Chapter 152: D54. Journey_3

"Due to the weather, it will take quite a few days for the Chocobo Cart to reach the Border."

D5+14=d5(4)+14=18

Most Magic Creatures are hibernating, and Hero’s Luck will be tested every three days, with scores above 3 ensuring safety.

Amid the cold wind and flying snow, two large Chocobos pull the carriage, running at a steady pace on the road.

Ordinary people might consider it unwise to travel in such weather, preferring instead to stay warm at home.

However, such thoughts are not exactly incorrect, it’s just that the people of the Kingdom rose from insignificance, built up their civilization, and expanded their city state and power to ultimately forge this nation.

Although prolonged peace has made many people complacent, the incessant dangers and riches in the wild still allure Adventurers.

In some ways, the spirit of adventure already flows in their blood.

Just like how neither the grandfather nor the village chief grandma ever suggested that Hero should give up being a Hero.

They can’t always protect her from the dangers of the world. Rather than deceiving themselves in denial, it’s better to let her confront it head-on.

No matter how harsh the future may be, as long as one has the courage to carve a path through the wilderness’ darkness, they will definitely forge their own life—

That’s the theory at least, but journeying always invites various unforeseen incidents.

The Hero, dozing off, suddenly awakens due to a jolt.

"I feel like I dreamt something peculiar? Or maybe not?"

It might have been merely a pit in the road or rolling over a large boulder, but the carriage’s shaking soon stopped, resuming a smooth progression.

Hero, jolted awake, rubbed her eyes.

Today marks the fourth day of her journey.

The journey these days has been, somewhat unexpectedly, bland.

Spending days amidst unchanged wind and snow on the move, and at night the coachman sets up tents outside, while Hero sleeps inside the carriage, with night watch given to the two Chocobos and Gleaming Scale Serpent.

Perhaps it’s because grandfather is generous, or due to her appearance, or maybe it’s just the coachman’s nature, but he has been quite friendly and has mostly not required Hero to do much.

But conversely, this has also made her feel somewhat bored.

After all, as a professional daring to drive to the Border in winter, although the coachman is amiable, he still adheres to professional ethics, treating Hero with the respect due to a distinguished guest.

Moreover, Hero is now unable to talk, so there’s not much interaction between them.

[Bored Hero chooses—]

1. Study♛

2. Continue sleeping

D2=d2(1)=1

On the way, there’s nothing much to do in the carriage.

Remembering the teachings of Grandpa and the village chief grandma, the Hero, who knows not to slack off in studies, woke up from a nap and chose to take out books from her luggage and began to study.

[What is the Hero reading?]

1. "Little Ghost Slayer Biography" (?)

5. "Human Soul and Beast Spirit"

"Border Folklore"

A book that delves into the history, culture, geographical environment, and ancient legends of the border regions, themed around folklore.

The book is quite substantial, more than enough to pass the time, and the cover is slightly faded, with some curled edges on the pages. Opening it at random, one can see markings and notes beside the paragraphs.

’These are the places Grandpa wanted to visit but never did...’

Even without knowing Grandpa’s past, one can see how much love he had poured into this book and how much he yearned to see the landscapes recorded in it.

Recalling the slightly sentimental yet relieved way Grandpa handed the book to her, the Hero earnestly started flipping through it page by page.

Although it’s just about seeking information about the Little Girl, this knowledge might not be useful, but it at least helps her to understand more about the Border.

Books only become precious when they are needed; only by accumulating knowledge regularly can it be handy at crucial moments, Grandpa used to say.

Moreover, even though Grandpa never asked her for anything, she still wanted to see the things that the old man once wanted to see.

Thus, the Chocobo Cart carrying the Hero headed towards the southeastern Borders...

The Chocobo has been running for a full six days.

The Hero couldn’t speak out loud, relying on a notebook for communication was ultimately not convenient, and the coachman also adhered to principles, not bothering the distinguished guest too much.

The journey continued somberly for six days.

But with the coachman looking after two big birds and dealing with many chores while the Hero concentrated on her books, the two spent their time without any issues.

’Traveling is more boring than I imagined.’

After closing the book, the Hero let out a yawn, and the Gleaming Scale Serpent at her feet was already sound asleep.

Though she wouldn’t really call this traveling, it was more like just making haste on the road.

At first, she was interested in opening the window to watch the changing scenery outside and the drifting snow, but as they continued, the landscapes seemed almost the same.

Forest, wasteland, forest, wasteland, occasional snowfall, and the incessantly howling cold wind.

Even the roadside stations were barely seen along with other bird carriages, as lonely as the temperature.

And the dangers she was cautious about before setting off didn’t occur at all.

After all, even if the wilderness is fraught with peril, the road to the Border is paved by the Kingdom,

The road is humankind’s territory, a notion that is already ingrained in the instincts of most Magic Creatures through bloody battles.

Unless truly desperate with hunger, ordinary Magic Creatures wouldn’t dare attack a Chocobo running on the road.

And a typical coachman running on the roads all his life probably never encounters a Fantasy Level Magic Creature like the Hero did before leaving.

Wondering where Sister White Snake is now and what she’s doing, just hoping she doesn’t clash with humans.

Gently rubbing the faded cover of the book, the Hero’s eyelids slowly began to grow heavy.

Even after looking at it for several days, with such a vast Border, just one book can only offer a glimpse into a much larger picture.

Maybe it’s time for a rest...

1-3. Delayed by a day due to a snowstorm

4. A Magic Creature blocking the road

5. Someone hitting on her at the station
