Chapter 131: Chapter 131: Investigating the Vampire’s Lair

"Hello, we are refugees seeking shelter here, could you offer us a job?"

Outside a small town, two people shouted at the townspeople. Hearing this, the soldiers guarding the town looked at each other in bewilderment; it was rare to see refugees coming to their town.

"Refugees, why are you fleeing? It doesn’t seem like anything has happened to the Kingdom."

The two people quickly said, "Winter is approaching and there’s not enough food in our region. To ensure our families survive, we had to flee."

Hearing this, the guards understood. Each winter, it was common for people to flee their homes, but it was unusual for them to come here.

"This is Flower Plateau, you surely know what this place is, right?"

The guards were somewhat surprised; this place was very well-known. People from other regions might not be familiar with it, but those from around Flower Plateau definitely would be.

"We know, but we had no other choice."

The two men looked at each other, and one sighed, "We’ve heard that this winter is particularly cold, and there are many refugees. Places that accept outsiders are few now."

This was something that could be easily found out with a little inquiry, so it was not strange for people to be aware of the situation.

"I see, well, we can accept you here. However, you will have to pay the blood tax. And since you’re outsiders, you’ll need to pay twice the amount that locals do."

That was no small amount; the blood tax for ordinary people merely caused some weakness without affecting their health.

But twice as much would be different; those not strong enough would find their health deteriorating gradually.

In the past, many who came here could not survive for more than a few years before dying. But once here, leaving was not permitted, so escape was impossible.

This information had been spread by people who previously sought to learn about the Flower Plateau.

Even outside, where the presence of Demons was more pervasive, the further one went, the more distorted the information became.

"We, we know, surviving a few more years is better than dying."

The two men showed a bitter smile and were soon accepted into the town. There were no strategic assets or special treasures here, so there wasn’t any concern about saboteurs.

The outsiders, in fact, were more welcome. By accepting more outsiders, the residents could be seen as contributing greatly. Maybe one day, with a certain status, they might not have to pay the blood tax anymore.

The so-called blood tax was a levy imposed by the Vampires here, meaning blood had to be drawn monthly in a fixed quantity.

As soon as one reached a certain age, they were obliged to pay the blood tax. But it was precisely this system that allowed Vampires and humans to coexist for long periods; otherwise, who could bear it?

What they didn’t know, however, was that just after the two men entered the town, they shared a smile that only the two of them could understand.

"From tomorrow, start gathering information and be careful not to get caught."

"Don’t worry, I used to do this job. If it weren’t for bad luck and getting caught, I wouldn’t be in this position."

The younger one, with a simple and honest face, didn’t seem concerned.

"Regardless, we still need to be cautious. Let’s get the blood drawn today. Hmph, let those monsters enjoy once; after that, it’s a dead end for them." The Lord didn’t collect these Vampires to treat them as honored guests.

Based on their understanding of the Lord’s side, it was even less likely it was to become a Vampire.

Within a few days, the two of them had easily scouted out the place. At night, a small bird descended from the sky and alighted outside a large dormitory.

The two men opened their eyes and quickly got up, claiming they needed to use the restroom.

Then, one stood outside while the other whispered inside as if talking in his sleep: "This town houses two pure Vampires and a dozen Blood Slaves, who usually sleep in the manor’s backyard."

"On every full moon night, they awaken to feed on blood. One of them has reached Silver Level, and the other is only at the Bronze Level. Their relationship could be father and son, or perhaps father and daughter."

The little bird nodded slightly, then flew away.

The two men smiled, making no extra moves before returning to their beds. They were now ready to leave this place at any moment.

Meanwhile, other agents in different areas were also reporting the information they had gathered.

Perhaps due to the long absence of war, the vigilance of the people on Flower Plateau was exceptionally low. Otherwise, such information would not have been so easily obtained.

"It seems they are stronger than I expected, but then again, how else would the New Moon Kingdom allow them to persist?"

Qin Shulan found that, according to the collected information, there had to be at least a dozen individuals on the Flower Plateau who were at the Golden Level, possibly even more.

They had a powerful army of Blood Slaves and other Human Military forces. Yet these were not the foundation of their existence; their true Strength lied in the relationships with other Nobles around them.

Many Nobles hoped to become part of the Vampires when they aged, to continue living.

It was these relationships that had allowed for so many years of peace. Otherwise, the few at the Golden Level wouldn’t mean much to the New Moon Kingdom.

Not to mention, this could be discerned from the Empire of Blue Sand, which had been able to contend with them for years. When Blue Sand Empire came to negotiate with the Lord, their delegation’s guards were all at the Golden Level.

"If the Lord takes over this place, then the biggest enemy up next would be the surrounding Nobles. But as long as they are dealt with cleanly, those Nobles might not be willing to fight the Lord to the death."

While gathering data, Qin Shulan also delved into research. The information collected during this period was almost sufficient. To be cautious, however, Qin Shulan continued to prepare more.

Until this day, Qin Shulan had amassed information on a hundred and fifty Vampires.

She knew it was time to act. Waiting too long could cause trouble, and it would be bad if they were discovered. Just then, the staircase to the highland had been constructed, and the military force was in position.

Beneath the highland, a massive fleet composed of more than a dozen ships lay hidden.

These ships, concealed here, faced enormous risks every day. The longer they stayed, the greater the danger.
