Chapter 287: Chapter 307: It’s Your Turn to Bid
Yang Dingfeng no longer bothered with idle talk, standing up, he declared righteously, "Young Master Bai, ten million!"
As if swept by a breeze, the entire hall returned to silence, deathly quiet, without the sound of a crow or sparrow.
The crowd was incredibly shocked, all eyes turned toward the corner where Bai Mingqi was sitting. Even in the darkness, where Bai Mingqi’s face couldn’t be made out, the audacity and scale of his move could not be concealed.
A pair of conjoined stem lotuses might exist, but they were few and far between. Finding such an identical pair, so tender and enticing like fruit, was no easy task. It was indeed worth spending a hefty sum.
But even so, spending ten million to buy a pair of beauties didn’t seem worth it.
Some had previously lost their heads in the heat of the moment, willing to spare no expense. But now, coming to their senses, they felt a chill of fear.
No one could have imagined Bai Mingqi’s move— it felt as unreachable as a fanciful tale, utterly beyond imagination.
Lin Yuanhao and his brother Lin Yuanchen were pale. They wanted to make a bid, but that was ten million! Though their Lin Family was a commercial dynasty, it was their family who was wealthy, not them themselves.
A few million might be manageable, but ten million was completely out of their reach.
Watching the brothers’ state, Zhou Peilan sitting nearby couldn’t help but sneer inwardly, silently cursing, "Serves you right!"
Both brothers were extremely lecherous, especially Lin Yuanchen, who had barely taken his eyes off her until now.
The hall was quiet for a while before whispers gradually began.
Not only them, even Su Ge’er on stage was astonished by Bai Mingqi’s grandeur. She knew the conjoined stem lotuses she had trained might hold some value, but she hadn’t expected it to be this much. Even she was somewhat tempted.
However, ten million wasn’t particularly tempting for her as an Alliance Hierarch. Her gaze shifted, landing on a dark corner of the hall, anticipating that person’s next move.
The murmurs in the hall were soft. Then, a voice rang out, "Alliance Hierarch Su, could we turn on the lights, please?"
"Young Master Bai has asked, so of course," Su Ge’er snapped her fingers.
Instantly, the lights in the hall brightened.
Song Wuliang lit another cigarette, his tone both melancholy and pitiful, "Why do I feel this scene seems familiar?"
Fang Yi smiled faintly, replying, "Bai Mingqi doesn’t believe in superstitions and wants to arm wrestle with me."
After pondering for a bit, Song Wuliang suddenly understood.
Indeed, just like before when Kong Qingxu had asked to turn on the lights to provoke Fang Yi, now Bai Mingqi was doing the same, showing a defiant streak against Fang Yi.
Once the lights were on, Bai Mingqi stood up and turned to face everyone, softly inquiring, "May I ask... does anyone else want to bid?"
"..."
No response.
The hall was silent; no further bids were made.
Bai Mingqi did not show a triumphant smile. His gaze shifted, falling upon Fang Yi, and he asked softly, "How about you, Fang Yi?"
Suddenly, everyone realized— Bai Mingqi was challenging Fang Yi; Fang Yi was his target.
"To deal with this Fang Yi using ten million, Young Master Bai truly lives up to his name."
"Fang Yi wouldn’t dare to accept, right? Ten million? Does he have that kind of money?"
"Exactly, he’s just a penniless kid, what money could he have to compete with Young Master Bai in terms of wealth?"
Most of the crowd scoffed, many taking pleasure in Fang Yi’s supposed embarrassment.
Yet Bai Mingqi, born into a martial family, was not passionate about martial arts; he was zealous in commerce and had his own company and financial power. Thus, producing ten million was no difficulty for him.
Comparing the two, Fang Yi certainly seemed outshined.
Faced with Bai Mingqi’s provocation, Fang Yi remained calm. He had to admit that Bai Mingqi was a very smart man and a difficult opponent to deal with—even more so than Song Haoyue, Fang Yi hadn’t found the task as challenging.
But then, isn’t it the difficulties that make challenges worth pursuing?
Fang Yi stood up, one hand casually tucked into his pocket. He glanced at the twins on the stage and said, "They really are a fine pair, hard to come across. You bid ten million, which really puts me in a tough spot."
Bai Mingqi said, "I don’t believe for a second that with your usual arrogant attitude, you can’t come up with ten million."
Fang Yi mocked himself, "I’m just a small-time employee at a company. Where would I get ten million from? Even if I worked my entire life, I wouldn’t be able to earn that much money."
"Ha!"
Someone let out a snort of laughter, full of derision.
Most of them were wealthy; to them, ten million was just a number. Hearing Fang Yi’s self-deprecating words, they couldn’t help but feel a sense of superiority. In their eyes, Fang Yi was nothing but a poor boy.
It was at this moment someone disdainfully said, "Just a poor boy. If you’re poor, be poor. If you have any dignity, better roll out of here quickly."
It wasn’t just anybody who spoke— it was Zhou Hongkang, and Zhou Peilan showed a displeased expression upon hearing this. But this was precisely what Zhou Hongkang wanted. He wanted his daughter to give up on Fang Yi completely, so she could marry Lin Yuanhao in peace.
And Zhou Hongkang’s words quickly won the approval of many. Although they didn’t say it, their disdain for Fang Yi, the poor boy, was evident in their eyes.
"Fang Yi, are you saying this as a way of admitting defeat?" Bai Mingqi spoke indifferently.
"I really don’t want to give up. How about this... You lend me a hundred million or two hundred million, then I can continue to bid against you?" Fang Yi said with a slight smile.
With these words, the disdain on the faces of the people intensified.
"Fang Yi, I can’t tell if you’re genuinely foolish or just pretending. How about I lend you eighty or a hundred thousand?" Lin Yuanchen mocked.
"Really? Young Master Lin, that would be fantastic. Please lend it to me right away," Fang Yi replied, taking him seriously.
Ha-ha!
The crowd burst into laughter, their mirth filled with uninhibited mockery and sarcasm. Listening to the tidal wave of laughter, Fang Yi too started to laugh, somewhat foolishly it seemed.
However, while everyone else was laughing, Bai Mingqi’s expression grew more solemn; he had an unsettling premonition growing inside him.
Suddenly, Fang Yi’s laughter ceased, his demeanor turning solemn as he swept his gaze over everyone and said, "Everyone, have you laughed enough?"
The laughter stopped abruptly!
Nobody expected Fang Yi to stop laughing so suddenly and become so serious.
In the middle of everyone’s confusion, Fang Yi slowly lit up a cigarette, took a couple of leisurely puffs, and then looked at Bai Mingqi, whose face had darkened, and said coolly, "You’ll be the second person I set straight."
A cold smile touched the corners of Bai Mingqi’s mouth, "And how do you figure that?"
Fang Yi replied, "I’ll bid one billion. Can you match that?"
Even the ever cautious Bai Mingqi was caught off guard by this.
Bai Mingqi responded coldly, "One billion? Do you think this is Joss Paper?"
Fang Yi shook his head, "You might think I’m joking, but let me tell you seriously, I’m not. My bid is one billion, not in Xuan Cang currency, but in cash."
With that, Fang Yi suddenly turned his head to the stage, "Alliance Hierarch Su, do you accept US dollars here?"
Su Ge’er smiled coquettishly, "Yes, we accept, and British pounds too."
With a slight smile, Fang Yi turned his gaze back to Bai Mingqi, his eyes filled with mockery, "It’s your turn to bid."
