Chapter 47: 47:Direwolf Attack

The air was crisp in the early morning, the sun peeking through the trees that bordered the construction site near the backyard walls of Apus City. The once-quiet forest was now bustling with activity as labourers worked tirelessly to raise a formidable wall, a bulwark against potential threats.

The wall was constructed from massive granite blocks, each weighing several hundred pounds, painstakingly transported from the nearby quarries. Timber scaffolding framed the structure, providing stability as workers climbed to affix the stones. They used a mixture of lime, sand, and water to create mortar, expertly slathering it between each block, ensuring they would endure the test of time.

Surprisingly, mortar and cement had already been quite prevalent in use.Except for firearms, a quite number of things had already been in process.Except for lack of culture, and modern entertainment the age was quite good compared to western history.

Roland already planned to open the entertainment industry after things were set.

...

Soon, The rhythmic sound of chiselling echoed as skilled artisans carved decorative motifs into some stones, an effort to marry practicality with beauty.

Wagons laden with raw materials moved steadily in and out of the site, pulled by sturdy draft horses. Teams of labourers, clad in leather tunics and sturdy boots, communicated in gruff voices, coordinating their efforts as they manoeuvred the stones into place.

Sweat glistened on their brows, evidence of their labour under the watchful eye of overseers who barked orders and ensured safety protocols were followed.

At the centre of this activity walked Hilda, a young woman with sharp green eyes with a cold expression.

She was accompanied by Nil, her elder brother, who had been assigned by their father to oversee the construction. Flanking them were Captain Oren of the 1st Corps and Kara of the 3rd Corps, both were trained guard and were Beginner Master Knight of Rank 2

As they walked along the perimeter of the construction site, Hilda turned to Nil. "Do you think the wall will be strong enough to withstand an attack in times of war?"

Nil, a tall and wiry figure, rubbed the back of his neck, contemplating. His father made sure to call him into the study room to have discussion and have taught me quite a number of things.

Some of which were odd but useful.

"If they keep up this pace and maintain quality, it should. But the real test will come when the wars arrive and people try to break it and that won’t just attack head-on; they’re cunning."

Hilda’s lips twitched seeing his brother’s deep thoughts.

’Brother, aren’t you looking too far ahead.Father asked for durability and you are already thinking about the war.’

He scanned the work being done, noting the strategic placements of defences. "We might need to reinforce the northern section. That’s where they’ve come through before."

Oren looked at two siblings and then at Karra.

Nil was just around 7 but he didn’t look like a kid at all.He was quite mature.

At that time, the chief artisan came around and, giving a deep bow, said "We’ve fortified that area as much as we can with the resources available. But we should also train the militia for quick response. If the wall is breached, we’ll need every able-bodied villager prepared to defend their homes."

Kara nodded in agreement. "We should plan drills to make sure everyone knows their roles. The last thing we need is chaos when the beasts come."

Hilda’s brow furrowed, "But what if it’s too late? The last time Saber tooth attacked caught us off guard."

She paused, glancing at her brother. "What do you think, Brother?"

Nil met her gaze, his expression serious. "I think we have a chance if we’re proactive. The villagers need to understand what’s at stake. We can’t afford to wait for an attack to galvanise them."

When the group’s serious discussion was heard by workers around, they couldn’t help but pause a bit.

Weren’t we building a wall to cover us? Why are you talking about danger?

Most of the villagers knew the danger but rarely anyone suffered in a human settlement. There hadn’t been any or minor conflict around their region.

As for those ferocious monsters, never had anyone attacked them here.

As they neared the newly erected wall, a chilling sound broke the air, a deep growl followed by the unmistakable sound of hooves pounding against the ground.

The guards immediately straightened, their instincts kicking in as they exchanged worried glances.

"Did you hear that?" Hilda asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Get behind us," Oren commanded, instinctively positioning himself in front of the group, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. Kara followed suit, scanning the treeline for movement.

Nil’s eyes narrowed as he listened intently. "It sounds like they’re close. We need to find cover if it’s the demonic beasts, we won’t want to be out in the open."

The air grew tense, as a heavy silence hanged over the construction site as Hilda and Nil stood paralyzed by fear.

The distant growls of the Direwolves echoed ominously, vibrating through the trees and sending a shiver down their spines. Just as Oren began shouting orders to his men, the first of the Direwolves emerged from the dense underbrush, its massive form a blur of dark fur and menacing fangs.

"Ring the warning bell! Tell the civilians to flee, and guards from the defense!" Karra’s voice pierced the air, a mixture of urgency and authority as she turned to the construction site’s watchtower.

This was a system developed by Roland. At every 100 meters, there would be a small station that in an emergency would ring a bell, and on hearing the bell, the nearby station would strike the bell.

Following the process, the sound of the bell would travel and reach the center of Apus Village, which was Weiss Manor, saving a great amount of time.

Oren immediately sprang into action, rallying the nearby guards. "Get ready! We’ll hold them off! Position yourselves!" His eyes were fierce, his grip on his sword steady as he faced the oncoming threat. "Stay close to me! We fight as a unit!"

Nil instinctively pulled Hilda behind him, desperation creeping into his voice. "Run! You need to get out of the place safely!"

But Hilda’s green eyes blazed with determination. "No! I can’t just leave. I need to fight and protect others!"

Before she could argue further, Nil’s hand shot out, and he gently but firmly hit her head. "Stop that nonsense and run!" he shouted but the fear in his tone betrayed his bravado.

"Young Master and Miss, you both need to run!" Oren echoed, casting a worried glance at the approaching horde.

The construction site, still in its early stages, offered little refuge. Most of the wall was yet to be completed, with gaps and heights providing ample opportunity for the beasts. Five Direwolves, each nearly the size of a horse, leaped over the half-finished wall, their growls resonating as they spotted their prey.

The nearby workers attempted to evacuate, but panic set in too late. Several were trampled underfoot as the wolves surged into the fray.

Oren was quick to assess the situation, and with a fierce determination, he rallied the guards. "Form a line! We can’t let them break into the village!"
