Chapter 94: Chapter 69 Priest
The morning light was faint.
The gradually rising footsteps on the streets, along with the thin smoke curling up from the chimneys, awakened the small border town of Kalanfor, located in the southeast of the Sevia Kingdom, from its slumber.
The storm that howled through the night, accompanied by thunder and rain, subsided as the clouds dissolved with the night under the dawn’s glow.
Xia Nan walked down the street with dual swords on his back.
The post-rain air, fresh and moist with a hint of earthiness, filled his nostrils with each breath.
It invigorated his already vibrant spirit, making it even more exuberant.
"Whoosh."
A slight and distinct fluttering sound came from above.
Looking up, he saw a robin with a silvery-white body flying swiftly and nimbly across the sky.
It perched leisurely on a nearby protruding eave, grooming its feathers with its sharp beak.
Seemingly aware of Xia Nan’s gaze, it stopped and stared back at him blankly.
It tilted its head.
"Xia Nan, we’re here."
The reminder came from the Half orc by his side.
He was instantly brought back to reality, looking towards the other side of the street.
It was a grand and magnificent church.
The gray-white outer walls were composed of smooth, polished bricks, with flying buttresses on both sides displaying a rule-like elegance amidst complexity. The towering spire stood under the sky, scattering soft and conspicuous golden light under the morning sun.
Xia Nan marveled at the splendor of the church.
Yet at the same time, as he looked at the majestic building before him, a strange feeling suddenly surged in his heart.
They were located in the center of Kalanfor now, surrounded by tidy roads, standalone houses, and large shops everywhere.
Yet, compared to this church, everything else seemed dusty and dull.
It impressed him like a modern glass skyscraper abruptly erected in a sparsely developed suburban area of some fifth-tier small city from his previous life, amid streets cluttered with disorganized utility poles and worn-out signboards.
It’s as if the nutrients from all the buildings in the surrounding area, even the entire town, are concentrated here.
Out of place.
"This church is... quite something."
With an indescribable tone, Xia Nan remarked.
"Aren’t they all like this?" The Half orc seemed unfazed, "Not every Divine is as indifferent as the Lady."
"Building such places as grand as possible helps them harvest... uh, gather faith."
Regarding these might-be-offensive words to Alton, the sheriff showed no obvious reaction.
He just acted as if he didn’t hear anything, walking at the front, lifting Jeff’s stretcher alongside the guard.
They entered the church.
Compared to its grand and magnificent exterior, the interior structure and decorations, equally splendid and elegant, were even more exquisite.
Thick walls supported arched ceilings above, with finely carved colonnades descending from both sides. Rows of red-brown pews lined up meticulously, pristine and smooth stone floors reflecting the warm morning light, as if paved with golden brilliance.
What caught the most attention, though, was the giant stained glass window facing the front hall of the church, directly opposite the main door.
Its brilliant yet not disorderly colors sparkled with a fantastical gloss under the dome’s brilliance, compelling anyone entering the church to instinctively gaze upon it——
A figure with blurred features, with flowing silver hair.
In his left arm, he held a heavy tome of law, while his right hand carried a simply-styled scale.
Behind him, within the depths of a radiating golden sun, there seemed to be a faint outline of a castle.
"The Sun God of Contract and Order, Amanata."
With an array of highly indicative symbols of authority, Xia Nan immediately recognized the identity of the figure depicted on the window.
Remembering the image well, his gaze followed the velvet carpet between the pews, all the way forward.
He was greeted by a middle-aged man with a kind and gentle face.
His yellow and red robe was bright and conspicuous, with the Holy Emblem of the golden sun hung around his chest by a crimson silk ribbon.
The overall appearance resembling more of a judge than a Priest.
His eyes closed slightly, head tilted upwards, lips moving, seemingly in prayer.
Unaffected by the footsteps from the doorway.
Devout and focused.
It wasn’t until a few minutes later, as the prayer concluded, that he slowly opened his eyes.
His serene gaze swept over the group, finally resting inquiringly on Ingram, the front of the group.
The sheriff quickly stepped forward a couple of steps, stopping at the steps next to the altar.
With hands naturally hanging by his sides, he bowed his head:
"Sir, a townsfolk suspected to be infected by the Power of the Undead attacked the town’s inn last night."
"A merchant, who is also my friend, was therefore tainted by Negative Energy, hoping to receive Holy Light’s healing."
Hearing this, the man with a Priest-like appearance, remained calm, his gaze past the sheriff, now resting on Jeff on the stretcher.
He nodded slightly:
"Certainly."
Then he looked at Xia Nan and his companion, speaking gently:
"And these two are...?"
"They are adventurers traveling with the merchant."
Ingram replied.
"Thanks to them, a tragedy was averted last night."
Hearing this, a smile of appreciation appeared on the Priest’s kind face, and he slowly spoke:
"The Lord’s radiance will bless you, brave travelers."
Xia Nan nodded in response.
Yet internally, his mind began to race.
Undoubtedly, the amiable middle-aged man standing before him was the Priest of this "Sun God" church.
Judging by his appearance, perhaps in his forties?
Considering the existence of supernatural powers in this world, and his holding such a special position.
His age might be even older.
On the other hand, from the way he communicated with the sheriff, the relationship between the two——
Perhaps... a superior-subordinate dynamic?
While he was pondering, the Priest had already descended from the altar, arriving in front of them.
He held a scepter made from reddish-brown wood in his right hand, with a yellow Crystal Stone the size of a baby’s fist embedded at its top.
With a glance, Ingram understood and bent down, unraveling the bandages from Jeff’s wound.
In an instant, as the pale bone stump and blood-red flesh were exposed before him, the air was filled with a thick scent of blood.
The Priest’s expression remained unchanged as he lightly raised his scepter toward Jeff’s broken leg.
Buzz——
Bright and gentle light emerged from the yellow Crystal Stone atop the scepter.
Almost instantly, the flesh at Jeff’s severed leg started to grow and intertwine, the wound healing at a visible pace.
Xia Nan stood aside, seemingly calm on the exterior, yet turmoil rose inside him.
"Wow, this effect is much stronger than a Healing Potion!"
His gaze instinctively settled on the gentle-looking middle-aged man, pondering secretly:
"A professional?"
