Chapter 298: 184 Octopus
The tiger hunts the deer!
Two mutant beasts rapidly ran past the man, the woman, and the dog, completely unaware of their presence.
"Thank goodness..."
Green Peony let out a sigh of relief. Judging by its size, that striped tiger was definitely a peak second-level mutant beast, not something she could handle.
"Let’s go."
Fang Zhixing looked relaxed. When the striped tiger appeared, he didn’t even bother to hide.
Seeing this, Green Peony’s mind settled, and afterwards, she quickened her pace considerably, no longer proceeding with such caution and indecisiveness at every turn.
About four hours later, the pair and the dog arrived in front of a cave entrance.
Next to the cave stood a stele, engraved with the strong and forceful words, "Wind Thunder No. 7 Cave."
Fang Zhixing leaned over to look down and discovered that beneath the cave was a long sloping tunnel leading deep into the underground.
The tunnel was more than thirty meters in diameter, not seemingly naturally formed, yet not quite like it was man-made either.
And no wonder, to build a tunnel of such large diameter, the manpower, material, and financial resources required were simply beyond imagination.
Moreover, the inside of the tunnel was not dark, but rather very bright.
The rock walls were covered with many luminous stones, illuminating the tunnel as clear as day, even brighter than the outside to the point of being blinding.
"Young master, we’re about to enter the underground world. We’re at least half an hour ahead of schedule."
Green Peony said with a happy smile, leading the way in front and plunging into the tunnel.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou exchanged a glance and immediately followed behind.
Though the tunnel was spacious, the air became noticeably stuffier, carrying an indescribable strange odor.
Fang Zhixing noticed many small holes on the rock walls, about as thick as a pinky finger, with a regular spiral pattern inside.
"What’s this smell? It’s so fragrant!"
Xigou suddenly approached the rock wall, sniffing around.
Before long, he suddenly opened his mouth, bit something, and began tugging at it.
Fang Zhixing glanced sideways and saw that it was a creature resembling an earthworm, its body covered with spiral patterns.
Those holes in the rock wall must be where these earthworm-like creatures had come out.
"What is that?" Fang Zhixing asked.
Green Peony replied, "Oh, those bugs are called ’Mud Dragons.’ They’re not large as larvae, but adults can grow to be a hundred meters long."
She surveyed the tunnel and said, "This cave we’re in was actually dug by the mud dragons."
Fang Zhixing suddenly understood. No wonder this tunnel was so large, yet showed no signs of erosion from the ages.
Xigou pulled out a mud dragon, chewed it a couple of times, and ate it.
"Mmm, delicious!"
Xigou’s eyes widened in amazement.
Fang Zhixing frowned, puzzled, "That thing tastes good?"
Xigou replied, "You should try it, it’s a delicacy."
Fang Zhixing was speechless, just feeling disgusted.
But Xigou was addicted, continuously catching mud dragons to eat while walking, devouring dozens along the way without tiring of them.
A moment later, a chilling wind suddenly surged from up ahead.
The cold wind whooshed over Fang Zhixing.
Fang Zhixing furrowed his brows, feeling a bit cold.
Green Peony immediately took out a leather coat from her knapsack and put it on, reminding him, "In the Wind Thunder Restricted Area, apart from the frequent thunderstorms, there is also the especially fierce ’Earthly Malevolent Wind.’"
"Earthly Malevolent Wind..."
Fang Zhixing’s eyes narrowed slightly as he raised his head and finally saw the end of the tunnel.
The man, the woman, and the dog walked out.
Looking around, the ground was covered with undulating mountains and hills, large rivers, and dense forests scattered among them, conveying a sense of endless grandeur.
The sky above was even more wondrous, thick purple clouds carrying lightning and thunder made for a spectacular scene.
Fang Zhixing looked up for a while but could not find the dome.
It was less like being underground and more like having arrived in another world.
Fang Zhixing was deeply moved, marveling, "Are we really underground?"
Green Peony smiled and said, "Yes, this is the underground world, also known as the Wind Thunder Realm."
Fang Zhixing raised his finger toward the sky, asking, "Has anyone reached the dome?"
Green Peony shook her head and said, "Some have tried, but the clouds cover the entire sky, and once a person climbs to a certain height, they get struck by lightning.
In short, I haven’t heard of anyone who’s managed to pass through the cloud layer filled with thunder and seen what the dome looks like."
Fang Zhixing nodded in understanding, feeling incredulous.
Green Peony pointed toward a lush, endless forest in the distance and said with a smile, "That place is one of the habitats of the Eight-Clawed Tian Luo Spider. It will take us at least an hour to get there. Let’s go."
Fang Zhixing had no objections.
Next, they crossed over a large mountain and forest, trod on a plain, and waded through several rivers.
Along the way, they encountered two mutant beast attacks, both swiftly dealt with by Fang Zhixing.
At last, Fang Zhixing arrived on the outskirts of that dense forest.
Green Peony continued, "Young master, from here on, you’ll have to enter the forest by yourself to hunt the Eight-Clawed Tian Luo Spider. I can’t be of any help."
Fang Zhixing nodded and replied, "Just wait for me here."
He and Xigou walked into the dense jungle.
Inside the jungle, towering trees abounded, and the light was rather dim. Only when thunder roared across the sky, illuminating the forest with flashes of lightning, did the woods briefly brighten.
As Xigou moved, he peed to mark his path.
Fang Zhixing activated his Red Blood Pupil, scanning his surroundings back and forth.
"Chirp chirp~"
Suddenly, a sharp and chaotic chirping sound came from somewhere, irksome to the ear.
Fang Zhixing turned around and looked up, gazing between the treetops above.
He saw a troop of Four-Armed Monkeys swinging like on swings from one large tree to another, in groups.
Gradually, the monkeys moved closer.
Fang Zhixing and Xigou quickly hid.
"Chirp!"
Suddenly, a little monkey screamed. It pointed at where Fang Zhixing was hidden and kept shouting.
The next moment, with a howl, the troop of monkeys stopped.
Several tall Four-Armed Monkeys landed on the nearby trees.
They held stones, nuts, and other hard objects in their hands, screeching and throwing them at Fang Zhixing.
Fang Zhixing’s expression darkened slightly as golden scales appeared on his body, and he stood firm.
Stones and nuts fell like rain, pummeling him all at once.
Fang Zhixing didn’t move a muscle. After a while, the monkeys seemed to find it boring, screaming as they swung away.
"Damn, a bunch of spiteful monkeys..."
Xigou crawled out of a narrow hole, cursing and showing extreme contempt.
"Don’t move!"
Fang Zhixing’s mind stirred, and he looked up coldly.
Xigou asked blankly, "What’s wrong?"
Fang Zhixing did not utter a word; his blood-red pupils reflected images of strange creatures.
They had eight claws and were hanging upside down between the trunks.
But aside from the eight claws, their body contours were very much like those of humans.
"We’re surrounded."
Fang Zhixing took out his bow and arrow and warned, "Those Four-Armed Monkeys just now weren’t coming for us, they were running for their lives."
Xigou shivered and shrank back into the hole.
But the next moment, a ripple flickered through the dim air.
Xigou suddenly felt his scalp tighten, followed by a surge of intense pain.
"Ahh~"
Xigou screamed as a massive force pulled him from the hole, lifting him off the ground and into the air.
"Fang Zhixing, save me!"
Xigou yelled desperately, "Something’s grabbed my scalp!"
Fang Zhixing’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he saw clearly a long strand of spider silk adhering to Xigou’s scalp.
The other end of the spider silk extended deep into the treetops.
A moment later, Xigou was hauled up to a height of fifty meters and stopped.
Then, the treetops trembled.
Xigou struggled and looked up, his dog eyes bulging with fright, almost wetting himself.
A gigantic eight-clawed spider descended along the silk.
What was strange was the spider’s head, which was eerily similar to a human’s, with long hair and a woman’s face.
However, the face was stiff and rigid, like a stone sculpture.
At a glance, Xigou couldn’t help but think of a doll with a fake smile.
In such a scenario...
Xigou was greatly shocked and swung his front paws fiercely.
"Wolf Shadow Gale Claw!"
The air twisted slightly, releasing a sharp intent.
Crack~
The paw shadow struck the face of the eight-clawed spider.
The human face instantly cracked open, revealing a dense network of fissures.
The face still wore a false smile as its eight claws moved subtly, rippling through the air.
Xigou stiffened, and the next instant, crisscrossing gashes of blood appeared on his body.
A purple thunderbolt happened to fall at that moment, brightly illuminating the woods.
In the light, Xigou’s body shattered into hundreds of pieces, falling from the sky.
As the pieces hit the ground, they abruptly came together.
Xigou revived with full health and quickly jumped next to Fang Zhixing, screaming in terror, "Momma, how did I die, was I dismembered?"
