Chapter 82: D29. Merlin’s Beard_4
She seemed like she’d never drunk alcohol before.
After all, alcohol that drowns brain cells isn’t welcomed in a Mage family.
1. The strongest one?
2. The most expensive one?
3. ...How about something cheap?
4. Do you have any recommendations...?♛

"Do you have any recommendations?" The Hero’s gaze flitted about, hesitant for a long time before finally speaking up.
"Um—" The Servant didn’t mock the obvious inexperience but instead pondered for a moment.
"Since it seems to be your first visit, why not try this one?"
[Barkeep’s Recommendation—]
1. Butterbeer
2. Malt Wine
3. Ale
4. Honey Wine♛
5. Cream Ale
6. Firebrand Wine (10)
7. Berry Mead
8. Lechans Velvet (20)

"Honey Wine? Then I’ll have that."
The Hero knew nothing about wine, but hearing the word honey naturally evoked thoughts of a sweet taste, so she quickly nodded in agreement.
"Got it, please wait a moment." The Servant gestured for the Hero to find a table to sit down.
The Hero looked around, intending to find an empty corner to sit down and drown her sorrows in alcohol for the first time in her life.
But she noticed someone at another table was waving at her.
[Interesting Guest is—]
1. Border Count
2. A beaten-up young man and his complaining Mentor
3. Two Female Adventurers
4. Adventurer Guild Master and two other Guild Leaders
5. Drinking? How about playing cards instead!
6. Peculiar Cleric
7. White-robed elderly Mage♛
8. Tavern owner washing a golden plate
9. Princess Knight, Blue Cleric, Red Mage, and a seemingly ordinary boy (?)

He looked even older than her grandfather.
He was dressed in a white robe, sporting equally white long beard, and propped next to him was a Magic Wand half a head taller than the Hero, with a Longsword resting at the side of the table.
Obviously, he was an old Mage.
But unlike the unsmiling grandfather, the white-robed Mage seemed kind, chuckling as he beckoned the Hero.
"Child, come over here."
The Hero hesitated for a moment but then walked over.
"Hello, do you need something from me?"
"Nothing much, nothing much, just that an old man wants some young company when drinking."
The white-robed Mage smiled affectionately.

"Here’s your Honey Wine."
The golden liquid slowly swirled in a wooden cup, emitting a sweet and slightly alcoholic fragrance.
The Hero had just sat down at the table when the barkeep brought over this golden drink.
He gave a slight smile.
"Honey Wine is a drink that suits everyone, it can even provide a pleasant experience to first-time drinkers."
"Thank you..."
After politely expressing her gratitude to the barkeep, with the white-robed Mage opposite her showing no intention of speaking, the Hero took a sip from her cup.
The rich sweetness was a delightful surprise, and the warmth that spread through her belly dissipated much of her gloom.
"This Honey Wine is quite good, isn’t it? It’s brewed with deep lake water, which gives it a clearer taste and a unique flavor compared to others," the white-robed Mage winked at her.
"Quite the connoisseur," someone nearby voiced their agreement.
1. Are you a Battle Mage?
2. Anything troubling you that you’d like to share?♛

Nodding to a guest nearby, the White-robed Mage watched the Hero with a cheery smile.
"If you have any troubles, feel free to share them with this old man. Although I might not be able to help you, it’s always better to voice them out than to keep them bottled up inside."
Influenced by his demeanor, the Hero took another sip of the sweet Honey Wine, and under the warm sensation spreading within her chest, she began to speak—
Undervalued for lacking a Mage’s talent, cast out from home after making mistakes, and failing to achieve good results while trying to learn Spells for the first time.
Although it took only a brief sentence to describe it, this succinctly captured most of the sadness and misfortune in the Hero’s short life.
Even she herself felt a bit dazed and surprised after she had organized her thoughts and voiced them out.
This trouble, despite its simplicity when summed up, weighed heavily on her.
The White-robed Mage listened silently, occasionally taking sips of Honey Wine from his cup, seemingly brewing his next words.
[Suggestions of the White-robed Mage—]
1. Spells, value quality over quantity.
2. The longer route can sometimes be a shortcut. (Information: Second-transfer Profession, Soul Mage)
3. There are also Spells that can be learned without directing elements.
4. Have you ever seen a Flame Demon?♛
5. Have you heard about the Soul Mage? (Second-transfer Profession)
6. Why not try the Spiritual path?
7. Don’t resist your Talent, child. (Beast Spirit Mage level 20 Skill acquisition)
8. Why not try becoming a Magician?
9. Why not try a simple Spell? (Taught: Flash Skill LV?)
10. Critical Success/Extreme Failure

Note: As the White-robed Mage’s attitude score didn’t exceed 90, his help is limited to guidance, or a single trivial lesson.
[And why would someone like the White-robed Mage be here?]
1. Invited to perform a fireworks show.♛
2. Merely passing by.
3. Attracted by the burning clouds.
4. Actually, he is a friend of the Hero’s grandfather, here to confirm a Taboo Legacy (?)

"Child..." The White-robed Mage looked at the Hero with deep sentiment.
"Thank you, Grandpa, for being willing to listen to my grievances."
After speaking out, the Hero, indeed feeling much lighter, thanked the White-robed Mage.
"I know these troubles might seem odd to you..."
"No, no, no, not at all," the White-robed Mage interjected.
"In my view, it’s not odd in the slightest. Wanting to live up to others’ expectations is quite normal, all the more so when those others are your own kin."
Reminiscing, the old Mage’s face wrinkled into a nostalgic smile.
"And regardless of strength, those who maintain their Determination, always manage to achieve great things.
"I once knew someone, even shorter than you, who was such a person. He accomplished a great feat, something that the wisest King and the most Wise Mage couldn’t do. He is worthy of respect, worthy of admiration.
"It’s just a pity that your Determination didn’t receive a response... What a shame."
The old Mage shook his head repeatedly.
"Is that so? Indeed, I also feel that if I could do better..." the Hero followed up, but the old Mage interrupted her.
"No, no, it’s not you I’m pitying, but your parents.
"Child, they don’t realize what a precious thing they’ve missed and lost."
Praised so directly, the Hero bashfully lowered her head.
"How... with someone like me..."
"Be more confident! Child!" The old Mage glared, startling the Hero with his raised voice.
"I am very pleased to see that you didn’t change because of this, that despite misfortune, you haven’t given in to self-pity or resentment towards others. You should be proud of yourself for that!"
"I, I will," the Hero nodded promptly.
In the past, her dear friends too would get slightly angry, patting her back to boost her confidence...
It was unexpected that an old man she had just met would say similar things. Should she perhaps try harder in this aspect?
"Hehe, then, as a return for sharing your story, let me tell you one as well," said the White-robed Mage with a softened expression, seeing the Hero pondering earnestly.
"Child, have you ever seen a Flame Demon?"
[Does the Hero know about the Flame Demon?]
1. Yes
2. No♛
D2=d2(2)=2
"Flame... Demon?" The Hero repeated the unfamiliar term with a blank expression.
She hadn’t even heard of it, much less seen one.
Amused by her expression, the White-robed Mage chuckled.
"It seems you don’t know, no worries, I’ll start from the beginning.
"It’s a story that took place a very, very long time ago—"
