Chapter 82: Certified Eavesdropper
"Why the hell would you— damn it! What the hell was that strength, Matthew?" Adam snapped.
"I was surprised," Matthew said with a smirk, eyeing Adam, who was now cradling his hand. "It’s not my fault you’re that weak. And it didn’t break."
He glared at him. "I was calling your name."
Matthew had been too busy talking to the ghost, he hadn’t even noticed Adam’s voice. "Thought you were going to swing at me," he said, smile still in place. "So... what do you want?"
"Follow me," Adam said, turning sharply and heading down the hall. When he realized Matthew wasn’t moving, he stopped and looked over his shoulder. "I said follow me."
"Why would I?" Matthew asked, glancing around. A few students were nearby. "Why can’t we talk here?"
Adam let out a long sigh. "Just follow me, will you?"
"This guy’s definitely up to something sketchy," the ghost muttered. "You should go. Might be fun."
Matthew rolled his eyes but followed, anyway. Adam led him to a quiet corner of the school. One glance was all it took—no cameras, no students. A perfect blind spot.
"What is it?" Matthew asked. "You’re not planning to kill me, are you?"
"You need to help Dean," Adam said, ignoring his question.
"What?"
Adam sighed again. "You need to talk to Principal Wilson. Ask him to let Dean back in."
"And why would I do that?" Matthew asked, raising an eyebrow.
Adam didn’t answer right away. But Matthew had already heard the rumors. Elisa’s family wasn’t staying quiet. Word was her father—someone with deep connections—was already pressuring the mayor of Destin City. The media had picked it up. The school was under fire.
And it wasn’t just Dean. Lenox, Catherine, and everyone who saw the scene were caught in the backlash.
Naturally, Matthew remained untouched. He wasn’t really involved in the matter. He was simply a little drunk because of the alcohol some folks sneaked in and were resting in the other room.
Fortunately for Matthew, Cristoff was very good at managing things behind the scenes.
"I don’t know—because it was you who did it?" Adam asked before he took a step toward Matthew. "Look..." His voice lowered. "Aren’t you just some dog that Lenox is feeding?"
Matthew lifted an eyebrow. What’s the relevance of that sentence? This Adam is weird, he thought.
"You can either let him back in, or... I tell Elisa’s father it was you who set his daughter up."
Matthew smiled in response. "I don’t seem to understand anything."
"Stop playing dumb..." Adam hissed, his eyes narrowed. "People saw you... it was Marc and Dean who took you to the elevator when you were pretending to be drunk. You were there. Despite the lack of videos, I have witnesses," Adam said. He spent the rest of the weekend talking to people. He found a few of them and immediately took them in, promising their safety as long as they told him the truth.
"Once Elisa’s father hears of this—" he added. "He will scorch the earth just to make you suffer."
Matthew pursed his lips.
Elisa wasn’t supposed to be there. She wasn’t part of the setup. At least, not originally.
But she showed up on her own. And she had her phone out when she entered the room. He saw the phone and the way she tried to hide it after realizing what she’d walked in on.
That wasn’t an accident.
She wasn’t just checking on someone. She was trying to document it. That was when Matthew realized she’s working with either Dean or Marc or Adam.
Her goals were unclear, but at least he knew she didn’t come inside the room to pray.
Blackmail? Maybe. Evidence for leverage? That made more sense.
Unfortunately for her, what she captured on camera wasn’t what she expected and things went sideways, fast.
Matthew tilted his head, keeping his tone casual. "So let me get this straight. You’re threatening to frame me for something I didn’t do?"
Adam took a step closer, yet Matthew didn’t move.
"You were there," Adam said.
"I didn’t touch any drugs," Matthew replied. "Didn’t speak to the hotel staff. Didn’t interact with Elisa. And I’m sure that’ll be clear when her father checks everything. So, tell me again—when the dust settles, who do you think he’ll blame?"
Adam’s jaw tightened.
"Let me guess," Matthew continued. "The man who talked to the staff, paid for the room in secret, and bought the drugs from God knows where."
He smiled slightly.
"You think you’re so clever," Adam muttered.
"I think I’m not the one who’s sweating right now."
Adam looked away for a second, then turned back. "Dean needs to be let back in."
Matthew kept his eyes on him. "Or what?" He couldn’t understand why Adam would insist on this. Dean? Really? The two were close, but... why was Adam threatening Matthew over Dean?
This doesn’t make sense at all.
"Or I’ll make sure you regret ever crossing me," Adam said.
Matthew just stared at him.
"Three days," Adam added. "Get him back in, or you’ll see what happens."
He stepped forward and shoved Matthew with both hands, but Matthew didn’t move an inch. The force rebounded instead, and Adam stumbled back a step, catching himself with a glare.
Then he turned and walked away without saying another word.
"He’s talking about Mr. Fitz, right?" the ghost girl said suddenly, floating a bit closer with a thoughtful look. "Why is he so mad? Are they secret lovers?"
Matthew blinked. That was not where he thought this was going. He turned to her.
"What?" she said, shrugging. "He wants you to beg the principal to lift Fitz’s suspension. Sounds like a dramatic breakup to me. Did Mr. Fitz threaten to break it off or reveal their relationship?"
Matthew turned sharply. "How do you even know about that?"
"I was checking," the ghost said, clearly proud of herself. "And I overheard some of the other students gossiping. They are surprisingly chatty after what happened over the weekend."
Matthew raised an eyebrow. So not only was she amnesiac, she was also a certified eavesdropper with a flair for nonsense.
"No," Matthew said, shaking his head. Adam wasn’t into guys—at least, not in his past life. Dean? That didn’t seem right either. "That’s not it."
Then what was the real reason? Dean’s suspension was only temporary. A few weeks, maybe less. The exams were already over, and classes weren’t in full swing yet. If Dean cared that much, he could hire private tutors and catch up on his own.
So why the rush? Why push this hard just to get Dean back?
There was more to it, something Adam was keeping to himself.
Matthew glanced in the direction Adam had gone. What was it? What was so important about coming back now? What exactly was Dean trying to do?
