Chapter 93: Restricted Area 86_2
For instance, if it’s marked with a ’Second Level’, that represents that the most powerful mutant beast within that restricted area is of the second level.
Of course, this map is only for reference."
Fang Zhixing understood and pondered, "What if someone in a second-level restricted area runs into a third-level mutant beast by accident?"
Ding Zhigang chuckled, "Then the map must be updated. So, if you really plan to venture into a restricted area, it’s best to purchase the latest version of the map, which tends to be more accurate."
Fang Zhixing found this to be reasonable.
Afterward, he stood up, holding his cup of wine, and walked over to the table where the three burly men sat.
The three burly men sized up Fang Zhixing carefully, and when they saw the two badges at his waist, their expressions changed dramatically, and they became reserved.
Fang Zhixing smiled, "Don’t be nervous, I want to ask you fellows about something."
The three exchanged glances, and one of the burly men immediately stood up, bowing and nodding, "Sir, please take a seat."
Fang Zhixing sat down, spread the map out on the table, and directly asked, "May I ask which of these five restricted areas you brothers have visited?"
The burly man replied, "Sir, we three brothers are all Martial Artists of the Power Transmission Realm, we only dare to venture into first-level restricted areas."
He pointed twice on the map, "We’ve been to these two areas."
Fang Zhixing nodded, then continued, "If I want to enter a restricted area, do you know if there’s anything in particular I should pay close attention to?"
When this topic arose, the burly man had more to say, "There are far too many things to be mindful of. For instance, remember never to traverse a restricted area alone; it’s best to find several others to accompany you and make sure at least one of them knows medical skills for treatment."
At the very least, you should be well-stocked with detoxification kits, insect repellent powder, and quick-acting golden sore medicine.
Another example, the plants and creatures within the restricted areas are extremely bizarre and anomalous. Before you can identify what those things actually are, never touch them casually, let alone eat them.
Moreover, the environments inside the restricted areas are immensely complicated, making it very easy to get lost. That’s the most terrifying part.
I remember one time, shortly after we entered a restricted area, a heavy fog suddenly descended. Once the fog lifted, we were lost, unable to tell north from south, and nearly got trapped to death.
Luckily, we happened to come across another hunting team who kindly led us out, or else we would have been long gone."
Talking about that experience, the faces of the three burly men were filled with sighs of relief and lingering fear.
Fang Zhixing understood, and he asked for the names of some of the medicines they commonly carried and found effective, noting them down.
Lastly, he inquired, "Under normal circumstances, how is the price of a mutant beast determined?"
The burly man answered, "The price of an ordinary first-level mutant beast varies from a thousand to thirty thousand. The price of a common second-level mutant beast is usually two, three, or even four times higher.
Of course, the selling price of a mutant beast primarily depends on its practical value and rarity.
For some extremely rare first-level mutant beasts, the price is often higher than a common second-level one."
Fang Zhixing quickly grasped the concept.
About ten minutes later, the madam of the house came downstairs, her face full of apologies, spreading her hands, "Sorry, gentlemen, there has been an unexpected situation. Su Niang has suddenly begun her menses and is inconvenient for meeting guests tonight."
"Ah, what, you’re slandering!"
Fang Zhixing merely smiled, nonchalant about it.
However, Ding Zhigang, who had his heart set on a freebie, was distressed, cursing his bad luck.
Lost a fortune in gambling and now this misfortune while seeking pleasure.
In the end, he furiously selected two girls, embracing one on each arm and entered the room.
Fang Zhixing smirked, took the hand of the girl with freckles, and strutted into the room, closing the door behind them.
This time, Xigou did not make a fuss, although his dog face was full of grudges and discontent, gnawing non-stop at the guardrail.
Sometime later, Ding Zhigang rushed out of the room, frantic, and bought a bottle of potency-boosting liquor, gulped it down, and then returned to his room.
The night passed quickly.
The next morning, Fang Zhixing got out of bed, stretched, looking contented, and pushed the door open.
Xigou was lying at the door, sound asleep.
The railing beside him had a row gnawed off.
Fang Zhixing kicked him awake.
Xigou half-dazedly opened his eyes, yawned, and followed Fang Zhixing downstairs, woofing, "Are we leaving just like that, not waiting for Ding Zhigang to come back?"
Fang Zhixing replied, "We will head to the Iron Casting Hall first to look up some information and buy a new map to prepare."
Xigou perked up, happily exclaiming, "Are we really going to the restricted area?"
Fang Zhixing nodded, "The rebels have laid low for now, not daring to make any big moves. We should seize this opportunity to gather supplies quickly."
Xigou thought that made sense.
The two left the Hanxiang Building, had a quick breakfast at a food stall outside, then rode to the Iron Casting Hall.
"Incense Master Fang, you have arrived!"
The gatekeeper at the Iron Casting Hall immediately saluted and allowed Fang Zhixing in upon seeing him.
Fang Zhixing entered smoothly, not lingering, and went straight to the main hall on the first level of Xuanwu Pavilion.
The duty officer was a young man with thick eyebrows.
Last time Fang Zhixing visited, it was also this person who received him; they had met each other before.
"Incense Master Fang, are you here to check on cultivation techniques or to look at something else?"
The young man with thick eyebrows appeared somewhat shy, a bit socially awkward, as he greeted with a flushed face.
Fang Zhixing inquired, "Do you have any materials that introduce the Restricted Area?"
"Yes, I’ll take you there!"
The young man with thick eyebrows gestured politely and led Fang Zhixing to the fourth and fifth rows in the back area.
"The majority of books and scrolls on these two rows of bookshelves are closely related to the Restricted Area."
The young man with thick eyebrows moved as if he knew the area well.
Fang Zhixing nodded and said, "Okay, I’ll look through them on my own, you can go back to your duties."
The young man with thick eyebrows promptly excused himself.
Fang Zhixing approached the bookshelves and swept his eyes back and forth, then reached out and took down a copy of the "Exotic Beast Record."
As the name suggests, this book primarily introduces mutant beasts.
"A common characteristic of mutant beasts is that they are larger, more ferocious, and more venomous than wild animals."
Fang Zhixing quickly glanced over the introduction before flipping to the first page.
"Fire Erosion Ant: A First Level mutant beast, social, about two to three times larger than ordinary ants, with a reddish color and black spots on their foreheads."
"Fire Erosion Ants are omnivorous mutant beasts, mostly active on the surface or underground, with a minority having red wings capable of flight."
"Fire Erosion Ants are poisonous; once bitten, the wound quickly swells, becomes unbearably itchy, and ordinary medicine has difficulty suppressing it, leaving only endurance as an option."
"While individual Fire Erosion Ants are considered First Level mutant beasts, due to their large numbers, their danger level is often regarded as Second Level."
"As a preventative measure, if one encounters a swarm of Fire Erosion Ants, the best course of action is to jump into a river."
The first page was quickly finished.
"It’s a pity, there are only descriptions, no illustrations."
Fang Zhixing had never seen Fire Erosion Ants and could only imagine what they looked like.
Page two: Human-faced Moth
Page three: Blood-Dripping Spider
Page four: Soul-sucking Leech
...
There’s a diverse variety of mutant beasts, with all kinds of strange and indescribable forms.
"Why does it feel more and more like, a Frankenstein’s monster?!"
An odd feeling surfaced in Fang Zhixing’s mind.
For example, a "Flying White Ape", a Second Level mutant beast with the outline of an ape, wings of a bird, and horns of a cow.
In short, it had a bit of a ’Classic of Mountains and Seas’ vibe.
The more Fang Zhixing read, the deeper he frowned, and gradually, his brows furrowed heavily like mountain peaks.
Xigou, out of curiosity, asked, "What did you find? You have a look as if you are holding back urine."
Fang Zhixing responded, "Don’t you find it odd? Mutant beasts are so grotesque and ferocious, devouring humans as though it’s nothing, yet their activity range is confined within the Restricted Area."
Xigou blinked and said, "What’s so strange about that? Didn’t Ding Zhigang say that mutant beasts have a territorial consciousness and won’t run around aimlessly?"
Fang Zhixing shook his head and said, "I just feel like things aren’t that simple. You’re a mutant beast too; would you only stay in one place?"
Xigou countered, "What do you mean, are you suggesting that mutant beasts are controlled by some mysterious force within the Restricted Area?"
Fang Zhixing pondered for a moment and then swiftly perused more materials, one after another.
"Just as I thought!"
After a while, Fang Zhixing’s expression shifted through various shades of contemplation.
None of the materials recorded how the Restricted Area was formed.
The Restricted Area seemed to have existed there since the beginning of heaven and earth, separate from the outside world.
It appeared as though the mutant beasts had always been active within the Restricted Area, rarely venturing out to disturb the outside world.
Both sides kept to themselves.
This was very odd!
Mutant beasts are clearly man-eaters!
"The more I look, the more it seems like, domestication!!"
An audacious guess involuntarily surfaced in Fang Zhixing’s mind.
