Chapter 355: Chapter 354: Daddy Chu’s Father

Liao Chen had already received a message informing her of their visit to the Yingxue Nunnery. Since morning, she had been waiting eagerly. Only at 1 p.m., she saw several carriages from the Tang Garden and a sedan chair arriving under the protection of the guards outside the main gate.

Chen Afu stepped out of the sedan. The moment she tried to bow to Liao Chen, she was held off. Liao Chen examined Chen Afu up and down, satisfied, she smiled and said: "Hmm, you seem to have gained some weight, not bad."

Chen Afu grimaced, "I’ve grown too fat, it’s ugly."

Liao Chen laughed, "If the mother is sturdy, the child will grow better. Don’t worry about being fat."

The two children fell asleep, carried directly to the Zen room in the backyard for rest. As Chen Afu and Liao Chen slowly walked towards the back of the temple, Chen Afu whispered, "Has grandma heard about the incident of the birds dropping feces at the Lingyin Temple?"

Liao Chen laughed and said, "I overheard some pilgrims mentioning it. They said some woman offended the Bird Fairy, who summoned a flock of birds to drop feces on her, scaring her into hiding in the main hall."

Chen Afu smiled and asked, "Do you know who that woman was, grandma?" Before Liao Chen could answer, she laughed and said, "It was Princess Rong Zhao. We saw a flock of birds, gathered like the thick lid of a pot, singling her out to drop feces on. Her servant shielded her with an umbrella, which quickly became covered in a thick layer." After finishing, she covered her mouth with a handkerchief and burst into laughter.

Upon hearing that the woman covered in bird droppings was Rong Zhao, Liao Chen paused for a moment. With a calm face, she clasped her hands together and said, "Amitabha Buddha. As the saying goes,’As one sows, so shall one reap...’"

Unable to detect any signs of joy on Liao Chen’s face, Chen Afu was slightly puzzled. She continued, "I heard that in February, the birds also dropped feces on Rong Zhao. This repeated occurrence must be more than a coincidence. She must have done something objectionable. Even the birds can’t stand her."

Liao Chen nodded, she chanted a few scriptures and suggested to Chen Afu: "You have been on the road for some time. Why don’t you rest in the Zen Room?"

Indeed, Chen Afu, who was already feeling a little sleepy, went to rest in the Zen Room. The previous worries and hardships had made Chen Afu extremely exhausted. As soon as she lay down, she fell into a deep sleep.

She was awakened by the sound of cheerful laughter and the chirping of birds.

It turned out that Chu Lingxuan had arrived. Chu Hanyan, despite being told to keep her voice down, couldn’t contain her excitement and loudly exclaimed, "Daddy, daddy, why did you come out of the blue?"

As Chu Lingxuan lifted his daughter in the air with a grin, he said, "I heard you were here when I returned from my trip, so I hurried over to see you."

Chu Hanyan burst out laughing dramatically and said, "Daddy, I have some exciting news. Mother is pregnant with twins! Grandpa says we could have two baby brothers."

Chu Lingxuan responded with a hearty laugh, "Regardless of whether we get brother or sister, we mustn’t put too much pressure on your mother."

Listening to Chu Lingxuan’s words, Dabao was touched. How hadn’t he thought of this before? Everyone was implying that his mother was expecting boys. But what if his mother were to give birth to girls? Every family member would be disappointed — especially his grandfather. It seemed that he had been easily swayed by a few good books and candies from his grandpa.

Feeling elated, Dabao went forth to pay his respects to Chu Lingxuan. He exclaimed, "Daddy, today we saw a flock of birds pooping on the mean lady, and Jin Bao joined in as well!..."

With his vivid storytelling, assisted by Chu Hanyan’s additional comments, Chu Lingxuan burst out laughing. Although he had heard some gossip from the local pilgrims, he had been too busy to question anyone. He had no idea that the woman was Rong Zhao, or that she had tried to harm Afu and Yan’er...

After listening to the children’s stories, Chu Lingxuan expressed his delight, "I’m thrilled!"

After paying his respects to Liao Chen in the pavilion, he saw Chen Afu emerging from the Zen Room. She stood quietly at the door, her belly noticeably rounder than when he had last seen her. A smile on her face, but her eyes seemed to be full of unspoken words.

Seeing her in this state, Chu Lingxuan’s smile broadened even more.

"Afu." Chu Lingxuan called out and moved towards her.

Liao Chen stopped Dabao and Yan’er, saying to Chu Lingxuan and Chen Afu, "Now there aren’t many pilgrims, Xin’er can take Fu’er for a stroll outside. The air is refreshing in the mountains and the view is beautiful." He added, "Xuan’er, support Fu’er and avoid any falls."

The two children also clamored to go, but Liao Chen calmed them down with a smile, "You don’t come often, so you have to keep me company."

Chen Afu started laughing. She truly was a good mother-in-law-looking after her daughter-in-law and listening to her son’s wishes. Unlike some mothers-in-law, who fear their sons being too close with their wives.

Obeying his mother’s command, Chu Lingxuan left the Zen Courtyard hand in hand with Chen Afu. Hong Fei and several guards followed them at a distance. They passed through Yulan Garden and Plum Garden and reached the back door of the nunnery. Past the door, a waterfall cascaded down a distant mountainside, forming a stream two-meters wide, flowing back around Yingxue Nunnery and then down the mountain.

The cool breeze rustled in this place, the air was fresh, the sounds of cicadas buzzed, and a vast expanse of lush greenery and red clouds filled their sight... The beautiful scenery was intoxicating. With no outsiders around, the two people strolled along the stream hand in hand, feeling completely at ease.

Chen Afu let out a few deep breaths, her mood lightening a little. She had originally intended to tell him what Wu Zhi had said, but the current atmosphere rendered her unable to break the serene mood with harsh words.

Although they had been engaged for so long, this was the first time they had taken a leisurely stroll like lovers in their previous lives.

Chu Lingxuan refrained from saying harsh words as well, only sharing stories of their journey and how much he missed her... Occasionally he squeezed her hand harder, and when he felt trees could hide their actions from people behind, quickly pecked her on the lips.

Chen Afu feigned annoyance and said, "Can’t you kiss at home? Why must you insist on doing it here? It would be so embarrassing if someone saw us."

Seeing that Chen Afu’s lips were red and plump, and she clearly enjoyed their intimacy yet used irony, Chu Lingxuan fell even more in love. He wished to take another kiss, but he did not dare because of the people at the back. Laughing, he said, "Kissing at home feels different from doing it outside ..." He then whispered something in her ear.

His audacious words made the usually shameless Chen Afu blush. She pinched his arm and said, "You’re going to get us killed, we’re near the nunnery."

Chu Lingxuan laughed and said, "We’re outside the nunnery, separated by a wall."

When they reached the back of two trees, Chu Lingxuan quickly kissed Chen Afu again.

The two followed the stream and came to the ginkgo trees in front of the nunnery. Then they turned back to the path they had come.

What they didn’t know was that two children, trailing behind a small swallow, had run out of the nunnery’s entrance, calling, "Jin Bao, slow down, wait for us..."

Following the two children were five guards, three older women, and two maids.

They were Chen Dabao and Chu Hanyan.

Jin Yanzi was flying low, stopping and starting, until it reached a gazebo a hundred meters away from Yingxue Nunnery. It circled around the gazebo once, but did not continue flying forward. Instead, it perched on a railing inside the gazebo.

Because it saw that its owner, Daddy Chu, was standing there with his back turned towards it, gazing upon Yingxue Nunnery.
