Chapter 84: Chapter 84 Negotiations with the Military

On the second platform, Skeleton Shooters bent their bows and shot arrows, but the arrows fell before reaching the enemy.

There was no way around it, as these were all Apprentice-level Skeleton Shooters. On flat ground, they could only shoot arrows a distance of just over a hundred meters, and that was with the use of specially processed bows and arrows.

Now on this slope, at a distance of about two hundred meters, it was beyond the attack range of the Skeleton Shooters.

"Such a pity, if only we had Black Iron level shooters, we certainly wouldn’t be so utterly powerless."

Currently, they were relying on sheer numbers, using the attrition of their forces to wear down the enemy’s physical strength and defense weapons. It was a matter of who could last the longest, a battle that only creatures without life could endure.

Normal people, perhaps, wouldn’t engage in such battles from the very beginning.

If they were forced to participate, it would only lead to continuously decreasing loyalty, and defection or even turning their weapons against their allies was not impossible.

"Why can’t we build the road from the bottom up?"

While Cosette was pondering how to make the Skeleton Shooters more effective in the last stretch, Dorola suddenly pointed to the structure of the road below and said something.

Cosette, looking below, eyes flickering like flames, realized he had been rigid in his thinking again.

There was no help for it; this was a shortcoming of Undead Creatures, and something those who had just turned into Hero Units couldn’t avoid.

"You’re right; I hadn’t thought of that."

Cosette wasn’t a hero consumed by vanity. In fact, vanity wasn’t very important to the Undead. For them, hierarchy and becoming stronger were what mattered most.

With Cosette’s decision, the Skeleton Labors began to busily make the flat first tier of steps into several layers. Although it was a small change, it made the subsequent march much easier.

Alongside the road, stakes of wood were driven into the ground, acting as handrails to reduce the possibility of skeletons falling off.

Even though they were just makeshift handrails, they still made survival easier and reduced losses.

After all, they didn’t have the actual blueprints for handrails, so being able to do this much was quite impressive. It must be said that the craftsmanship of the Skeleton Labor was genuinely good; making something that looked so rough on the battlefield was no easy feat.

Meanwhile, in the rear, the Skeletons that previously had nothing to do turned themselves into lumberjacks, rapidly producing many wooden stakes, which were then carried by Skeleton Soldiers who dropped their weapons to take on the role of transporters.

"Why are there so many Skeletons? How many more do they have?"

At the makeshift combat headquarters right behind the Three-bend Bridge, the commander came in person to bolster the ranks.

"A lot, three hundred thousand, five hundred thousand, or perhaps even more. We’ve discovered that a continuous stream of Skeletons is gathering, and by our estimates, their numbers could possibly reach a million," someone reported.

"Report, those Undead have changed tactics."

"What’s going on? What are they doing now?" The commander, already worried about the scale of the Undead forces, asked immediately upon hearing the news.

"The Undead are cutting down the forest and are creating simple wooden walls at the edge of the Three-bend Bridge. They are also leveling the ground and building stairs. Below the third road, two tiers of stairs have already been built."

Indeed, under the cover of intense battle, Skeleton Labor had succeeded in constructing two tiers of stairs. With these two tiers, more could be added; it was just a question of how much they could expend.

The number of Skeleton Labor brought wasn’t large, but creating a path to the top seemed feasible given the current situation.

"This is trouble. If this continues, we won’t hold out."

"No, we are stronger. Even if they make it up here, they won’t be a match for us."

"And what then? Even if we manage to annihilate them, they would only lose a portion of their Skeletons and could send more at any time. But our losses? Who will compensate for that, and who will resist the Trolls in the north?"

It wasn’t that they had no enemies; on the contrary, they faced numerous Troll Tribes to the north.

In order to combat those Trolls, they had exhausted all strategies and couldn’t afford significant losses.

"Enough arguing. It seems that among those army units, there is someone with great ability in command, possibly the legendary Hero Unit," they said, while their own forces hadn’t managed to develop any.

"A Hero Unit, huh? If that’s the case, we might really have a big problem."

"We can’t wait any longer. The longer we wait, the more losses we’ll incur. And if this continues, it won’t be good if Fang Jie doesn’t want to negotiate with us." The lieutenant colonel finally spoke.

"Had our strengths been similar, I wouldn’t worry about him being unwilling to negotiate, but clearly, his power greatly exceeds ours."

The intelligence reports hadn’t detailed just how many forces Fang Jie had. Initially, they thought having tens of thousands of Skeletons was strong enough, and that such a number couldn’t possibly fight their way up.

But if that number rose to the millions, it would be different.

Add to that, they were still constantly clearing the road, with reaching the top just being a matter of time.

Without even losing a hundred thousand Skeletons, they might be able to charge all the way up. Furthermore, once the third road was built to the halfway point, their Skeleton Shooters would become effective, their casualties would start occurring, and their suppressive power would decrease.

"I’ll go and negotiate with Fang Jie," said the staff officer, rising to his feet.

"No, you stay. I’ll go myself," the commander held the staff officer back. "We are the weaker party now. We must show our sincerity."

As he said this, the lieutenant colonel walked out. He knew he couldn’t initiate the discussion area until he left the Lord Mansion.

And now he was praying that Fang Jie would be inside the Lord Mansion. If Fang Jie was out, he would be unable to contact him.

Fang Jie, who was studying skills, suddenly found someone trying to contact him. The tag was such that Fang Jie couldn’t just ignore it. It was Li Mingshu, with the military rank of lieutenant colonel. If not deceiving him, this was a big shot.

Of course, a big shot from Earth, things now were not as they had been before.

Fang Jie was curious as to why this person was contacting him; what could they possibly want to trade?

"Hello, I’m Fang Jie. What does Lieutenant Colonel Li want to discuss with me?"

In the previous discussions, there had been no sign of this person, so Fang Jie wondered whether he had been lurking unheard or simply had nothing much to report. Of course, if the other party made one demand after another, Fang Jie wouldn’t indulge them.

With the developments over such a lengthy time, Fang Jie’s own mentality had gradually undergone some changes as well.

"Hello, Fang Jie, I’m a lord on the Northern Plateau. We have thousands of warriors, but we’ve recently had some conflicts with the forces you are expanding to the north
