Chapter 321 Martha Earl’s Calculations
Chapter 321: Chapter 321 Martha Earl’s Calculations
After Martha Earl left, she first looked around, then drew a circle at the rear side of Earl Jia Siwei’s territory. "Let the follow-up troops come to this location; we will set up camp here."
"This place? It doesn’t seem very suitable. There’s no special terrain, and the surroundings are too complex."
The deputy officer scanned the surroundings, puzzled. Ordinarily, the places chosen for setting up camp were expansive and open, facilitating observation of the surroundings. The larger the troop size, the more this kind of place was chosen.
For smaller numbers, usually, locations that were easy to defend but hard to attack were selected.
However, the area in question was just not very appealing. Although it was open, there were quite a few forests nearby and varied topography.
If the enemy approached stealthily, the difficulty of detecting them would undoubtedly increase significantly.
Perversely, the terrain behind them was very peculiar and not easy to pass through. If the enemy attacked, they would literally have no route of retreat.
But if they wanted to charge forward, Earl Jia Siwei’s territory was next to them, and they would have to choose a detour, costing them time. The complex terrain made it difficult to charge.
"Just this place; don’t you think it’s exceptionally good?"
The deputy officer looked at Martha Earl, puzzled, not understanding why this usually competent commander would choose such a place.
"By situating ourselves here, we form a pincer position, forcing the enemy to eliminate our two sides to win. And Jia Siwei is further ahead, a tough nut to crack. What do you think they will do?"
What else could they do but divide their troops? Some would monitor them to prevent any actions, while others would attack Earl Jia Siwei’s territory to eliminate it first.
They would at least need to destroy this part of the defenses to make their subsequent path easier.
But to ignore them would be even more impossible. With so many troops gathered here, who knew what they could do? If they suddenly took action against them, the outcome would be dreadful.
Therefore, the opposing troops would either not act or come charging over.
"But, Earl Jia Siwei has already declined our invitation."
Martha Earl’s face showed a hint of a mocking smile: "He declined, yes, but who’s to say? After all, this is our secret conversation; those from Blue Sand Kingdom don’t know."
The deputy officer finally understood what Martha Earl meant; it was to drag Jia Siwei down.
Indeed, if he were in the opponent’s shoes, not knowing their pact, he would definitely consider them allies. Martha Earl’s Strength was formidable, and their numbers were large.
But publicly, it was Jia Siwei’s well-organized army that posed a greater threat.
The conflict hadn’t fully erupted yet; it was just small-scale probing by the vanguard. Jia Siwei’s military strength stood out conspicuously here. The enemy wasn’t afraid of Jia Siwei but would surely feel his threat.
So, once they struck, they would inevitably wipe out Jia Siwei.
That way, they could drag him down, and his territory would be utterly destroyed. Without troops, Earl Jia Siwei would be unable to reclaim his territory, becoming a noble without lands.
Once the troops were exhausted, along with the loss of his lands, it would absolutely bring him down a peg or two.
As a traditional noble, Martha Earl felt great disdain for someone like Jia Siwei, a commoner-turned-noble. The cooperation during battles was fine, but afterward, it was increasingly uncomfortable.
Especially since the man had worked under her before, because of this matter, in noble circles, Martha Earl hadn’t been spared from some gossip lately.
Understanding Martha Earl’s intentions, the others would certainly not refuse.
Especially the Noble Young Masters, who one by one excitedly came over and quickly set up camp. It looked as though they wanted to wage a defensive battle here.
On the other hand, Jia Siwei was informed immediately.
"Lord, they are stationing right next to us; are they going to act as our bodyguards?"
"Exactly, using their military strength to protect our territory makes us safer."
Jia Siwei furrowed his brows and after a long moment, glanced at the others: "Our military strength looks sufficient at this stage, but overall, it’s not very strong; at most, it’s just enough for self-defense."
"Look, they are in this spot; from the enemy’s perspective, it appears as if we are teamed up to intercept them here. They are definitely dragging us down."
Jia Siwei traced lines on the map, his brows growing tighter.
"We don’t need to be afraid, right? Even if a few Gold-level powerhouses come, we can hold them off."
These people clearly did not grasp the severity of the situation. From Fang Jie’s information about the hired troop strength on both sides, Jia Siwei knew this war was not the minor skirmish it seemed on the surface.
"If a few Gold-level fighters come, we indeed could win, but how many of us would be left? What if dozens or even hundreds of Gold-level combat power comes?"
Everyone shut their mouths; however confident they were, they didn’t believe they could withstand that level of power.
"It won’t be that serious, right? It’s just a minor battle; it won’t escalate to that level."
"There are things you don’t know, but remember, this war is not merely a skirmish," Jia Siwei did not explain further, as doing so now would only incite panic.
Although he had many contingencies prepared, he didn’t want to use any of them.
Otherwise, wouldn’t that show he was too incompetent? If Fang Jie really handed over such a large territory to him to manage, how many would be convinced? That would only lead to greater trouble.
Now it was best for them to think they had no retreat, so they could unite and overcome the difficulty.
"The Lord is right; they want to drag us down. If the Blue Sand Kingdom sees us as a significant threat, they definitely won’t mind splitting their forces to annihilate us, no matter how remote our location."
In fact, their territory was already on the outskirts of the New Moon Kingdom, only slightly connected. The previous Blue Sand Kingdom was also only marginally connected, and normally, such places were overlooked.
But for a battle of that scale, they wouldn’t mind taking a detour to wipe them out.
