Chapter 308: Chapter 163 Beastification
"You’re quite brave."
Xia Nan eyed the slender curly-haired girl ahead, his gaze carrying a trace of peculiarity.
Neum, although renowned as a big city, is only so when compared to the small towns and villages around it.
The people living there may be slightly more educated on average than those in River Valley Town filled with adventurers.
But certainly not like the modern peaceful society of his previous life.
The frequency of events such as theft, robbery, kidnapping, and murder is extremely high.
Not to mention, the presence of all sorts of strange supernatural powers in this world.
Walking skeletons, ghost witches who drag you out of your house at night to skin and dismember you...
Even for himself, encountering something like this in the dead of night, without his current strength, wouldn’t dare venture out to investigate the situation; at most, he would just wrap himself tighter in his quilt, bury his head in it, and pretend not to hear.
And the young woman in front of him, named "Harriet," was clearly just an ordinary person, without the possibility of roaring and turning into a two-meter-tall barbarian.
The Grey Tree Lane she was in was obviously not a wealthy area with constant guard patrols, and she even lived alone.
Given these circumstances, she actually dared to venture out alone at night to investigate the source of clearly unusual sounds.
It was hard to say whether to praise her courage or wonder if she was tired of living.
"I’m not usually like this!"
Seeing the adventurer with a sharp aura on the sofa in front of her, Harriet hastily waved her hand.
"After my parents passed away, I’ve lived alone for many years, and I have some basic sense of precaution."
"Sometimes, if I get up too late, I’d even rather starve all night than go out, waiting for daylight and more people around before going out for breakfast."
"But that night, for some reason, I suddenly became so careless."
"Thinking back now, it scares me."
Listening to her describe her feelings, Xia Nan frowned slightly, speculating that it might be some kind of enchantment spell that affected the girl in front of him.
He also grew more curious about the Buck family’s experience next door.
"You followed the guards into the house afterward, right?"
"What did you see inside?"
Upon hearing these words, Harriet’s expression suddenly turned uneasy, as if recalling some profoundly unpleasant scene, even her body trembled slightly.
"Dead, they were all dead."
"It was like they were attacked by some kind of beast... severed hands, toes, arms, blood everywhere."
"Sorry, I was too scared at the time, I just glanced inside and backed out."
Xia Nan nodded in understanding and asked further.
"So, does that mean Buck and his family all died that night?"
"No, Mr. Buck... might still be alive." Harriet shook her head, "Later, the sheriff mentioned that they didn’t find Mr. Buck’s body in the house."
That simplifies things greatly.
Only two possible outcomes:
1. Buck is still alive; 2. Buck is already dead.
Regarding the former, if Buck indeed didn’t die that night, he is most likely the culprit who killed his own family, or he was taken away alive by the assailant for some reason.
Regarding the latter, given that the girl’s statement didn’t mention finding his body inside the house, perhaps he was taken away by the real killer.
But just like adventurers use goblin’s left ears to claim bounties, if someone received a bounty for Buck and took action, they would at most chop off his head as proof, without needing to take the entire body.
Unless Buck’s body had something special about it.
Clear thoughts flowed through Xia Nan’s mind.
He suddenly felt as though he had a bit of a detective’s talent, thinking quite comprehensively.
"So... my task is to find the killer?"
He raised the small note the Association gave him, bearing the address of this house, and asked.
"Yes." Harriet nodded.
"But isn’t this something for your West City District sheriff to handle?"
Xia Nan couldn’t help feeling increasingly confused.
But as soon as the words left his mouth, a few extra thoughts popped into his mind.
"Adventurers" in people’s eyes are often those who hunt demons in dangerous forests and dungeons, making a living by earning bounties.
When Xia Nan first crossed into this world, he also thought this way.
But as he ventured deeper into this field, his original ideas gradually changed.
Like the previous collection task for the "Firefly Garlic Vine" and the escort mission where he met Jeff, and even the Spore Druid bounty that’s been on the Association task wall for over half a year.
The tasks adventurers can do are, to some extent, not restricted.
As long as you can afford it, commission the Association, and the Association is willing to accept and post it on the task board.
Theoretically, if you lost a pet at home and want someone to find it for you; or feel lonely at night and urgently need a strong, warm body to satisfy desires.
You could hire a qualified adventurer in the form of a task.
In a rather blasphemous way, as long as the money is good, and the adventurer association isn’t worried about causing trouble.
Even the Divine beings sitting high in the Divine Country could be posted on the bounty, pasted on the Association’s task wall.
Of course, who’d be willing to take on those tasks, that’s another matter.
