Chapter 71: Selfish Bastard
"I heard there’s a truck parked outside..." Christian said. "It’s the latest Wyvern GX9. And Mr. Keller drove it here."
"Mr. Keller was known because of his father’s company," May explained as he eyed Lenox. "I believe it was when he received an award for one of being the most promising businessmen like young businessmen or something. He was even featured in a magazine back then."
"It was because of his software," John said. "He had something patented, used it to start his company with his father, and received an award and since he went to Lindberg University in the past, the school received some recognition as well."
Lenox nodded. His gaze landed on the car outside.
"Yeah, he is rich... wealthy," Christian said. "That one right there costs a million easy."
A few others in the room followed, craning their necks toward the hotel’s front drive.
"Is he here to join the gala?" Elisa asked. "Was he some special speaker or something?"
"Apparently, the school invited a few prominent people," someone said from the doorway. "That should include Mr. Keller. But I heard the car is not even his."
Heads turned.
"What do you mean?" John asked.
The guy shrugged. "The valet said Frank Keller drove it in. He parked it and told them it wasn’t for him. Said it’s a gift for Mr. Lindberg."
Everyone froze.
"Lenox?" Christian asked, turning around. "That can’t be right." He turned to Lenox. "I didn’t know you’re close with Mr. Keller."
May immediately raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure he said ’Lindberg’?"
"That’s what I heard. We arrived almost at the same time, and I was outside when he parked the car." The guy nodded. "He said, ’Give the keys to Mr. Lindberg when he arrives.’"
"Lenox! Is that your car?"
Lenox blinked, caught off guard. "I– I don’t– No it’s not."
"But they said Mr. Keller brought it and told the valet it’s for Mr. Lindberg."
Catherine glanced at him. "Did Frank Keller give you a car?"
"Well, if you think about it, I heard Mr. Keller just arrived last week. And considering he’s from one of the wealthiest families in Destin City, you must know him, right? Maybe that was his gift? I heard he owns a car dealership, so giving away a car shouldn’t be a big deal, right?" someone from the back said.
Lenox frowned, but stayed quiet.
Of course, he’d heard of the Keller family and he knew who Frank Keller was. He was the son of Brad Keller, a major real estate tycoon. But he had never interacted with Frank personally.
And realistically, as someone who wasn’t even the true heir of the Lindberg family, he doubted Frank even knew who he was.
Which meant there was only one explanation.
Matthew.
Lenox glanced at the pearl-white Wyvern GX9 parked at the curb. It was impossible to miss. Sleek body, flawless paint, polished rims, all of it gleaming under the hotel lights.
Brand new. No doubt about it.
However, Matthew never liked cars or had any interest in owning something like this.
He looked at the truck again. It didn’t feel right, but... what if? Could it be a gift? Maybe some sort of peace offering? A goodbye gift?
Tomorrow was the day Lenox officially moved out of the mansion.
Was this his way of saying goodbye?
Lenox stood there, the thought circling in his head. Despite everything, despite how cold Matthew had been lately. The fact that he had once saved Matthew remains. Maybe this was his way of acknowledging that?
But still... it didn’t sit right.
"You should just get the keys so we can drive it later," May said.
Lenox quickly shook his head. "No. Let’s go to the venue first. We’ll deal with this later."
Catherine glanced at him, but he didn’t say anything more. He turned away from the truck and motioned for the others to follow.
Then the crowd stirred.
A black limousine pulled up to the curb. The valet stepped back as it came to a stop. The car didn’t belong to any student. This wasn’t a ride someone casually rented.
The front seat door opened.
"Huh? Isn’t that... Dean?" someone from the crowd said. " Dean Fitz, right?"
"Huh? What’s going on? That’s Marc Tallon!" someone said when they spotted Marc too.
The two walked around to the side door and stood there.
Then Marc rolled-up red carpet.
He bent down and rolled it across the pavement, stretching it from the car door all the way to the hotel’s front entrance. Students near the lobby craned their necks to see. Cameras came out. The red carpet was velvet, not cheap fabric. Even the hotel staff looked confused.
The rear door opened then Matthew stepped out. Smiling bashfully as if he wasn’t expecting that kind of treatment. He said something that made both Dean and Marc frowned but the two of them said nothing in response.
He wore an all-white suit, tailored perfectly. A sleek watch sat on his left wrist. His hair was slicked back. At first, he looked surprised then he walked the red carpet like it was nothing.
He didn’t glance at the others as he walked straight toward the hotel doors, hands at his sides, eyes fixed ahead. Then an attendant bowed to him and handed him what looked like a box that clearly had the logo of the car!
"Wait isn’t that– " May started.
"Why is the attendant giving him the keys?"
"Did they get the wrong Mr. Lindberg?"
"Hold on... Can you see the driver? It’s Adam! Adam’s driving the Limo! What’s going on?"
Lenox stood frozen. How could they not know Adam? This man was a well-known bully in the school!
Catherine turned toward the limousine, then back at Lenox. "I think they got the wrong Mr. Lindberg." Seeing Matthew being treated like a Prince only made her more irritated. What a shameless bastard! She thought inwardly.
Lenox didn’t respond as Matthew nodded at the attendant and took the keys. Then he turned toward the car, and saw them all standing there, but didn’t even acknowledge their presence. He started walking toward the venue.
"Hey!" May stepped forward, raising her voice. "Hey, that car belongs to Lenox. Give the keys back!"
