Chapter 1353: Chapter 30: Guide to Roaming
The blue stardust floating in the wind vanishes in an instant, as if it never existed in this world.
But the black top hat and woolen coat that flutter down with it testify that the tall man was just standing here, disappearing into thin air.
"Douglas..."
Einstein’s mind still reflects the black shadow of the hand on the moon. He steps forward, walking to the spot where Douglas just disappeared, and picks up the black top hat that had fallen to the ground.
Touching the inside with the back of his hand, he can still faintly feel the warmth that hasn’t yet left.
He stands, momentarily bewildered on the spot.
As a physicist, he completely doesn’t understand how Douglas disappeared;
but what he understands even less is—
Why did Douglas leave so decisively?
Without even saying goodbye.
Just waved his hand and left, catching him off guard.
"Why?"
Einstein feels the sorrow rise within him once more.
He can’t figure it out.
Why did Douglas suddenly appear in his life, give him hope, empower him, and yet in the end... ruthlessly abandon him to face it all alone.
"Since Douglas’s eyes are the same crystal blue as mine, then he should, like me, be able to see the future and also, like me, be immortal."
"Moreover, he can disappear into the world at will, something I can’t do, which means Douglas’s abilities far surpass my own... It seems that he possesses a much deeper understanding of time, space, and this mysterious power than I do."
"But... even so... Douglas, why do you still want to leave me? Clearly, if we worked together, we could give this world a better, more perfect future."
He puts on the black top hat that Douglas left behind.
Then.
He lowers his head to look at the white rectangular gift box in his hand.
This was the last thing Douglas left for him, instructing him to take good care of it.
Without opening it, Einstein already knows what’s inside.
But.
Long-formed habits still make him lift the box’s lid and look inside with his eyes...
A silver watch.
Not very high-end, even somewhat crude, not a famous brand.
The second hand on the dial ticks away, telling the passage of time and the irretrievable past.
Below the watch, pressed under it, is a small folded paper slip.
Out of respect for Douglas’s privacy, Einstein doesn’t take out or open the slip; but... it doesn’t make a difference, as he already knows what’s written on it.
It’s a line of delicate English, likely penned by a lady.
But Einstein doesn’t know who wrote it.
He awoke on the afternoon of November 5th, able to see any moment in the future after that, but unable to know any history before it.
He gently closes the white gift box and lets out a sigh.
He still misses Douglas very much.
For others, the word ’goodbye’ is a blessing and a hope, suggesting that they will meet again.
But for him and Douglas...
Goodbye.
Means.
Never seeing each other again.
The moment Douglas said he was leaving, Einstein frantically searched for Douglas’s whereabouts on the temporal line in his mind.
Whether past or future, or even trajectory.
But.
He found nothing.
He does not know Douglas’s past, nor can he see Douglas’s future; the other person waved goodbye, leaving only a silhouette and a request. From then on, vanishing forever in time and space.
In the future Einstein can see, there is no longer any trace of Douglas.
So...
He doesn’t believe that Douglas will come to find him again.
"Douglas, did you deceive me?"
Einstein looks at the white rectangular gift box in his hand:
"[You, or the future I see... One of them is deceiving me.]"
"But, I still believe you, my good friend."
Einstein carefully puts away the small gift box, placing it in his coat pocket.
Since Douglas had said he would come to find him one day to reclaim this watch, he decided to patiently wait.
After all, he is ageless and immortal, he has all the time in the world, he has already told Douglas... he will be waiting for him in the underground bunker of this farm.
"But, how long do you want me to wait?"
Einstein raises his head, looking at the full moon crawling up into the night sky:
"What kind of miracle are you waiting for?"
He can see everything in the world, the future of every corner.
Yet he cannot decipher Douglas’s thoughts at all.
Suddenly.
A young man’s exclamation comes from behind:
"Oh! My God! Einstein! It’s truly Sir Einstein! I never thought I’d encounter you in such a remote place!"
Einstein turns his head.
He sees a blond-haired, blue-eyed young man leap off his bicycle and rush swiftly in his direction.
The young man is so excited, he cares little that his bicycle fell, and directly rushed to Einstein, bowing respectfully:
"Sir Einstein! What an honor it is to see you here! I... I feel incredibly honored! I, I admire you so much! I grew up reading your stories, I admire you so much!"
The young man is slender, with a prominently hooked nose, too excited to speak coherently:
"My name is Christopher Adams, I’m from England and studying here, I’m on my way to catch a ship at the pier... I truly never expected to meet you here!"
Einstein shakes his head:
