Chapter 3040: Prophecy
"No rush. Abe Akaya was safe for now. Calm down, catch your breath, sit down, and then tell me exactly what happened."
"O-okay."
Cleriway took a deep breath to calm herself, then continued, "The elves’ Ancient Tree of Life was already aged. On top of that, its multiple accumulated injuries from over millions of years had started to recur repeatedly. Its vitality gradually faded, and as time went on, its condition became worse and worse. Recently, it had reached the brink of death."
"Since tens of thousands of years ago, the Elven tribe had been searching everywhere for a way to repair the Ancient Tree of Life."
"It was the elves who found me. I originally thought that Abe Akaya’s strength could help delay the aging of the Ancient Tree of Life. I wanted to use that method to return to the elves and find my mother. But after returning with them, I realized that the elves didn’t intend to use Abe Akaya’s power to delay the aging of the tree—they wanted to fully absorb his power..."
"I’m sorry... Brother Fang Heng, I really didn’t know it would cause this kind of consequence..."
"It’s alright, Cleriway."
Fang Heng touched his chin, his eyes showing a thoughtful expression.
The Ancient Tree of Life was indeed dying, but even a dying camel was bigger than a horse. Back when Abe Akaya hadn’t yet completed his advancement into his complete form, he still wasn’t a match for the tree.
Now, it was hard to say.
Abe Akaya should be capable of wrestling with the Ancient Tree of Life.
They wanted to absorb Abe Akaya’s power?
What a joke.
Abe Akaya had reached his current stage in such a short time precisely by devouring and absorbing his enemies’ strength all along.
Fang Heng actually wanted to see who would end up absorbing whom in the end.
He asked, "Cleriway, do you know how the elves’ Ancient Tree of Life was absorbing Abe Akaya’s power?"
"I’m not completely sure, but I suspect they used the Elven tribe’s altar."
Cleriway recalled the situation at the time and added, "After I returned to the Elven tribe, I discovered that they were using the power of the Elven altar. Through a piece of Abe Akaya’s vine that I had given to the Tree Spirit tribe, and under the influence of an ancient ritual, the elves might be able to absorb Abe Akaya’s power without even needing direct contact."
Cleriway felt even more guilty.
She only wanted to meet her mother. She thought a small piece of Abe Akaya wouldn’t matter, but she never expected it would bring him so much trouble.
"Where exactly is the altar?"
"It’s within the elves’ territory. After leaving the prison, go right and keep to the right side. When you see the area heavily guarded by Elven sentries, there will be an illusion barrier generated by the Tree of Life. After passing through the illusion, you’ll see a large magic array. That’s the altar zone."
"I see. I’ll go take a look."
As Fang Heng spoke, he narrowed his eyes slightly, quickly formulating a feasible plan in his mind.
"Cleriway, I can’t take you with me just yet. I need you to stay here a little longer," Fang Heng said after a moment of thought. "Also, remember what I’m about to tell you. If they ask, this is what you’ll say."
As he spoke, Fang Heng leaned close and whispered a few lines in Cleriway’s ear.
Cleriway’s eyes showed surprise as she listened.
Say that? Could it really work?
"Did you remember?"
Cleriway nodded. "Mm, okay, I’ve memorized it."
...
Three hours later.
Grotto.
Captain Kapa of the Flying Squirrel Clan led two Flying Squirrel guards around the cavern, looking left and right.
The murals on the walls looked like cryptic talismans to them—they couldn’t understand a single thing.
What now?
They had been wandering inside the cave for more than half a day and still hadn’t figured out anything.
Would the elves kick them out?
Kapa already sensed suspicious glances from the Water Star Clan guards stationed in the cave.
Just as he was scratching his head in anxiety, Fang Heng’s voice suddenly rang in his ear.
"Kapa, how’s it going? If everything’s fine, give me a light cough."
Kapa’s heart lifted with joy upon recognizing Fang Heng’s voice. He covered his mouth and gave two soft coughs.
"Ahem, ahem!"
"Good. I’ve more or less figured out the situation inside the elves. Now, do as I say."
Kapa nodded lightly and walked toward the Water Star Clan guard as instructed by Fang Heng’s soul-form.
The guard had already grown impatient. He thought, "How could translating a few symbols take this long?"
As he saw Kapa approach, he asked, "Captain Kapa, have you found anything?"
"We previously compared the textual information left by the Tree Spirit tribe with some of the writing on the stone walls, and we’ve done a preliminary translation."
Following Fang Heng’s wording from the soul body state, Kapa continued, "The content relates to the elves’ Ancient Tree of Life."
The guards of the Water Star Clan immediately showed a change in expression.
The elves strictly controlled information about the Tree of Life—very few outsiders knew about it.
"What kind of content?"
In the center of the cave, the Elven matriarch Doris, who had been sitting with her eyes closed, suddenly opened them upon hearing the words "Ancient Tree of Life." She stared fixedly at Kapa.
Kapa instantly felt an overwhelming pressure bearing down on him and instinctively shrank his neck. He spoke in a small voice, "It’s some kind of prophecy about the Ancient Tree of Life. The prophecy on the stone wall says the elves’ Ancient Tree of Life is reaching the end of its life, gradually decaying, and the elves will face an unprecedented crisis."
"And then? Continue."
"In the prophecy, corruption and decay mark the beginning of new life. Hope must be sought in desperation, and only through destruction can disaster be avoided. That will open the elves’ future."
New life... a new future...
Doris murmured to herself, unable to stop herself from thinking of the elves’ increasingly deteriorating Ancient Tree of Life.
Since tens of thousands of years ago, the elves’ ancient tree had been continuously declining.
As time passed, the rate and degree of decay accelerated.
The Elf Council had tried every method they could think of to restore the tree’s vitality, but all efforts had failed without exception.
Was the tree truly fated for extinction?
Did they really need to cultivate an entirely new ancient tree?
Doris did not completely trust Kapa’s words and asked, "Is that all?"
"Forcing intervention in the process of life is futile—it only invites destruction. There are also some records... that, uh, seem to say..."
Kapa’s voice grew smaller as he sneaked a glance at Doris, unsure whether to continue.
"No need to hesitate. Just say what the translation revealed."
"In the prophecy, the Ancient Tree of Life will perish in a great disaster, and the elves will face annihilation."
Disaster?!
Doris frowned deeply, growing even more suspicious.
Was it symbolic, or did it refer to the Seed of Ouroboros?
The Elven world had never suffered a disaster before.
