Chapter 84: Nexian’s Domain
Chapter 84: Nexian’s Domain
"Right, I’m done for the day," Matthew said as he handed Dr. Muni the stack of papers. As always, the man didn’t look pleased, he barely looked up. What a villain, Matthew thought.
"One hour isn’t done yet. You still have seven minutes," Dr. Muni replied, motioning toward the remaining documents.
Matthew rolled his eyes and said nothing. He placed the papers on the desk and reached for another batch. Just as his fingers brushed the edge of the stack, Dr. Muni grabbed his wrist.
Matthew frowned. He tried to pull back, but the old man’s grip didn’t loosen.
"What are you doing?" Matthew asked.
The ghost girl floated closer, her brows drawn. "Something’s weird about him. How is he so strong? Isn’t he just an old man?" she hovered around Dr. Muni. "However, he doesn’t smell like a Nexian at all. Actually... I can’t sense anything from him at all. He should be completely normal, right?"
Matthew stilled. Why is the ghost asking her about this? The Dr. Muni that he knew from his past life was just as secretive as the one in this life. However, at least he never treated Lenox like some calculator.
He forced himself to stay calm. What could an old man possibly do to him? "Dr. Muni, What are you doing?" he asked more firmly.
Dr. Muni didn’t answer. He released Matthew’s wrist and returned to his notes. "Finish what you can and come back tomorrow."
Matthew narrowed his eyes but didn’t press further. He grabbed the next stack and got to work.
Time dragged. The equations weren’t complicated, but there were a lot of them. He worked in silence, glancing at the clock only twice. When he finally reached the bottom of the pile, he straightened and stepped away from the desk.
"I’m leaving now," he said.
Dr. Muni didn’t look up or acknowledge the statement.
Matthew was already at the door when the old man finally spoke.
"Prepare your passport."
Matthew stopped. "What?"
Dr. Muni still didn’t look up. "There’s a project after the school year ends. I’m taking you out of the country. It will benefit your college applications."
College applications.
Matthew stared at the back of the man’s head.
He gave a short nod and left the room.
"What a weird man," Matthew mumbled. "You sure he’s human?" he asked the ghost girl.
"I am," the ghost girl said. "However... the man earlier..."
Matthew looked around but didn’t find that man again. This time, he stopped at the photo and looked at Jerome’s smiling face. Sadly for him, the memories didn’t resurface, so he still didn’t know who killed Jerome.
Still, the ghost girl’s comment lingered inside his head. A Nexian near the memorial board? This was the first time she had ever pointed one out. Matthew sighed.
He didn’t want to think too much about this. Involving himself further would only complicate things. Jerome’s case, whatever it was, wasn’t any of his business. Matthew didn’t want to get involved. He didn’t need more trouble.
And yet, the appearance of a Nexian—here of all places—was hard to ignore. He thought about Argent, that woman, Duke, and Young Master Tian.
Another sigh escaped him. He turned and headed for the parking area.
It was already late. After changing clothes, Matthew left campus and made his way to the black market.
"I have been thinking about that ghost..." the ghost girl spoke as Matthew drove toward the bank that served as his entrance to the black market.
"What about it?" Matthew asked. Since he wanted to visit the black market today, he had already asked Ottep to go home first.
"Well... where is he?" the ghost girl said.
"What do you mean?" Matthew asked, feigning ignorance. He had accidentally absorbed Jerome when that ghost attacked him, but the ghost girl didn’t know this.
"Ghosts don’t just disappear," she said. "What do you think happened?"
"What does that mean?" Matthew asked though he didn’t give her a lot of time to ponder. "And how would you know so much about ghosts?"
Currently, the ghost girl doesn’t know he can absorb ghosts, and he wants to keep it that way.
"I—I just remembered," she answered.
Matthew said nothing. At this point, he didn’t know if the ghost was pretending to have amnesia or simply messing with him. "Well, what else do you know about them? Don’t they eventually disappear?" he asked.
"Not really... no. I mean, I’m not an expert, but I know they don’t just vanish, especially not the ones with grievances. Most want revenge, until then, they won’t disappear."
"Tell me more..." Matthew said.
"Well, I know the ones who linger without any consciousness are called Echoes, and souls like Jerome are... Bound Souls. I don’t remember much, but I know they don’t just disappear. They usually stay until..."
"Until what?" Matthew asked.
Before the ghost could respond, Matthew slammed on the brakes. The car jerked to a stop, his hand tightening on the wheel.
In front of him, scattered across the street, were ghosts. Not one or two, but dozens—maybe more. They just stood there, still, watching something in the distance.
The ghost girl leaned forward, eyes wide. "This is bad."
Matthew frowned. "What’s going on?"
She opened her mouth but didn’t answer right away. Instead, she turned her head sharply, as if sensing something.
Before she could speak, a sudden shift washed over the car. The world outside dimmed for a second as if a shadow passed over it. Then everything looked exactly the same—but it wasn’t.
The air changed.
He felt it like being submerged underwater without actually moving. The colors outside lost some saturation; sounds dimmed. The usual city hum was gone.
Matthew frowned. He looked around and realized everything seemed frozen... except them.
"No, no, no," the ghost girl muttered. "We got pulled in. We got pulled in!"
"Pulled into what?" Matthew asked.
"An Isolation Field," she said. "A Nexian’s domain. We need to get out of here!"
"A Nexian... what?"
"Crap! We need to run!"
