Chapter 354: Chapter 378, Cannon 5 to 4
Slap!
The sound of a slap echoed resoundingly.
Zhou Yu, covering his face, was too grieved to speak as he gazed at Lin Jingtian, who was seething with icy rage. He didn’t know what to say.
Lin Jingtian was the man who had followed Elder Liu, and at that moment, his expression was extremely cold, his eyes like knives, fixed on Zhou Yu, who dared not move a muscle.
Biting his teeth, Zhou Yu couldn’t help but whisper, "Team leader."
However, what he received in return was Lin Jingtian’s chilling gaze.
The atmosphere was deadly silent, eerily still, until after a long while, Lin Jingtian lighted a cigarette and exhaled a puff of smoke, saying indifferently, "Zhou Yu, it’s your mistake, you need to rectify it yourself; I can’t help you."
Zhou Yu trembled, his complexion instantly turning tremendously pale as he said, "Team leader, is... is that Fang Yi really so terrifying? He is just a lower-ranking Jiaolong Guard."
Lin Jingtian scoffed, "I used to think like you, and back then, he wasn’t even a Jiaolong Guard. But during that selection, he eliminated over forty of the instructor-led men, including an instructor from the Blood Dragon Guard whom he thoroughly defeated. So, looking at that... is he still just a low-level Jiaolong Guard?"
Zhou Yu was at a loss for words—his heart pounded as though it had been heavily struck by a hammer. He had been indifferent before, but now, with Lin Jingtian putting it that way, Zhou Yu finally felt fear creeping within him.
Seeing Zhou Yu in this state, Lin Jingtian’s tone changed abruptly, "However... that also makes it interesting."
Zhou Yu, unable to grasp the meaning behind Lin Jingtian’s words, tentatively asked, "Team leader, do you mean..."
Lin Jingtian said, "Though it’s true, I am actually quite curious to see what storm Fang Yi will stir up after causing such a commotion."
Excitement flickered in Lin Jingtian’s eyes—ignited by the prospect of facing a true challenger after so long without one.
At the entrance of the old courtyard, Elder Liu sat in a wheelchair, pushed by a nurse, coming out to greet them personally. This scene left Fang Yuying, who was standing by, somewhat surprised.
Although Fang Yuying was not affiliated with the Dragon Team, she was vaguely aware that Elder Liu in the Dragon Team was respected and even considered a senior. She found it baffling that her younger brother could prompt a personal reception from Elder Liu with just one phone call.
Even Fang Yuying had to admit that Fang Yi was only a low-ranking Jiaolong Guard within the Dragon Team.
Fang Yuying glanced at Fang Yi from the corner of her eye, her curiosity about her younger brother growing.
"Fang Yi, my boy, you finally made it. Do you know how bitterly I’ve been waiting for you?" Elder Liu said warmly, smiling as he gestured for the two Blood Dragon Guards at the gate to make way.
Fang Yi strode in, approached Elder Liu with a slight smile, and said, "Elder Liu seems to be in a good mood?"
Elder Liu chuckled, "I am in a good mood, so, my boy, you better not disappoint me."
Fang Yi, catching the underlying suggestion, smiled back without saying much. At that moment, Fang Yuying stepped forward with a respectful greeting, "I pay my respects to Elder Liu."
"You are..."
"Fang Yuying."
"Sounds familiar. Aren’t you the Fang Family’s Rouge Tiger?" Elder Liu said with slight surprise.
Fang Yi was momentarily stunned by the mention of "rouge tiger"—that must be the name Fang Yuying went by outside. The nickname did suit her personality quite well.
As they chatted, Fang Yi and Fang Yuying followed Elder Liu deeper into the courtyard, where Elder Liu sat in a wheelchair pushed by a nanny. This struck Fang Yi as odd—logically, it should have been Lin Jingtian pushing the wheelchair.
Eventually, in the deep part of the garden, Fang Yi and Fang Yuying met Wu Boqing, leading to another round of introductions. Wu Boqing was slightly surprised to learn Fang Yuying’s identity, but he was even more intrigued by Fang Yi.
This was surprising because Fang Yi, a mere member of the Jiaolong Guards, was personally greeted by Elder Liu. Such a treatment was usually reserved for the Dragon King. Apart from him, Wu Boqing couldn’t think of anyone else deserving such a reception—in his case, only a nanny had come to welcome him.
Knowing Wu Boqing’s status, Fang Yi respected him deeply. This elderly man, like Elder Liu, was another senior member of the Dragon Team. It was crucial to forge a connection, or at least not to offend him. If any offense occurred, well, that could be dealt with directly.
Elder Liu and Wu Boqing sat across from each other at a chessboard. Fang Yi glanced at the game but said nothing, while the nanny brought chairs for him and Fang Yuying to sit by the side.
Many pieces had been removed from the chessboard, indicating a game in its most intense phase. Fang Yi had some knowledge of chess; he used to play with an old man during his free time.
At first, the old man used to trounce him mercilessly, but Fang Yi’s stubborn nature didn’t allow him to accept defeat. He spent a long time studying chess manuals and gradually, he was able to last longer against the old man without being brutally beaten.
However, Fang Yi had never won against the old man, not even once.
Back then, Fang Yi had admitted to himself that he lacked talent in chess, so he stopped playing.
But now, seeing the chess game and Elder Liu’s troubled expression, he couldn’t help but whisper, "Cannon five to four."
It was just four words, but both elders were taken aback; soon after, Elder Liu’s face lit up with delight, while Wu Boqing looked up at Fang Yi, his gaze loaded with intrigue.
"Excellent move!" Elder Liu immediately moved the piece and, after placing it, savored Wu Boqing’s reaction.
Wu Boqing didn’t say a word; instead, he swept the chess pieces from the board in one motion.
Elder Liu spoke, "Wu Boqing, what’s this about? Are you reneging?"
Wu Boqing answered, "You have an expert assisting you; there’s no point in continuing. Consider this game a loss for me."
His words had a pointed edge, to which Fang Yi responded with a wry smile, "Elder Wu, it was just a casual remark, please don’t take it seriously. Honestly, my skills in chess are quite poor."
"Don’t worry, old man me isn’t that petty. I won’t trouble you over it. However, that move you suggested was indeed brilliant; even I hadn’t thought of it," Wu Boqing said.
Looking at Wu Boqing, who was earnest and genuine without any pretense, Fang Yi smiled and felt reassured since Wu Boqing didn’t seem to mind.
"Elder Fang Yi," Elder Liu suddenly sighed deeply.
"Elder Liu."
"Look at my legs..." Elder Liu said with a smile, exhibiting a hint of coyness.
While Fang Yuying was somewhat clueless and puzzled, Wu Boqing immediately understood, his cloudy eyes suddenly showing a hint of astonishment.
"Elder Liu, your legs have been disabled for ten years, you can’t possibly—"
Elder Liu smiled and nodded, but looked at Fang Yi uneasily, his eyes filled with hope.
