Chapter 114: Chapter 114: Territory Talent Quicksand Tunnels
Not long after, Fang Jie arrived near the abandoned Lord’s Cottage.
Not far from there, a mummy had been unearthed from the ground. From the mummy’s features and clothing, it was clear this was indeed a person who had come from Earth, though this person seemed to be a foreigner.
"Typical death-seeking foreigners, not knowing when to give up in the desert."
Fang Jie shook his head speechlessly, but regardless, the other party had left him a nice spot.
He then had his army take position, followed by the initiation of a disaster-level trial. Having gone through it once before, Fang Jie already knew the limits of these trials. No matter how much they intensified, where could they really go?
On the contrary, the other party would leave him plenty of corpses, the only problem being that these were of a somewhat low level.
An hour later, the trial began, and it brought forth a new species, the Gray Rat-man, a creature fond of living in the desert but more commonly found in normal environments.
Just like before, he effortlessly wiped them out, this time refraining from directly casting his Territory Talent.
Such a Talent projection in a territory was sufficient to have just one per area. If it weren’t for transportation concerns, Fang Jie wouldn’t want to waste resources. Although there was some distance to his base, the site was still within the desert.
That projection-based base was located behind the desert, facing the Blue Sand Kingdom.
"Let’s go with a random Talent," Fang Jie decided.
"Talent selection complete. Talent acquired: Quicksand Tunnels."
"What is this? Are you supposed to dig holes in the desert? Even a well-digging Talent would’ve been better than this," Fang Jie muttered while opening the panel in front of him to take a look.
Quicksand Tunnels: Establishes a network of Quicksand Tunnels in the desert. Entering at one end allows for rapid transit and emergence from the other end.
Construction requirements: One Skeleton Labor per meter, 2 spirit points, and a continuous stretch of sand.
"This Talent could be useful. Even though it can’t be upgraded or have its effects improved, in the desert, it’s quite formidable." It felt as if Fang Jie got precisely what he wished for, receiving a transportation-related Talent.
It was indeed a disaster-level Talent. Even though this Territory was only an Affiliated Territory and the overall strength of its Talents decreased, it still originated from a disaster-level trial.
Fang Jie did some quick calculations: for a tunnel 100 kilometers long, it would require one hundred thousand Skeleton Labors and two hundred thousand spirit points. The spirit points weren’t an issue. Skeleton Laborers could easily be made as long as there were corpses.
Moreover, he had the Fission Ability. He really didn’t need so many Skeleton Labors altogether.
Considering the entire desert area, it seemed there were not too many stretches of 100 kilometers. Fang Jie hadn’t calculated precisely, but he felt the project was reliable.
A few large Quicksand Tunnels connecting key locations would suffice, and he could create smaller ones where necessary.
"The question is, how fast is the transport speed? Let’s construct a larger one first, directly connecting this place to that base with the projected Talent."
Fang Jie looked at the resources in hand and decided to begin construction immediately.
Rows of Skeleton Laborers arrived at the designated spots, then one after another, they plunged into the sand as if diving underground. This caused a shortage of Skeleton Laborers in the desert for a moment.
However, it was not a concern. With several bases at his disposal producing in tandem, the speed of creation wouldn’t be slow.
The Quicksand Tunnel appeared, resembling a burrow with sand swirling around its entrance, giving off a peculiar sensation. On closer inspection, it seemed like an insect poised to devour everything on the surface.
Fang Jie released his Death Crow and watched it fly towards the tunnel.
In an instant, the Death Crow seemed to gain incredible speed, but then it was out of sight. Due to the distance, the connection with the Death Crow was lost, and it dissipated automatically.
"Let’s send a person to try," Fang Jie thought, and sent a Skeleton Hero through.
In no time, the Skeleton Hero leaped out of the tunnel and landed on the ground.
"The speed is very fast, and there’s no discomfort. It indeed reaches the projection base," the Skeleton Hero reported.
Now reassured, Fang Jie decided to try it himself. Upon entering the tunnel, he instantly felt engulfed by a force, and in the next moment, his speed accelerated to an extreme. He couldn’t even comprehend the rate at which he was moving.
It seemed to be the effect of some special power, not just a matter of speed.
Before Fang Jie could figure it out, he was ejected at the other end. A force threw him up to a certain height, then another force kicked in, allowing him to descend slowly. The only problem was adjusting to the high speed.
At that moment, Fang Jie felt lightheaded and slightly disoriented.
The sensation was similar to motion sickness, yet different in some way.
"The whole process took less than a minute, and that’s close to two hundred kilometers," Fang Jie now understood the length of the journey. After all, he just had to look at the materials consumed to realize it.
"What remains to be seen is the transport speed. But given the circumstances, the transport speed depends on how large the tunnel entrance is." Fang Jie ordered his forces to start running into the tunnel in an orderly queue.
The entrance seemed to spout, constantly ejecting massive numbers of Skull Soldiers. The Skull Soldiers landed and had to quickly move aside to avoid collision with their following comrades.
Being Undead, they didn’t experience any discomfort.
"In one hour, the total transport count exceeded one hundred thousand—not bad at all. We can properly establish this great artery of the desert."
Fang Jie had no intention of heading to the front lines, staying behind to accept the influx of Skeleton Labor and then using them for Fission right there.
"It’s a shame it can only be used in the desert."
There was one requirement for constructing Quicksand Tunnels—it had to be within a connected stretch of sand land. If another terrain interrupted it, the tunnel would either have to go around or stop, which limited the use of this Talent.
Perhaps that was the limitation for challenging the natural disaster level of an Affiliated Territory. He supposed that gaining such a Talent in a normal Territory would not be restricted to the desert.
But with this ability, in the desert, Fang Jie could claim to be the undisputed ruler.
This Talent was, in fact, a construction-related Talent which meant that as long as the Territory existed, Quicksand Tunnels could be built anywhere within it, provided the conditions were met.
