Chapter 156: Night Raid on the Cliff Fortress
Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Night Raid on the Cliff Fortress
"This is the spot, huh? Let the first wave be ours, what a clever calculation indeed."
"Yeah, if it weren’t for the plan of our Lord, I really wouldn’t want to engage in this kind of battle." Although Skeletons are all Undead, those who reach the level of Hero also have their own thoughts.
They fear not death, but that does not mean they wish to die in vain for others.
Even because they are produced as Undead units, they lack the conventional Undead’s resentment towards the living and their craving for flesh and blood; combat is simply for the command and benefit of their master, nothing more.
"Stop the useless chatter, there are eight combat zones this time, we’re just responsible for one here, to break an opening first. See that stronghold over there? Destroying that is our goal. When we get to the other side, remember to find Jia Siwei and give him some extra benefits."
Fang Jie had issued orders regarding this long ago, and all the Hero Units present were aware.
Typically, these border battles happened once a year, mere skirmishes.
But this year was special, the Blue Sand Kingdom wanted to take advantage of the sufficiently cold winter to seize more land. Especially since this year they could hire Undead, if found effective, they might trigger an even larger scale of conflict.
If the Undead prove ineffectual this time, then it’ll be the same as in previous years.
So now, only these Undead were on the move; the rest of the Kingdom’s armies were only partially mobilized.
In the middle of the night, Skeletons began to climb up from the side of the cliff. Leading the way were the Skeleton Laborers, whose role was to adjust the more difficult parts of the cliff for easier ascent by the forces that followed.
Skeletons do not fear death nor know what it is to be frightened; they can easily traverse paths normal people would not dare to tread.
The reason lies in the Fortress established atop the mountain valley. If this stronghold isn’t destroyed, simple acts of hurling stones and shooting arrows from high ground can devastate troops passing below.
Without opening this place up, Blue Sand Kingdom’s army utterly lacks the means to enter on a large scale.
Even as Undead, a head-on attack in the face of such assault would lead to heavy casualties.
Preparations began three days prior, transporting a massive number of Skeletons to the mountain. The day of battle arrived, and the Skeletons finally set off. One after another, Skeletons charged downward from the mountain.
Some Skeletons stumbled as they ran and then tumbled down.
"What is that, from where did these Skeletons come?" A Skeleton fell onto a rooftop before crashing to the ground below.
Several of its bones broke, but the Skeleton still clutched its Longsword, swinging at the soldiers it encountered. The sudden appearance of this entity startled the Fortress soldiers.
"Look up there, it’s coming from up there."
"Enemy attack, enemy attack, everyone prepare for battle!" Instantly, the Fortress descended into chaos.
"This is bad, our military installations are meant for valley defense, not internal threats." Someone realized the dire situation.
At that moment, facing the Undead, they could only rush forward with the weapons in hand for close combat. The Undead fell like rolling white stones, ceaselessly descending upon them.
The cliffs and precipices difficult for Humans to climb posed no issue at all to these Skeletons.
Even if some Skeletons fell and were missing limbs, they still ferociously attacked their foes.
"This is bad, Skeletons are also rushing up from the base of the mountain!"
A soldier pointed downwards, referring to the sole path they used to ascend. That route was well within their range of attack, but internal turmoil had rendered their Combat Power ineffective.
"Some people, go and block the path."
On that front, there wasn’t much concern, as it was just a small path. Stationing a dozen soldiers to guard in turns would usually be sufficient to hold it.
But a sudden scream pierced the air, and the Fortress Commander looked up to see a shadow engulfing the sky.
Without anyone noticing, some white birds had appeared above. Each large bird dropped a Skeleton Warrior, and then joined the fray—it was Black Iron-level combat.
Ordinary soldiers couldn’t easily withstand such adversaries.
These White Bone Vultures had been added to Fang Jie’s ranks later on. Initially not included in the hiring, after Blue Sand Kingdom offered more silver, Fang Jie dispatched some White Bone Vultures as a form of deterrence.
Suddenly, there was an explosion at the mouth of the path, a Skeleton General led the charge and sent the soldiers flying.
"Silver Level, damn it, what’s happening this time?"
The Commander felt a bitter taste in his mouth, for there was not a single Silver Level being within the entire Fortress. And now, the enemy had Silver Level troops leading their assault, the Fortress was doomed.
Just as he feared, despite the soldiers’ valiant defense, they were gradually overwhelmed by the rising tide of the Undead.
The Undead attacked from all directions, leaving no room for resistance.
the battle erupted swiftly and concluded even more rapidly. In less than half an hour, the Human army had completely collapsed and was annihilated.
"All elite forces, to have fought to the end without surrendering." The Skeleton Hero said, recognizing that for a living troop to manifest such a will to fight was no simple feat.
"We’re Undead, what does that have to do with us?" Another Skeleton chimed in.
"Even if we are Undead, enemies who fight to the last are rare. If they weren’t absolute elite, they wouldn’t be positioned here by the New Moon Kingdom. Anyway, what about this Fortress?"
"It’d be a shame to dismantle it, whoever occupies it owns it. How about we sell it to the Blue Sand Kingdom?"
"Sounds good, in any case, it’s all the same to them, just a matter of initiative."
The Fortress was thus preserved, quickly tidied up, and the Skeleton Army continued their march. After passing through this valley passageway, what awaited them was the hinterland of the New Moon Kingdom, and a vast territory stretched forth as an open road.
In front, there was a city; although a border city with strong defenses, it wasn’t much before the Skeletons. The abrupt outbreak had caught the opposing army unprepared to assemble.
A portion of the troops transported the Corpses back, while the rest surged forth under the cover of darkness.
Because of the night, it wasn’t until they drew sufficiently near that the city’s soldiers discovered the Skeletons. From afar, alarms rang, and the military sprang into action.
But the army was not fully in place, and the Skeletons had already reached the edge of the city walls.
