Chapter 718: Old Master Leng
Chapter 718: Chapter 718: Old Master Leng
A strange calm settled over her. But as quickly as it came, she brushed it aside, replacing it with a bright smile.
She turned in his arms, looking up at him. "Of course, I do."
Yet, even as she spoke, a fleeting trace of sadness flashed in her eyes.
Leng Huan searched her expression, his brows knitting together as if he had caught something amiss.
But before he could say anything, Old Master Leng cleared his throat pointedly.
Leng Huan released her with a chuckle and took a seat beside her.
"How is your shooting going?" Old Master Leng asked, taking her hand in his aged but firm grip.
Yu Mei stiffened for a split second before forcing herself to relax.
She hadn’t been filming anything at all—her days had been spent trying to please Grandma Cai.
Yet, she smiled and replied smoothly,
"It’s going well, Grandpa Leng. The director has been very pleased with my performance."
He nodded approvingly, and the conversation flowed easily from there.
They spoke about trivial matters until Yu Mei finally brought up her reason for visiting.
"Huan," she began hesitantly, "I actually came because I need your help."
Leng Huan’s lips curved into a small smile. "You know I’d do anything for you."
Yu Mei stood, and Leng Huan followed suit. "Let’s talk in your study," he said, leading her inside.
As they ascended the stairs, Yu Mei misstepped on the last step.
She gasped, her balance tilting. In an instant, strong hands caught her waist, steadying her.
"Be careful," Leng Huan murmured, his voice laced with concern.
Yu Mei nodded, but for the first time, she realized just how gentle he was with her. The realization unsettled her.
As he guided her into his study, he suddenly leaned in, his eyes locking onto hers. Time seemed to slow.
Yu Mei hesitated, her breath catching. And then, without thinking, she closed her eyes.
Soft lips met hers in a lingering kiss.
Just as Leng Huan was about to deepen it, panic seized Yu Mei. She remembered. She hadn’t gone through hymen reconstruction surgery.
She pulled back abruptly, placing a hand on his chest. "Huan, we... we should wait. Until marriage."
Leng Huan’s eyes darkened for a fraction of a second, but he quickly masked it with a soft smile.
"Of course," he said, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face. "I’ll wait for you."
Yu Mei exhaled in relief. She had successfully avoided a disaster.
Clearing his throat, Leng Huan walked over to his desk and retrieved a folder. "Actually, there’s something important I wanted your opinion on."
Yu Mei’s heart skipped a beat.
Was this it?
Was he finally going to ask about an engagement ring? A flicker of anticipation—and annoyance—arose in her.
But when Leng Huan opened the folder, all she saw was a stack of legal documents.
A land agreement deed.
Yu Mei’s face fell.
"This project," Leng Huan began, "is a high-risk investment, but it has significant potential for long-term gains. What do you think?"
Yu Mei barely heard him.
Disappointment flooded her.
This was exactly why she didn’t like Leng Huan.
He needed her opinions, her approval.
He wasn’t like Qiao Jun, who made decisive choices without hesitation.
She forced a smile, taking the papers from him. "I’ll have a look."
Leng Huan beamed, mistaking her reluctance for interest. "I knew I could count on you."
Yu Mei lowered her gaze, hiding the cold calculation in her eyes. This was precisely why she couldn’t settle for Leng Huan.
"Oh, right, you needed help from me, right? What do you want?" Leng Huan asked.
Yu Mei bit her lips, lowering her eyes as if she was struggling to find the right words. Then, with a shaky voice, she said,
"Huan, I... I need your help with something."
Leng Huan immediately leaned forward, concern flashing across his face.
"What is it, Mei? You know I’d do anything for you."
Yu Mei sighed and looked away as if gathering her thoughts.
"It’s about Yu Sile. He... he’s been sending me death threats. I’m scared, Huan. I don’t know what to do."
Leng Huan’s expression darkened instantly.
His usual gentle demeanor was replaced by a stormy intensity.
"What? He dared to threaten you?" His hands clenched into fists.
"I won’t let him get away with this. I’ll find someone to teach her a lesson."
Yu Mei quickly shook her head, placing a delicate hand on his arm.
"No, Huan. I don’t want you to do something rash. It’ll only make things worse."
He took a deep breath, clearly restraining himself.
"Then what do you want me to do? Tell me, and I’ll make it happen."
Yu Mei hesitated for a moment before looking up at him with pleading eyes.
"Would it be okay if you could allot me some men? I’ll instruct them myself. That way, I can make sure things don’t get out of hand."
Leng Huan studied her for a long moment before nodding.
"Alright. Whatever you need, it’s yours. Just promise me you’ll stay safe."
Yu Mei’s lips curved into a soft smile.
"Thank you, Huan. You’re always so good to me."
Just as Leng Huan was about to say something more, Yu Mei’s phone rang.
She glanced at the screen, and her eyes flickered when she saw the name.
Grandma Cai.
Quickly, she moved away from Leng Huan.
"Huan, this is an important call. I have to take it."
Leng Huan nodded, though there was a flicker of something unreadable in his eyes. "Go ahead."
Yu Mei stepped outside the study, pressing the phone to her ear. "Grandmother Cai, hello."
"Yu Mei, have you reached home?" Grandma Cai’s voice came through, steady but firm.
Yu Mei’s lips trembled as she infused her voice with emotion.
"Yes, I have. Grandmother Cai, I... I don’t think I can marry Qiao Du."
"Oh?" Grandma Cai sighed, a hint of disappointment in her tone. "Why not?"
Yu Mei swallowed.
"He... he behaved inappropriately. I was very uncomfortable. I don’t think I can go through with it."
There was silence on the other end before Grandma Cai let out another sigh.
"Then it seems you were not meant to be."
Yu Mei secretly rolled her eyes but softened her voice.
"I’m so sorry, Grandmother."
"It’s alright, child. Will you come to the temple tomorrow?" Grandma Cai asked.
Yu Mei inwardly cursed.
Even after everything, this old woman was still thinking about the temple instead of how upset she was. But she forced a gentle tone.
"Yes, Grandmother. I’ll be there."
There was a pause before Grandma Cai spoke again.
"Actually, I still have another grandson whom I wanted to introduce to you."
Yu Mei’s heart skipped a beat. This time, she wouldn’t fall into the same trap.
"Grandmother, may I ask... what is his name?"
A small chuckle came from the other end. "Qiao Jun."
Excitement surged through Yu Mei like a firework exploding in the night sky. "Grandmother! I would be honored to meet him."
Grandma Cai seemed pleased. "Good. Five days from now, meet me at the Four Seasons Hotel."
Yu Mei grinned widely. "I will be there."
After hanging up, Yu Mei felt as if she was floating.
This was her chance. As long as she impressed Qiao Jun and gained Grandma Cai’s support, she could become his wife.
Meanwhile, inside the study, Leng Huan sat in his chair, his expression dark. He had been silent for a long time, staring at his phone.
The soft smile he had worn earlier had disappeared, replaced by something much colder.
Suddenly, his phone rang. He picked it up, his voice calm. "Speak."
"Sir, we have news," a subordinate’s voice came through.
"Miss Yu Mei went to meet Cai Bao’s grandson this morning. The meeting went not so good and she had tears in her eyes by the time she came out. And just now, she made plans to meet Qiao Jun in five days."
Leng Huan closed his eyes. His chest burned, but he forced himself to remain composed.
"I see. Continue keeping an eye on her. I want to know everything."
"Understood, sir."
Once the call ended, Leng Huan remained seated, his hands tightening into fists.
He had known, deep down, that Yu Mei wasn’t going to the temple for religious devotion.
But now, hearing the truth, the betrayal cut deeper than he had expected.
She was supposed to be his.
His heart ached, but soon that pain twisted into something darker. His jaw clenched, and his fingers dug into his palm.
"Qiao Jun..." he muttered, his voice carrying a dangerous edge. "You seduced her."
Rage and resentment bubbled within him, consuming his thoughts.
He had loved Yu Mei for so long, had given her everything.
Yet, she was chasing after another man simply because of wealth and power.
His eyes glowed with cold determination. If Qiao Jun wanted to take Yu Mei from him, then he would make sure Qiao Jun paid the price.
