Chapter 370 - 220 Great Inversion

Chapter 370: 220 Great Inversion

In the setting sun, a man and a dog climbed over mountains and finally reached the top of one.

"Look, there’s a village over there."

Xigou suddenly barked.

At the foot of the mountain, wisps of cooking smoke rose, revealing a dozen inconspicuous straw-thatched huts amidst the encircling woods.

Fang Zhixing responded, "Let’s stay in this village tonight."

Qingfeng County had suffered terribly from war. The county and its surrounding towns had almost all been devastated by several rounds of war, leaving them in ruins, with nearly every house empty.

Fang Zhixing and Xigou had been running for a day, but this was the first inhabited village they had come across.

The two descended the mountain.

Xigou stopped in the forest while Fang Zhixing walked into the village on his own.

Upon looking around, the village had only a few old women and women, each as thin as a rail from hunger.

Not a single man was in sight.

They were cooking food, not grains but wild vegetables foraged from the mountains.

Fang Zhixing observed from behind a tree for a while before he came out.

The women of the village showed terror upon seeing a man.

Young girls and women quickly hid themselves.

An old grandma, leaning on a cane, came forward, her expression filled with wariness, and asked, "Who are you, and what brings you here?"

Fang Zhixing immediately revealed a friendly smile and replied, "Grandma, I’m just passing through with no ill intentions, just looking for a place to spend the night."

The old grandma scrutinized Fang Zhixing, thought for a moment, then turned and pointed to a thatched cottage down the slope, "No one lives in that house, you can make do for the night."

"Thank you."

Fang Zhixing did not ask any more questions and turned away, quickly entering the enclosed courtyard.

The inside of the house was covered in dust, and aside from a bed, it had nothing else.

Shortly, the old grandma came with a yellowed quilt, somewhat dirty.

She sighed heavily, lamenting, "The war broke out the year before last, our village was raided, all the men died, leaving only us women."

Fang Zhixing understood and immediately took out some Big Coin and stuffed them into the grandma’s hands, smiling, "Use this money to buy some food."

However, the grandma shook her head, declining, "Money is useless, where is there any food to buy for us?"

Fang Zhixing couldn’t help but fall silent.

He had lived in the county for half a year, mingling in the extravagant circle of aristocrats, and had long forgotten that outside lived a world ravaged by war.

The days for the common people at the bottom were truly too bitter.

In the eyes of the top elites, it was as if the common people didn’t exist at all.

Though that was the case, Fang Zhixing merely sighed momentarily, his expression quickly returning to its usual indifference.

From the beginning to the end, he had no intention of helping the grandma or the others.

After dark, Xigou quietly sneaked into the house, carrying a fat wild rabbit in its mouth.

Fang Zhixing smiled slightly, invigorated, "It’s been a long time since I’ve had barbecue, let me show you my cooking skills today."

Xigou obediently lay on the ground, silent.

Soon, the aroma of the grilled rabbit meat filled the air.

The women of the village smelled it, each poking their heads out, continuously swallowing their saliva.

A moment later, the rabbit was cooked.

Fang Zhixing and Xigou divided and devoured it, enjoying it immensely.

The next morning.

Dawn was just breaking when a man and a dog woke up early and left quietly.

They continued their journey tirelessly, crossing mountains and rivers.

Although the road ahead was long and unfamiliar, Fang Zhixing held a map and knew the rough direction, so he managed to avoid getting lost.

That afternoon, they passed through a forest, and the scene suddenly opened up in front of them, revealing a fork in the road.

There was a tea stall by the road, with a few travelers drinking tea.

Seeing this, Xigou tactfully hid.

Fang Zhixing walked over on his own, ordered a pot of tea, and drank a few sips to quench his thirst.

Then he took out his map and asked the stall owner, "Boss, where are we here?"

The stall owner replied, "Sir, this is ’Yima Fork’, if you continue a few more miles, it’s ’Yima Bridge’."

Fang Zhixing’s eyes lit up, excitedly asking, "After ’Yima Bridge’, it’s ’Yima Plain’ just beyond that, right?"

The stall owner quickly agreed, "Yes, yes. Are you planning to leave Qingfeng County and head to Xiahe County, sir?"

Qingfeng County and Xiahe County are only separated by a plain, which is the Yima Plain, symbolic of a flat and broad space.

Fang Zhixing confirmed, "Yes, I’m thinking of doing some business in Xiahe County."

The stall owner urgently advised, "I would strongly advise you not to go, Xiahe County is currently in the throes of war, suffering greatly from military disasters."

Fang Zhixing furrowed his brow, asking, "Rebels?"

"Yes, yes,"

The stall owner lowered his voice, cautioning, "The Great Rebel Greedy Wolf, after being defeated in Qingfeng County, retreated to Xiahe County and, after lying low for half a year, suddenly struck, capturing seven of the nine counties of Xiahe within a few days, with immense momentum!"

Fang Zhixing chuckled inwardly, continuously saying, "Thanks for the reminder, I will be careful."

Shortly after, he returned to the forest, swiftly taking Xigou through the fork in the road and running forward.

Soon, a stone arch bridge appeared ahead, beside which stood a stele inscribed with the words "Yima Bridge."

On the other side of the stone arch bridge, a mountain over a hundred meters tall loomed.

Atop that mountain peak, a grand and majestic villa was faintly visible.

Xigou couldn’t help but ask curiously, "What place is that?"

Fang Zhixing glanced at it and shook his head, "I don’t know, it’s not marked on the map."

The pair, man and dog, didn’t stop their steps and directly stepped onto the stone arch bridge.

At that moment, clop-clop-clop, a carriage approached from the front.

The stone arch bridge was not very wide, and the carriage almost occupied most of the bridge.

Fang Zhixing and Xigou did not want to complicate matters, so they moved to the side of the bridge, politely yielding the way.

The carriage came slowly and suddenly stopped.

"Fang Maofu, get on."

A familiar voice emanated from the carriage compartment.

Fang Zhixing was momentarily stunned, then boldly stepped onto the carriage and entered the compartment.

Sitting inside the carriage was a young woman dressed in a red gown, dignified and luxurious, stunningly beautiful.

Fang Zhixing calmly greeted with a bow, "Miss Wu."

The person turned out to be Wu Hongqiu, who smiled and said, "Have a seat and let’s talk."

Fang Zhixing sat down and smiled, asking, "There are over a dozen roads out of Qingfeng County, how did Miss Wu determine I would take this one?"

Wu Hongqiu responded vaguely, "If I said it was luck and coincidence, would you believe me?"

Fang Zhixing clicked his tongue, "The power of the Aristocratic Families is indeed vast, escaping from your grasp is indeed not that easy."

Wu Hongqiu paused briefly, then suddenly said, "I’m not here to capture you and take you back, but rather to offer you an opportunity."

Fang Zhixing’s brows raised, he listened attentively.

Wu Hongqiu’s expression turned serious as she carefully asked, "You are of the Nine Ox Realm, right?"

Fang Zhixing replied, "What if I am?"

Wu Hongqiu asked further, "The six Nine Ox Realm individuals from the Feng and Shen families, were they killed by your hand?"

Fang Zhixing spread his hands and said, "Do you think I’m capable of that?"

Wu Hongqiu sneered, "Though it’s hard to believe, you indeed created a miracle that took everyone by surprise."

Fang Zhixing watched her calmly and responded, "So, the ’opportunity’ you mentioned is?"

Wu Hongqiu continued, "I will arrange for your staged death, allowing you to disappear from the public eye. Thereafter, you will assume a new identity and serve the Wu Family. The terms will definitely not let you down."

Fang Zhixing could not help but laugh speechlessly, "I’ve just been betrayed by the Luo Family, do you think I will jump from one fire pit into another?"

"Otherwise?"

Wu Hongqiu, righteous and bold, "Even if you escape Qinghe County and go somewhere else, isn’t the result the same? The whole world belongs to the Aristocratic Families; wherever you go, you will encounter another Luo Family."

Fang Zhixing smiled, "I had no choice before, but now I don’t want to be a lapdog for the Aristocratic Families anymore, I want to be a person."

Wu Hongqiu coldly said, "Don’t think that just because you’ve advanced to the Nine Ox Realm you can act wildly. To tell you the truth, the Nine Ox Realm is nothing; with just one order from me, you would die a horrid death."

Fang Zhixing’s eyes narrowed slightly, he lightly said, "Similar words were also said to me by Feng Xinglu and Shen Jinsong."

Wu Hongqiu paused in her breath, staring hard at Fang Zhixing.

After a long while, Fang Zhixing stood up and said, "Thanks for your good intentions, Miss Wu. The road of Jianghu is long, perhaps we’ll meet again if destined."

He alighted from the carriage and strode forward.

Xigou immediately followed him.

The man and the dog crossed the bridge.

Moments later, the carriage slowly started moving, heading towards the opposite side of the bridge.

The two of them entered a Black Pine Forest along the road and sped forward.

Before long, Fang Zhixing emerged from the Black Pine Forest, and suddenly, the scenery changed to reveal a vast plain.

"Ha, we’ve made it out!"

Fang Zhixing was delighted, smiling, "Our current location is right on the border of Qingfeng County, by crossing this plain, we’ll be able to reach Xiahe County."

Xigou looked around, clicking his tongue, "Such an open area makes it easy to expose our tracks!"

Fang Zhixing, however, shook his head, "No matter, the One Horse Plain isn’t very large. With our speed, we can reach its end in half a day."

Xigou understood, nodding, "Then let’s run, the sooner we leave this dreadful place of Qinghe County, the better."

The man and the dog then sprinted with all their might, kicking up a trail of dust on the plain.

Half a day flew by.

Suddenly looking up, Fang Zhixing saw a mountain range rising from the ground, majestic and rugged with a span of hundreds of miles.

The man and the dog, unfazed by fatigue, continued forward, forcefully scaling the mountain range with their strong physical abilities.

Two days later, a town appeared ahead.

Fang Zhixing finally saw human habitation again.

"End of this volume!"
