side, saying, "Third Master Lin, is... is this what you call a stratagem?"

Lin Zheng said, "What, are you dissatisfied?"

Li Xuan said, "They are all ordinary people, there are even children inside, and you... you actually let the assassin kill them just like that. Even if you want to frame Fang Yi, isn’t this strategy too extreme?"

Lin Zheng turned his head and looked at Li Xuan, who was intimidated by his gaze and involuntarily stepped back twice. Lin Zheng’s tone was slightly cold, "Great accomplishments require overlooking trivial details. Which monarch in history hasn’t climbed to power without killing a few people? To deal with an enemy, one must be ruthless. If you don’t understand this and want to give up taking on Fang Yi, feel free to leave."

A bitter taste filled Li Xuan’s heart. He had already waded into murky waters, and to think of withdrawing now, how could it be simple? The Lin Family was an entity he could not afford to confront.

At this point, Li Xuan understood a principle— he was bargaining with a tiger over its skin, and he did not know whether he would be able to emerge unscathed in the end.

...

"Hello, I am Lin Jingtian." The man extended his hand to Fang Yi.

Fang Yi said nothing, turned around, entered the office, and sat down. Lin Jingtian did not pay further attention to Huo Xiaoxuan and walked straight into the office, sitting down opposite Fang Yi.

It was not until then that Fang Yi raised an eyebrow at Lin Jingtian.

"What brings you here?" Fang Yi lit a cigarette.

"I wouldn’t dare give any advice," Lin Jingtian said.

"Since there’s no advice, there’s the door. Please get out," Fang Yi said coolly.

Lin Jingtian was not angry; instead, he smiled and said, "Fang Yi, you don’t need to rush me out. My surname is Lin, and you must have guessed where I’m from. I’m not here to avenge Lin Chen but to seek a partnership with you."

Fang Yi said, "What qualifies you to partner with me?"

"A secret."

"Oh?"

"Besides me coming to Moon City, there’s also my older sister Lin Xueru and my uncle Lin Zheng. You might not know him, but he’s astute and ruthless, and never leaves a job unfinished. Everyone he sets his sight on never lives."

"But I don’t understand, why come to me for a partnership?"

"Simple, because you are an enemy of Lin Chen," said Lin Jingtian.

"Let me guess... you couldn’t possibly be interested in the position of head of the Lin Family, could you?" said Fang Yi.

Lin Jingtian shook his head and spoke flatly, "I am well aware of my own limitations. Fang Yi, I think you’ll find this conversation interesting." He took out a recording pen, turned it on, and placed it on the office desk.

Two voices played, one was Lin Chen’s voice, and the other was a middle-aged man’s voice— presumably Lin Jingtian’s uncle. When Fang Yi heard the strategy being discussed, he suddenly stood up.

Fang Yi said nothing, walked around the office desk, and came up to Lin Jingtian.

Lin Jingtian’s hand was already reaching into the inner pocket of his coat, and he promptly took out a handgun. In the moment he drew it, Fang Yi grasped his wrist, and then Lin Jingtian let out a pained cry as the handgun fell from his hand.

In an instant, the handgun mysteriously ended up in Fang Yi’s hands, and by the time Lin Jingtian realized, the muzzle was already aimed at him.

"This... this is just a toy gun, you shouldn’t... take it seriously!" Sweat appeared on Lin Jingtian’s forehead.

"Is that so? Shall I fire a shot to test it?" Fang Yi taunted.
