Chapter 56: Red Flags and Royalty
Before Marcus could even process the situation, they both arrived at the courtyard behind the academy—the same wide, open plaza where he’d once been challenged to a duel by three generic bullies, their names already slipping from memory like an unimportant tutorial.
The sunlight filtered through the healthy green trees, casting soft, bright glows onto the neatly paved ground. Magical fauna lounged around the perimeter, grazing or hopping lazily between flowerbeds infused with ambient mana. The air held a faint, sweet scent—like springtime and ozone.
"What’s there to do in this world anyways?"
Marcus asked aloud, half to Victoria and half to himself, while eyeing one of the creatures nearby—a plump, furred hybrid that looked like a rabbit with the tail of a squirrel and the twitchy ears of a fennec.
He crouched down, studying the beast as it munched on petals that sparkled faintly when touched.
"I wonder if they taste good..."
He muttered, eyes narrowing thoughtfully like a gourmet in the making.
Victoria laughed—an airy, amused sound—as she stepped beside him, also examining the odd creature with a tilted head.
"Probably just a normal rabbit or something... well... not like I tasted one before."
Marcus gave her a sidelong glance, lips curling into an impish grin.
"I was worried for a second..."
Victoria turned to glare at him, her expression souring with the perfect mix of disbelief and irritation.
"You’re an assassin, how does eating rabbit make you worried?"
She shot back, folding her arms and raising a skeptical brow.
Before Marcus could fire off a clever reply, a voice—smooth as polished silk and laced with quiet authority—cut through the air like a knife.
"What are you two doing?"
Even before turning around, Marcus already knew.
There was only one person who could weaponize tone with such practiced elegance.
The Prince.
AKA, Prince Leon Viremont von Leyen.
"Just admiring the animals, your highness."
Marcus replied with a casual chuckle as he stood, brushing off his sleeves and slipping his hands into his pockets. He met Leon’s gaze squarely.
The Prince looked immaculate, as always. His blonde hair shimmered like woven sunlight, fluttering softly with every gust as though the wind itself conspired to perfect his image. His royal-blue uniform was spotless, lined with silver filigree and crested with his noble sigil—every inch of him sculpted like a protagonist blessed by narrative bias.
I want to punch that handsome face so bad...
Marcus thought, biting down a smirk.
Leon didn’t return the smile. His gaze hardened, narrowing with enough pressure that a lesser student might’ve buckled or stammered on sight. The tension between them twisted the air.
"Can’t we all just—"
Victoria began, her voice halfway between exasperated and diplomatic.
But before she could finish, Leon reached out and seized her sleeve, gently but firmly pulling her to stand beside him. His grip was possessive—measured, yet unmistakably claiming.
"Do not talk to this man,"
Leon said coldly, his eyes never leaving Marcus’s,
"He’s a bad influence on you."
Around them, the background began to buzz. Students paused mid-step, turning toward the scene like moths to a flame. Whispers spread like wildfire. The Prince involved in a public confrontation? Instant drama. Instant gossip. Instant clout.
"I can make deci—"
Victoria tried again, only to be cut off a second time as Leon placed a finger over her mouth, silencing her.
His smile sparkled—literally. A charm spell subtly activated across his features, enhancing his already obnoxious aura of perfection. It glinted off his teeth like a gemstone commercial.
"We’re engaged, you know,"
He said, voice dipped in syrupy arrogance.
"You can’t just mingle with other men without my permission."
The words caused a visible recoil in Victoria’s expression. Her spine stiffened, and her eyes flicked with restrained disgust. A phantom chill crawled up her neck, her whole posture screaming discomfort as Leon’s hand drifted to her waist.
Marcus blinked slowly. Did that man just sparkle while being toxic? he thought.
Victoria forced a tight, razor-edged smile in Marcus’s direction, her left eye twitching slightly, as if a vein was seconds from bursting.
"Well... you’re a red flag if I’ve seen one,"
Marcus said while flashing an annoyed grin.
"But I guess most romance novel and game male leads tend to be one."
