Chapter 334: Chapter 334 They Have Scattered the Mage Group
The high-ranking officials of the Blue Sand Kingdom, already feeling the heat of battle, could only heavily promote this victory as the greatest since the start of the war.
They also declared that if the New Moon Kingdom did not immediately cede territory and pay reparations, they would suffer an even more brutal attack.
No sooner had this announcement been made than the New Moon Kingdom could no longer contain its rage.
Originally somewhat restrained, the nobles now lashed out with increasing violence on the battlefield. The situation became ever more gruesome as hordes of Skull Soldiers roamed everywhere, forcing even many civilians to take up arms.
For those Undead did not care who they were; anyone caught was summarily slaughtered.
It could be said that those who had not managed to evacuate were all facing a fate of massacre. Only by taking up arms, each and every person a soldier, could one hope to survive amidst the chaos.
To avoid another disaster befalling them, the nobles of the Blue Sand Kingdom, not wanting their own families to come to harm, chose to disperse the Mage Teams they had previously assembled.
They transported them to the front lines through various discreet channels.
As for those who were reluctant to go, that was out of the question. For one thing, the Mage Group of the other side had already been hailed as heroes, and if their own Mage Team fled without fighting, it would be a disgrace.
On the other hand, the enemy Mages had proven their formidable strength with their own lives.
Their Attack Power had devastated elite teams many times their own number, to say nothing of what they could do if they were unrestrained. Such a formidable force was something the Blue Sand Kingdom simply could not afford to ignore.
Thus, though these Noble Mages were extremely unwilling, they were still distributed and moved towards the battlefield.
"What, they’ve dispersed them all? Investigate for me; we must find out where they’re heading."
The nobles and front-line commanders of the New Moon Kingdom were all holding their breath, determined to eliminate the opposing Mages. Once the spies were fully operational, those Mages had nowhere to hide.
It was their own fault for being so conspicuous in the beginning; everyone knew them.
So now, even though they wanted to keep a low profile, it was useless—they were still recognized from time to time.
"I don’t know who the blabbermouth was that told others how to identify a Mage. If I find out who it was, I’ll make sure they suffer."
"You’re right, isn’t that just sabotaging ourselves?"
The group was abuzz with discussion; this was the eighth time they had been identified. Being recognized used to be a good thing, an opportunity to show off, but now, being recognized spelled danger.
Every so often, enemies would appear in the sky and launch attacks against them.
Just a few days ago, several teams had been attacked, with most slain on the spot.
During this time, their defensive strength had increased, but so had the enemy’s. After a series of desperate battles along the way, these individuals had gradually shed their immaturity and become qualified Mages.
On the battlefield, they knew which Spells to use for the best effect, how to achieve the greatest outcome with the least expenditure, and how to protect themselves to relieve the warriors’ burden.
In short, these were lessons that could not be learned in school, only on the battlefield.
And the price paid was the occasional report of a Mage Team being ambushed and killed.
Suddenly, White Bone Griffin Knights appeared in the sky, signaling that another battle was imminent. The main force of the battle was not them since Empire Sky Knights were already providing protection.
It wasn’t that the Sky Knights were of lesser value than Mages; it was just that these Mages were too high-status.
Not keeping them all safe would undoubtedly lead to serious issues. In the end, the battlefield essentially boiled down to matching Gold Combat Power against Gold Combat Power, now it was just that the front had shifted significantly rearward.
In the sky, bones and bodies continually fell, each one causing heartache for both sides.
Especially for the Blue Sand Kingdom, their losses of Sky Knights had been quite substantial.
"Everyone, hold on. Once reinforcements arrive, there will be no issue."
The fight was not just in the skies; it was the same everywhere else. The ground Mages needed to cast Spells for support, and all the enemy soldiers and Undead Soldiers who had sneakily made their way through had to be fended off by themselves.
Only after the Skeleton Flying Dragons flew over did the enemy realize the mission was impossible and then retreated.
When the next attack would come was anyone’s guess.
"When will these days end?" a Mage said with a helpless look.
"This is the battlefield. Once you’re on it, you’re not in control anymore. All we can do now is figure out how to protect ourselves so we can survive. After all, we chose the path of the Mage."
Indeed, it had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now they had become the enemy’s prime assassination targets.
In hindsight, there was certainly some regret.
Not just amongst themselves, but the nobles and the Royal Family were feeling the same regret.
"How is everyone considering this? We need to grow the Mage Profession; we can’t just rely on the nobles, we need more people. However, if there are too many Mages, the status of the profession will no longer be as noble."
"That’s okay, aren’t knights no longer noble as well? Nobility comes from being part of the Nobles, not from the Profession."
Heads nodded in agreement. Knights had once been an exclusive, highly prestigious profession for nobles, but now even commoners were becoming Knights, and the profession had already spread. Now it was merely expanding to Mages.
Mages have a high requirement for Talent, and if it could be expanded to include commoners, then the pool of students they could recruit would be much larger.
Most crucially, the nobles had previously monopolized the Mage Profession to ensure their own status, but now that they had to go to battle, it seemed that Mages would be appearing even more on battlefields in the future.
If only nobles could serve as Mages, it would be highly dangerous.
Therefore, they all had convened together to plan the recruitment of Civilian Mages. As long as they passed the test, they could enter the academy for further study. On the battlefield, Noble Mages also needed cannon fodder and underlings.
"I agree; the Mage is an expensive Profession after all. If Civilian Mages are to develop, they must be under our control."
Eyes lit up with realization; being so expensive was precisely why Mage was considered a noble Profession. Their families might lack Talent, but they had money and Resources—that was what mattered most.
Those who wished to pursue a future as Mages would need to depend on them. Indeed, it was an excellent idea.
