Chapter 254: D88. Son of Inferno_4
Although the Water Light Battle Skirt was activated, since a Sapphire was used, her Magic Power was still quite plentiful. Coupled with the Magic Power absorbed by the Finger Claw, it was enough for her to maintain this battle-ready posture.
Despite these Black Gate Sect followers being much weaker than the Sand Lizardfolk she had previously encountered, merely threatening them was enough to scare their captain into showing himself.
Yet, these people had appeared deep in the Highland, and could potentially self-destruct at any moment, so the Hero could not afford to take them lightly.
"You don’t need to know who I am, I’m not really interested in conversing with you."
The Hero looked at the Black Gate Captain with eyes like a snake stalking its prey, causing this well-experienced, nefarious man to avert his gaze and nearly drop the dagger in his hand.
"Drop your weapon, answer my questions, and I might allow you and your companions to leave this place."
The Hero’s tone was calm, her gaze still as cold as ice.
But she pressed her lips together, and ultimately decided not to immediately strike down with lethal force.
Indeed, as the Black Gate Captain initially claimed, the Hero didn’t fully understand the existence of the Black Gate Sect.
She knew they were fanatics, villains, those that must be vigilantly guarded against and are difficult to forgive. But as to what evil deeds they specifically committed, what their purposes were, their doctrines, and how they operated, those details were not well-known to the Hero.
Long ago, a dear friend once asked if her father was connected to the Black Gate, but her father was a Pantheon Mage, a Military Merit Viscount, and could be considered a guardian of public Security in the city where the Hero grew up.
Previously, the Hero sneaked out of her home more than once to play with her dear friend; the fact that she, as a Lady Viscount, could freely move between the civilian areas was proof.
If there was a warrant for the Black Gate Captain in front of her at this moment, perhaps she might have reconsidered.
However, in the Hero’s eyes, she had suddenly interrupted these people and then killed four of them with a single punch. Even though they were Sect followers, such casualties should have been heavy enough.
Indeed, had it not been for the initial Sect follower’s decisively self-destructing, she would have tried to save him.
Regardless, they were not Goblins; they were Humankind.
"I..."
The Black Gate Captain clearly didn’t expect the Hero to speak like this, he paused in place, unsure of how to respond.
[Black Gate Captain’s cooperation (121-72=49,51+ success)]
D100=d100(94)=94
However, the pause lasted only a moment.
"I, no, this subordinate understands! Thank you, my lord, for your magnanimity!"
After understanding the Hero’s words, the Black Gate Captain immediately showed an extremely cooperative attitude.
He didn’t even need the Hero to repeat herself a second time; he didn’t even utter a single line of argument or confirmation of proof and threw away the dagger he was previously struggling to hold onto.
More than that, he took a long breath, his face showing relief as if the dagger smeared with lethal poison had been forced into his hand by someone else.
"Please ask anything, I will withhold nothing and spare no detail!"
His attitude was so swift and straightforward that it caught the Hero off-guard for a moment.
However, since he seemed to have entirely given up any plans of resistance, this alleviated her surprise and also relieved her somewhat.
Since he was willing to cooperate, that was definitely good; questioning whether he had ulterior motives would now be endless.
The Hero focused her mind and organized her questions.
[The Hero’s inquiry]
1. What is your purpose?
2. How do you stop the Great Demon from being released?
3. How many people do you have?
4.1
5.2
6.3
7. How many Goblins have you converted?
8. Who is your leader?
9. Why do you do such things?
10. Critical Success / Extreme Failure
D10=d10(3)=3
[Low-level Captain’s Answer]
1-3. Yes ♛
4-10. No
D10=d10(2)=2
"Then... are there any other members of your group nearby? Has anyone gone ahead?"
After pondering for a moment, the Hero first asked about the information that concerned her most.
"Yes, apart from us, there is [] squad."
D5=d5(5)=5
The Black Gate Captain answered swiftly, causing the Hero’s expression to tighten slightly.
"Our squad was originally assigned to wait here for reinforcements to rendezvous, but probably something went wrong on the road, those fellows never showed up, so we just decided to head straight for the snowy mountains—"
Contrary to the die-hard Fanatics that the Hero had previously encountered, this Black Gate Captain was very aware of how to gauge the situation, without the Hero needing to ask more, he poured out their aims and plans entirely like spilling beans.
Sure enough, their target was to kill the injured White Snake.
And the Black Gate Captain, clearly ignorant of the Hero’s origins and unaware that it was her who intercepted the Goblin reinforcements before, the Hero cross-referenced these pieces of information with the current situation in her mind. The Captain’s narrative matched what she had come to know, confirming the truthfulness of his words.
[Are there Sect followers headed to the snowy mountain? (9+ close to Ice Heaven Lake)]
1-4. No ♛
5-10. Yes
D10=d10(1)=1
Hearing his words, the Hero couldn’t help but feel anxious.
The Black Gate’s power in the Highland was far greater than she had imagined. Nonetheless, what the squad captain said next somewhat eased the tension in her mind.
"Although there are five squads in total, only our squad received the order to chase down the White Snake. The others all have their various tasks, and I am not fully aware of the overall plan.
"And some personnel are positioned near the Forbidden Melting Peak to prevent anyone from invading the volcanic area."
