Chapter 472: Chapter 472: Beastman Island Shrinks Back
Beastman Island was abuzz, with a massive fleet of ships converging and a formidable army assembling.
"Hmph, if it weren’t for their numbers last time, we definitely would have made them regret it."
Gulas said angrily, after having returned to face the leader’s criticism. As a Legendary warrior, it was his first time fleeing without completing his mission.
So, this time Gulas personally led the team, an act of atonement for his previous failure.
Last time, the enemy had overwhelming numbers and an insurmountable advantage. Surrounded by so many Gold-level experts, even Gulas didn’t believe he could break through, so he had no choice but to retreat.
Moreover, the enemy’s leader, Fang Hao, was also a Legendary Expert. If not, Gulas would have attempted to decapitate their leadership.
Fang Hao’s aura was exceptionally formidable, presenting a grave danger to Gulas. He did not wish to act recklessly against such an enemy because he was unsure if he could best Fang Hao.
But this time was different, with three Legendary Level experts accompanying him.
Even though those two were no match for him, they were still Legendary Experts nevertheless.
And with such military might, taking Jade Island would be a breeze. He didn’t know the specifics of that place yet, but just its geographical location and size meant it couldn’t be left in the hands of others.
Just as the army was mobilizing, someone suddenly rushed over.
"Lord Gulas, the chief commands you to return immediately."
"What’s happened? We’re about to set off. Don’t bother me with other matters at this time."
"The chief has ordered the cancellation of this expedition."
Gulas got enraged instantly, "What did you say? Canceled! Do you have any idea how long we prepared for this war, how many resources and manpower we rallied? To call it off just like that? Are you committing treason?"
"What’s going on?" A Beastman approached from afar.
This Beastman’s white fur fluttered gently, a sight no one dared underestimate because he was also a Legendary Werewolf.
"This fool claims the campaign has been canceled. Is this a joke?"
"Those were the chief’s words, not mine," the messenger responded.
The Werewolf spoke up, "Explain in detail. The chief wouldn’t cancel such a significant operation without good reason; it would be a huge loss and a hit to his own prestige."
The war order had indeed been given by the chief, although Gulas had been the one managing the preparations.
Without the chief’s command, Gulas couldn’t have mobilized such forces, nor these individuals.
The messenger quickly explained, "Quisha Island has made a public declaration of their strengths, deploying twenty Legendary Experts at once and proclaiming Jade Island as theirs, guarded by ten Legendary Experts."
"Twenty Legendary, are you telling the truth?" Everyone around grew pale.
Beastman Island only had slightly over a dozen Legendary warriors on the surface, not reaching twenty even with those concealed.
How could Quisha Island, a mere island, summon so many? A thought struck Gulas—was it because an Undead Force had risen in the south that they could present so many Legendary warriors?
If that were the case, it was indeed a danger, for only the southern mainland could potentially be their base.
The Undead wouldn’t deploy all of their Legendary forces at sea, so this was just a fraction. If more were brought out, Beastman Island would be in trouble. If this was true, they needed to devise a strategy.
"Without a doubt, many have personally verified it; they are indeed Legendary Experts."
If the opposition dared to reveal such force, then it must be genuine, or else it would be disastrous if exposed as a lie.
"If that’s so, we truly can’t attack them head-on. We’re no match for them with just this bunch," the White Wolf reasoned, as no fool would engage in a war doomed to fail.
Such a conflict could very well cost lives, a risk not worth taking.
"This must be reported."
Gulas immediately objected, "No, absolutely not. Reporting it would make us look incompetent. A powerful Undead Force has arisen in the south, and doing nothing would be our neglect of duty."
Their purpose on this island was twofold: one was to monitor the Elves across them.
Another was to occasionally scout the south to prevent any unforeseen upheaval. They had previously dismissed the south as a wasted area incapable of fostering a significant power.
Even if large fragments fell there, they wouldn’t rise too quickly.
Yet, who could have anticipated the overlooked south would suddenly become what it had, birthing a formidable Undead Force that rapidly took control of Quisha Island.
If they couldn’t handle this power themselves, reporting it was an option.
But to report without having noticed initially would invite punishment from above.
And that kind of punishment, even for a Legendary Expert, was too harsh to bear.
"What should we do then?" The White Wolf’s expression changed, realizing the crux of the problem.
"We hold our ground for now and engage in small-scale skirmishes," Gulas thought quickly. "At the same time, send out Scouts to reconnoiter the south."
"We’ll report these developments, preparing the higher-ups for changes in the south."
"If it’s their character, they might ignore it even if they know. When the Undead threat grows, our plea for help will reflect their neglect, not our failure to discover it."
The White Wolf was confused; that’s the way of the wise, speaking in ways most didn’t understand.
"Never mind. Let the chief and you decide on these matters. We just need to follow orders."
Not bothering to understand, that was the characteristic of most Beastmen. Gulas felt frustrated, as few of them liked to think, exhausting the rare few who did.
This matter needed long-term planning; this war was clearly not going to proceed.
"Maybe the Elves have already acted. That could be to our advantage." Gulas gazed towards the Elves, a thoughtful gleam in his eyes. Best to return and discuss further.
Thus, what had been a tumultuous war affair calmed down swiftly.
Everyone was in disbelief at how Beastman Island, once seemingly unstoppable, had so suddenly retracted.
