Chapter 354: 211 Escape and Kill_2
They kept a very low profile.
Even though Fang Zhixing had already reached the early stage of the Nine Ox Realm, and Xigou was no ordinary Mutant Beast.
But they still chose to be cautious, taking the small paths as far from the main roads and official tracks as possible.
An entire morning quickly passed.
By the time it was noon.
Fang Zhixing had arrived at the fork of the San Cha River. At this place, there were no roads left to travel, only boats to ride.
Of course, the ferry was crowded and bustling.
From a distance, Fang Zhihang saw many wanted posters with his and Xigou’s images plastered on the billboard.
"Damn it, they’re even going after a dog, that’s just f*cking inhumane," Xigou cursed.
Fang Zhixing didn’t go to the ferry, but instead walked a few miles downstream and happened upon a black-awning boat docked by the river’s edge.
A middle-aged fisherman sat at the bow, leisurely smoking his pipe.
Suddenly, Fang Zhixing’s figure flickered like a ghost, appearing behind the fisherman.
The fisherman was completely unaware, his vision darkened, and he lost consciousness in an instant.
Fang Zhixing stripped off the fisherman’s straw raincoat and put it on himself, then threw the fisherman ashore.
Xigou jumped straight onto the boat and crawled under the black awning.
Fang Zhixing rowed the boat downstream with the current.
The sunlight was just right that day, and the wind was favorable; the small black-awning boat crested the waves.
About an hour later, Fang Zhixing, who was rowing, suddenly stood up.
He looked ahead on the water, where downstream, the river narrowed and there appeared to be a checkpoint.
Two large boats guarded the checkpoint and all passing vessels had to undergo inspection.
Seeing this arrangement, Fang Zhixing was momentarily speechless.
He had been missing for almost twenty days, yet the search outside continued unabated.
He glanced at both banks of the river, looking for a way to break through the checkpoint.
But things were not so simple.
The reason a checkpoint could stop people was first, because of its advantageous geographical position, and second, because the Court had built a strong defense system.
Seeing this clearly, Fang Zhixing sat down and pulled out a map to spread it open.
"Qinghe County mainly relies on waterways, and it’s difficult to leave here by water, even harder by land," he said.
Thinking this, Fang Zhixing quickly realized that he must get past this checkpoint.
"Xigou," he called in a soft voice.
Xigou poked his menacing big dog head out and asked, "What’s up?"
Fang Zhixing said carefully, "Get ready for a fight; we’re going to break through soon."
Xigou stretched his neck to observe ahead, his eyes widening with tension, "Forcing our way through might be tough."
He quickly glanced at the other boats passing by, suggesting, "Why not sneak onto one of the large merchant ships? We might be able to slip through the checkpoint unnoticed?"
Fang Zhixing rolled his eyes, replying irritably, "You’re nearly two meters tall now, how are you going to sneak on? Shall I kill you again?"
Xigou rushed to say, "No, being killed is too unbearable, and I’ve already developed a psychological shadow.
Moreover, there will certainly be more checkpoints ahead, and we can’t just kill me every time we encounter one; this isn’t a sustainable plan."
Fang Zhixing had been thinking the same thing and nodded, "So killing you is just a backup plan, not my first choice."
Xigou sighed in relief, fearing that Fang Zhixing would silence him without a word.
He hurriedly came up with an idea, "The guards are less vigilant at night; why not wait until it gets dark and then sneak past?"
Fang Zhixing replied, "I’m not familiar with the river channels. This stretch of water is over a kilometer wide with rolling waves. Once it’s dark, I won’t know which direction to row in."
"True..."
Xigou understood that a significant reason Fang Zhixing had been able to avoid the search before was his familiarity with the terrain.
From the County to White Crane Villa, and then to the Wind Thunder Restricted Zone, he knew those places too well, and could navigate them with his eyes closed.
But once they left the County, it was all unchartered territory, and his advantages disappeared.
Xigou couldn’t help but sigh, "Well then, we’ll force our damn way through."
Fang Zhixing rowed the boat forward, entering the inspection area of the checkpoint, where large and small boats lined up for inspection.
A large boat was in front of the black-awning boat.
Several officers dressed in official garb boarded the large boat to inspect inside and out.
The large boat must have been a grain transport, carrying food from outside to the county, and was returning after unloading.
The boat was empty.
There was not much to inspect.
The officers gave it a cursory look and disembarked.
Soon, the large boat was allowed to proceed.
Next, Fang Zhixing rowed forward, stopped, and prepared for inspection.
An officer approached, shouting, "Where are you headed? Show your identity token."
As Fang Zhixing pulled out his identity token, he smiled and responded, "Sir, I’m just a fisherman going fishing."
The officer took the identity token and saw the name "Fang Zhixing" with the household registration from Qinglin County.
"Eh, how did someone from Qinglin County end up fishing in these waters?"
The officer blinked, clearly suspicious, but in the next instant, he noticed a Gold Ticket beneath the identity token.
The officer’s pupils shrank, and he looked up deeply at Fang Zhixing.
"My lord, this is a token of my respect, please be kind," said Fang Zhixing earnestly.
The officer looked around subtly, pocketed the Gold Ticket, and declared, "The inspection’s done; you may pass."
With those words!
Xigou laughed delightedly, whispering, "Ah, money talks, why didn’t you do this earlier and spare me the anxiety."
Fang Zhixing quickly sat back down and rowed the boat forward.
The officer stepped back a few paces, watching the black-awning boat move forward a few meters, then suddenly gritted his teeth and shouted, "There’s a wanted criminal on that boat!"
Dang dang dang~
Someone struck the gong, and its urgent ringing quickly spread throughout the checkpoint.
