Chapter 98: Chapter 73: Chopping Melons and Vegetables
Hoo—
Accompanied by a sharp, piercing whistle, a cold wind suddenly swept through the vast, gloomy graveyard.
The already low temperature dropped abruptly once again.
A grayish-white glimmer, visible like mist, gradually emerged in the air.
This was a sign of a high concentration of undead aura.
"Gala Gala..."
The eerie sound of bones rubbing together, amidst the vibration of the ground’s dust, emanated from the depths of the soil.
Like sprouts breaking through the earth, bits of dirt and stones rolled off, and a glaring pale white appeared before everyone’s eyes.
It took only a few seconds.
Nearly thirty skeletons of various sizes crawled up from the graveyard surrounding the wooden house.
Their deep, hollow eye sockets quietly watched the people at the door.
Even though they were mentally prepared and had experienced many sudden battles before,
Xia Nan still felt his scalp tingle, and a sense of uncertainty gnawed at him.
Unlike the dangerous and raging demons in the Mist Forest,
these skeletal frames, gleaming with a cold glow, had no flesh or skin, and thus, no possible roars or howls.
They simply stared at you in silence.
Carrying the gray death aura of the air, amid the clatter of bones, they approached step by step.
That invisible pressure was even heavier than facing twice the number of goblins.
For someone with a slightly weaker mental fortitude, they might have already dropped their weapon and turned to flee.
"Hoo."
Xia Nan breathed slowly, exhaling a puff of white smoke in the cold air.
The sword hilt in his palm grew increasingly hot.
Buzz—
Behind him, an energetic and passionate melody from a lute rang at the perfect time.
Instantly, it swept away the previously silent and stiff atmosphere on the field.
Morale was boosted!
Xia Nan suddenly stepped forward, quickly closing the distance while meticulously observing the enemies’ forms.
Compared to those surrounding skeleton undead nearby, drawing ever closer,
this skeleton, which crawled out from beneath the Tomb Guardian’s bone whistle, appeared to be a more elite individual.
The robust skeleton was visibly larger by several sizes—nearly two meters tall;
its bones were even whiter, with the joints faintly covered in a grayish-white glow, enhancing the body’s stability and making it less prone to falling apart.
It even wore a half-piece of filthy leather armor, with a small round shield atop its left forearm, while its gnarled bony fingers gripped a rusty, cracked one-handed sword in its right hand.
It seemed every bit like an adventurer.
Never having fought such an enemy, unsure of its strength, Xia Nan dared not be careless.
Scanning his surroundings, he calculated the combat distance between them in his mind.
Finally, at a position just out of reach of the opponent’s sword, where he only needed to step forward to strike.
His pace slowed,
switching to a more defensive stance, maneuvering to find an opportunity secretly.
But surprisingly, despite its grand entrance, like an adventurer skeleton with its own background music,
its reactions were noticeably slow.
As if not yet accustomed to the environment of the Material Realm, when Xia Nan had already left its front and maneuvered to its side,
it belatedly swung its rusty sword with force at the air in front of it.
"Bang!"
The cracked blade sank sharply into the soil.
It did not break.
But the resultant counter-shock force caused the skeleton’s arm gripping the sword hilt to tremble violently.
Xia Nan could even clearly see the bony fragments falling from the surface of its ulna.
The sharpness of his gaze, originally due to intense focus in combat, instantly turned odd.
Yet, he didn’t pause.
Combat instinct prompted him to seize the opportunity when the opponent was exposed.
His right arm bent to gather strength, while his left foot suddenly stepped forward.
[Vortex Slash]!
Buzz—
The swirling mist turned the dark brown Wooden Sword into a sharp arc of light.
The bright, scorching flame’s glow flashed across the air.
The seemingly strong and robust pale bones, under the sword’s flaming blade,
had no defense whatsoever.
Like paper, they were instantly cut and broken.
So smoothly and swiftly, even Xia Nan himself failed to react in time.
The next second, the skeleton was cleaved in half by him, like a broken toy, falling to the ground.
"Huh? That’s it?"
Looking at the skeleton in front, like an overturned turtle, unable to flip over, swinging its half-blade aimlessly with its face to the ground,
Xia Nan suddenly felt that he might have been overly cautious just now.
It made sense too.
The Full Level [Vortex Slash] he trained to at level 5 allowed his combat ability to exceed that of ordinary low-level adventurers;
and the Blue Equipment Wooden Sword in his hands, with its damage bonus against undead creatures, was almost overpowered against the likes of Tim and the skeleton minions now.
One hit injures, a critical hit is a kill.
One sword per target, faster than cutting vegetables.
Casually delivering a final blow, he split the adventurer skeleton’s head in half.
Then he severed its right arm, still clutching the one-handed sword. Seeing that it seemed thoroughly dead, motionless,
Xia Nan backed up a few steps and directed his gaze to the other side of the battlefield.
The lute sound that once echoed in the air had unknowingly stopped.
The slightly heavy lute, which was a bit cumbersome for the half orc’s short body, quietly lay on the ground.
The vast majority of "Minstrel" schools, even those far from transcending boundaries, where spellcasting abilities are still weak,
rarely rely solely on musical instruments to sustain a complete battle by themselves.
They often need the help of teammates and carry convenient weapons.
When necessary, they would engage in combat like an assassin or warrior.
As a Lightfoot Half orc, Alton would spend the rest of his life traveling to every corner of the Aifala Continent, naturally possessing decent combat ability.
He wielded two exquisite, miniature small curved blades, deftly weaving below the skeletons.
Like a weasel’s nimble figure, those clumsy, stiff skeletons couldn’t catch him at all.
Mere steps forward and their leg bones were sliced apart, unceremoniously falling to the ground.
Meanwhile, Ingram, the sheriff of Kalanfor,
finally, for the first time, demonstrated his combat strength to Xia Nan.
"Buzz bang!"
The one handed hammer, glowing with golden light, struck a skeleton’s skull hard.
Like a micro bomb, golden light flashed across the hammer’s surface.
Taking another look, half of the skeleton’s skull had vanished.
The Holy Light, with its equally lethal effect on undead creatures, allowed the sheriff’s enemy elimination speed to differ little from Xia Nan’s, armed with the Wooden Sword [Green Pine].
A single hammer usually left the skeletons before him without combat ability.
Another decisive hammer blow ensured their complete demise.
His combat style was as tough as his stately, burly physique.
He seldom dodged, charging into clusters of skeletons and smashing away indiscriminately.
Even if a skeleton got close, it could only scratch shallow white marks on the surface of his Light Plate Armor.
Xia Nan felt a hint of envy in his heart.
"This set of standard Equipment must be issued by the official, not needing his own money."
"Maybe even the maintenance fees are reimbursable."
Tsk.
I wonder if River Valley Town is short of a sheriff.
