Chapter 318: Chapter 317: Title

Chen Afu remembered the red envelope Marquis Chu had given her this morning. Upon opening it, she found 1,000 taels of silver.

She beamed as she took out a foreign lacquered small wooden box with painted flowers from a drawer in her dresser. The box was filled with stacks of silver notes and a few pieces of silver. She put the silver note inside and asked Xia Yue to keep a record of it.

Her treasure box of six thousand taels of silver had already been converted into silver notes at the bank, all of which were stored in this box. Also, the profit she earned last year from the Hongyun Hot Pot Restaurant, worth four thousand taels of silver, had been transferred to her by Yang Mingyuan with Chu Lingxuan’s help.

Inside this box, she had over ten thousand taels of silver in the form of notes.

Chu Lingxuan teased her, "My wife does not lack money now. So why does she still smile like this at the sight of silver notes?"

Chen Afu placed the wooden box back in the drawer and replied with a smile, "If you’ve never experienced poverty, you wouldn’t understand the feeling."

At her comment, Chu Lingxuan laughed and walked to a cabinet to fetch a small red sandalwood box. "This is part of my private savings. Take it and buy anything you like. Remember, your husband doesn’t lack money, so you won’t either."

Chen Afu took the box, which Chu Lingxuan had brought back from the Outer Court before dinner. Inside, she found some silver notes, which amounted to four thousand taels, and five gold bars along with a few small gold ingots.

Originally, Chu Lingxuan wanted to buy more jewelry for Chen Afu, but since his wife seemed to prefer silver, he gave her the profit from the Hongyun Restaurant along with some gold.

He was completely satisfied watching his wife smile with joy. After counting the notes and gold, she placed them back in the drawer of her dressing table.

He then pretended to be hurt, and said, "Why do I feel like you laughed more happily looking at the box than when you do at me?"

Chen Afu rebuked him and replied, "How could that be! You’re far better looking than the box. When I see you, not only does my face smile, but my heart smiles too."

Chu Lingxuan burst into laughter, gently pecked her on her cheek, and said, "Hmm, your husband loves to hear that." He continued, "We should stop calling me ’sir’. It’s too impersonal."

Chen Afu reacted with surprise, "I didn’t know the lady of the house also called Lord Chu ’Chu Lang’. It must be a term of endearment filled with love. It’s unfortunate that Princess Rong Zhao also calls Lord Chu ’Chu Lang’. It now sounds so nauseating."

After speaking, she even crinkled her nose in distaste.

She truly disliked hearing the term "Chu Lang". Every time she heard Princess Rong Zhao call Marquis Chu by that name in her sweet, innocent voice, she got goosebumps. It was downright nauseating how the old woman, clearly a shrew, tried to act demure and delicate.

Chu Lingxuan’s expression darkened slightly as he said, "That woman learnt it from my mother... Forget it, let’s not talk about her. It spoils my mood."

Chen Afu then asked, "So, what should I call you? Lingxuan? Xuanxuan?" It didn’t seem like it would be appropriate to use courtesy names in this era.

Chu Lingxuan thought about it seriously and said, "Afu, just call me Lingxuan." Initially, he had wanted Afu to call him Xuan Lang, but seeing her aversion to the term "Chu Lang", he no longer wished for that.

Chen Afu nodded in agreement.

The two lay down to rest, enjoying their sweet, romantic moment together.

The next day, before dawn, Chen Afu was already up. She planned to make mango egg tarts and needed to get some ingredients from her space.

Seeing that Chu Lingxuan was still in deep sleep, she cautiously went into the clean room, locked the door, and quickly entered her space.

It was quiet inside the space. Without seeing Jin Yanzi, who was usually on guard, Chen Afu called out a few times, "Baby, baby..."

"I’m here, Mommy. Please stop calling me." Jin Yanzi poked her little head out from a small golden house.

"Why didn’t you..." Chen Afu immediately stopped herself from asking the question.

Jin Yanzi suddenly flew out, chirping cheerfully, "Mommy, were you about to ask why I didn’t get a nosebleed after listening to you two from the corner? Well, I found a great solution. The moment you two start to get it on, I just dip my head in the water, and I don’t hear a thing."

Seeing the little guy’s self-satisfied expression, as if expecting praise for its "cleverness", Chen Afu rolled her eyes and chided, "How could you be so blunt? Don’t you know what embarrassment is?"

With her drowsy green eyes, Jin Yanzi rolled her eyes too, and retorted, "You can do it, so why can’t I talk about it? What a double standard."

Chen Afu had no rebuttal. The little creature was too knowledgeable about some things but fundamentally lacked an understanding of social etiquette. The imbalance in its knowledge made it a walking contradiction.

Realizing that she was there to ask for a favor, she tried to soften her tone, "Okay, okay, you’re right. Baby, could you give mommy a little bit of Yan Chenxiang Wood debris? Mommy wants to make a pastry for the Empress Dowager." As she spoke, she took out a handkerchief and began to wipe away the dried mucus from the little creature’s eyes.

Feeling that her hand was slightly heavy, Jin Yanzi pushed it away with her wing and said, "Mommy, you’ve been using the Yan Chenxiang quite frequently these past couple of days. Since it’s for the Empress Dowager today, I’ll give you some. But you can’t keep asking for it all the time."

It seemed like she had been asking for it quite frequently lately. Chen Afu planned to bring in a bowl of water next time and soak some Yan Chenxiang in it. Then, she could just use that water as a flavor enhancer when needed.

Chen Afu successfully got a small piece of Yan Chenxiang. Upon noticing that the construction work on the ground had barely progressed, she asked, "Baby, have you been slacking off lately?"

Jin Yanzi sighed, "Sigh, I’m growing up. These days, I’ve been busy exploring the true meaning of life. I’ve been pondering whether the egg or the bird came first and haven’t been able to figure it out. I don’t have time to do any construction."

After speaking, it climbed next to a golden shell, leaned on one wing, and began to contemplate.

Watching Jin Yanzi, Chen Afu realized that it was not only maturing physically but also mentally. She didn’t disrupt its exploration and exited the space.

She prepared more than what she had made the day before, sending two pieces to each master and an extra forty pieces to Mrs. Chu.

Once she finished her tasks, Chen Afu suggested visiting the Hongyun Hot Pot Shop to meet Chen Ayu and Yang Mingyuan’s family. However, Chu Lingxuan suggested her to wait for a couple more days because he had already requested for her elevation to a position of nobility. The Imperial decree would probably arrive in the next few days.

Seeing Chen Afu looking a bit disappointed, he said, "I’ll send someone to bring Ayu over."

Before he could send someone to get Chen Ayu, a senior servant from the Outer Court reported that the Prince Rui, Princess Rui, and their second son had arrived. Prince Rui had been asked to a bookroom in the Outer Court, while the Princess and their son were on their way to Bamboo Pavilion.

Upon hearing this, Chu Lingxuan instantly rose and hurried towards the Outer Court.

Chen Afu also prepared herself to meet the guests. Prince Rui and his wife were somewhat unexpectedly humble. Chu Lingxuan had initially planned to invite them to dine at the restaurant in a few days, but they took the initiative and came over themselves.
