Chapter 498: Chapter 498: A Battle to Decide the Outcome
And so, the battlefield in the center grew increasingly vast, and four legendaries erupted into a terrifying battle on the ground.
In no time at all, the ground became riddled with craters, looking as though it had been bombarded by artillery shells. And the bombing was still ongoing. Some nearby Elemental Catapults had started moving to other locations.
If these creatures were to attack the Elemental Catapults, the loss would be tremendous.
The Elemental Catapult had various advantages, but after all, it was not a regular troop type.
If an enemy got close, the catapult had no Combat Power. Even a bronze-level enemy, given time, could completely dismantle an Elemental Catapult.
Behind its powerful force, the inherent fragility of the catapult was starkly evident.
However, two of the legendaries were now too preoccupied to care about the fate of the catapults.
Under the relentless assault of the catapults, the opposing defenses quickly lay in ruins. On the battlefield, the armies slaughtered each other mercilessly, and at that moment, the brutal combat fully erupted.
A group of soldiers retreated, and then new soldiers stepped in to fill their ranks.
After all, the frontline here was not very long, but the forces amassed by both sides were truly massive.
For a while, it was impossible for all the soldiers to enter the battle and fight hand-to-hand, so they had to rotate in turn. Under normal circumstances, such a battle would not end in ten days or half a month, even if it were a head-on conflict.
But this time was clearly different, as after bombing the defensive works, some of the catapults began to turn around.
Produced by Functional Buildings as machinery, they boasted incredibly high accuracy in their strikes.
Even amid the ever-changing battlefield, the catapults could precisely target the enemy formations and then bombard them with Elemental Light Balls. Often, just one bombing was enough to completely collapse the enemy’s lines.
Even the most elite troops would basically be finished after a few such bombardments.
The battle in the sky ended the quickest. In just half a day, a large number of Griffin Knights plummeted from the sky.
At this point, the attackers held an absolute advantage, and not many of the Griffin Knights managed to escape. Following orders, those Griffin Knights charged twice more and then were heard from no more.
Because by then the sky was filled with the enemy, and of their own Griffin Knights, fewer than three hundred remained.
In such a large-scale battlefield, three hundred silver-level Griffin Knights were really inconsequential.
And the opposing Griffin Knights, at first glance too numerous to count, probably two or three ten thousand, now loomed as a threat in the sky, causing the collapse of the battlefield to accelerate even more.
One day later, the battlefield was essentially divided completely, and all that awaited them was defeat.
The reason the frontal battlefield was still holding on was primarily due to the existence of two Legendary Level powerhouses.
But it looked as though these two were only just holding on. With more and more enemies surrounding them and the situation growing worse, the two knew they couldn’t escape, and their condition deteriorated further.
"This Kapala Island really hasn’t experienced war for many years," Fang Jie said. Even through the screen, Fang Jie could roughly tell that although those two were legendary, they had little combat experience, or they had not fought for a long time.
Though they grew quickly in combat, a life-and-death struggle allowed no time for errors.
They were not the protagonists; they couldn’t possibly surpass their opponents in such a short time.
Koural’s uniqueness meant high skill but lacking stamina. However, such skills taxed the two who were not accustomed to fighting far more than they could handle.
Even though they had somewhat adapted later on, they were not completely adjusted, and the toll on them remained enormous.
Just after two days, both felt they were nearing their limits.
At that moment, Koural, who was full of tricks and adept at slaughter, seized an opportunity first. His body erupted with Evil Qi, instantly impacting the opponent’s mind, followed by a move that nearly resulted in mutual destruction.
Of course, Koural would not really end in mutual destruction, but many of his lethal moves appeared that way.
The opponent, having their mind seized, sought to flee, but there was no chance.
Koural pierced the heart with a sword thrust, then split the opponent in half. The dying legendary raised a hand, his face etched with unwillingness. He regretted that he should not have been present here; why hadn’t he followed the example of others?
Discovering his comrade’s death, the other legendary was momentarily struck dumb.
The enemy, seasoned from a Hundred Battles, instantly seized this opportunity and with one move, cut off one of his arms.
Having lost an arm, his Combat Power plummeted drastically. Against the relentless attacks of the opponent, this legendary held out for less than half an hour before his head was lopped off, dying unwillingly.
As the two legendaries perished, the morale of the soldiers immediately crashed to rock bottom.
Our forces seized this moment to pursue fiercely, and the mountain pass finally completely collapsed. The soldiers who had been holding out there all withdrew, leaving behind a vast expanse of ruins.
"We lost, we lost after all," Muse’s face turned unspeakably despondent. "It’s all the fault of those wastes. If not for them, how could we lose, and why did we lose so quickly? But soon, it’ll be your turn, and I will be waiting for you."
Muse drew his Longsword, listening to the chaos drawing nearer, then promptly placed the sword horizontally against his throat.
"Commander!" The people nearby tried to stop him in horror.
But due to the swiftness and suddenness of the act, by the time they reached him, it was already too late.
The officers remaining at the command post now descended into utter chaos, unsure of what to do. Without Muse, they had lost their anchor, and not all of them were Elites.
Many were there simply because of their status and lineage.
"What do we do, what do we do? What should we do now?"
"Flee, we cannot stay here. To stay means a sure death."
"Where do we flee to? I think we should surrender," and in an instant, the command center became a tumultuous mess. Everyone was on the verge of losing their minds, and it didn’t take long before they were arguing noisily.
But this time was different from the usual; suddenly, the doors were kicked open.
Everyone turned to find a number of people rushing in. "What are you here for? Don’t you know what this place is?"
"We certainly do, and now you are captured. Who is your commander?"
Seeing everyone look toward the Corpse on the floor, the newcomers were taken aback. They hadn’t anticipated finding the commander with whom they had been in contention dead, making their mission rather awkward to complete now.
