Chapter 231: Chapter 230: Going Out is Unfavourable
Mr. Bai stared at the headdress for a moment, picked up a hairpin to inspect, and then said, "If I remember correctly, this was sold in our Silver Tower last month for three hundred fifty taels of silver. If Miss wants to resell it, it won’t fetch the same price. I can only offer you two hundred and eighty taels."
She was docked twenty percent, which was within acceptable range, Chen Afu nodded in agreement.
Mr. Bai still felt a bit regretful, as he had only made a profit of seventy taels on this deal.
Chen Afu’s heart ached even more as she saw Mr. Bai shift the brocade box towards her. The haunting image of Chen Shiying, her mirror image, crying with ruddy eyes and his desperate attempts to win her favor flashed before her eyes... She couldn’t believe her own heart could ache like this!
Subconsciously, she never considered herself as related to Chen Shiying. She considered him merely as the father of her Dingzhou speakers, with her only father being Chen Ming.
But realising the hurt she was about to deliberately inflict upon him, she felt such discomfort. Was this the innate connection of blood relations? Despite her not being the original body’s owner, this body, connected through blood, still originated from him.
She couldn’t deny it any longer, he was her biological father! Such a bond of blood was undeniably unbreakable.
Chen Shiying might not have been a good father, but he was indeed a father trying his best to reclaim his paternal affection. Unlike her mother who lost her humanity, he was reaching out to her in the best ways he could imagine...
Chen Afu quickly reached out to retrieve the brocade box. "No, I’ve changed my mind - I don’t want to sell it."
Mr. Bai looked at her with unexpected confusion. "Miss, what do you mean?" he asked.
Chen Afu said, "I’m sorry, Mr. Bai, but I can’t bring myself to sell it. I do have something else..."
As she was speaking, an anxious voice rang out from outside. "Mr. Bai, hurry, a nobleman is here."
Mr. Bai quickly got up and said to Chen Afu, "Wait here, or look around outside. We’ll continue our conversation after I’ve attended to the noble man."
Chen Afu nodded.
As Mr. Bai stepped out, a languid voice greeted him, "Does your Silver Tower have any particularly bright emeralds? I want that kind, however much you have."
Mr. Bai responded in a humble voice, "Sir, I’m sorry, we only had one such emerald which a customer brought in to sell. He sold us an emerald and three rubies, which have since been made into pieces of jewelry and sold. We are currently out of stock."
The languid voice asked again, "Do you know where I can find the person who sold these gems?"
Mr. Bai answered, "I-I don’t know, sir. They just left after selling and they never returned... ah, we do have other fine pieces of jewelry in our Silver Tower. Please, sir, I can bring some up for you."
Footsteps gradually faded away.
Chen Afu’s heart tightened upon hearing the description of a single emerald and three rubies. Could they be talking about the ones she sold here last year?
The gems she sold weren’t extraordinarily well-cut, but they were surely more radiant. How could this have happened? Thinking about it, perhaps those gems had absorbed some energy after being in her space for several years which resulted to a slight change. It’s just that she didn’t appreciate their value and had failed to notice.
Mr. Bai was indeed kind; he hadn’t turned her in but apparently signalled her to leave quickly.
Chen Afu reached into the bag that held the brocade box and quickly placed it inside her space. She was currently too vulnerable and unable to risk carrying certain items.
As she prepared to leave, Guard Wang and their other guards arrived and Guard Wang whispered, "Miss Chen, the man who just arrived is a nobleman from the Capital City."
Chen Afu’s body seized in fear. She stood up and said, "Never mind, we’re not selling anymore. Let’s go home quickly."
As they exited the room, they saw several guards stationed by the entrance of the Silver Tower.
Escaping with her head bent low, Chen Afu bumped straight into the last person she wanted to see, Chen Yuhui.
What an unlucky outing!
Chen Yuhui also noticed Chen Afu. Of all the people, she hated Chen Afu the most. In countless dreams, she dreamt about ripping her mouth open. She, who dared to call her ugly, must face retribution for the humiliation she had inflicted on her in Dingzhou.
She quickly walked up to Chen Afu and said, "Well if it isn’t Chen Afu! What a small world we live in, we meet again."
Chen Afu intended to ignore her and moved to the side to pass her.
Chen Yuhui felt Chen Afu’s hasty movement was due to her fear. She quickly blocked Chen Afu again and said, "What’s the rush? Weren’t you so good at talking back? You thought you could just insult me and get away! I swear I’ll rip your wretched mouth apart today." After finishing, she turned to her two maids and said, "Beat her, rip her mouth apart."
Just as they were about to launch themselves, they were blocked by Xue Dagui, Xia Yue, and Qiu Yue. Guard Wang barked, "Try to lay a finger on Miss Chen and I’ll break your hands."
Chen Yuhui was furious and was about to declare her identity when a guard stationed at the entrance intervened.
He said, "Look at yourselves, such a dishonour for grown men to be involved in a petty skirmish between young ladies." He pointed at Xue Dagui and Chu Xiaoniu, "You two gentlemen, step back and let’s see who wins this catfight."
As soon as he finished, the other guards burst out laughing.
Guard Wang quickly saluted with a fist and said, "My lord, it’s not our lady who wants to fight. The other lady is being absolutely unreasonable."
Chen Yuhui had only two maids and two older women accompanying her, and had left her guardians back home. She got a little fearful seeing Xue Dagui and Guard Wang guarding Chen Afu. Spotting a few men dressed in military uniforms by the entrance made her even more scared. If a fight were to break out there, she was not only at a disadvantage, but her reputation would be ruined. She cursed herself for being too focused on Chen Afu to realize there were other men outside the entrance.
Chen Afu quickly moved around Chen Yuhui and made her way outside. A languid voice from behind said, "Hold on, I’d like to see who’s bold enough to start a fight in the middle of the street."
Chen Afu stood there cursing Chen Yuhui under her breath, head bowed, without turning around.
An aristocratic young man in his twenties stepped out of the Silver Tower, tall and thin, wearing expensive clothes with a purple golden coronet on his head.
He looked over Chen Yuhui then turned to Chen Afu, observing her from head to toe. A hint of smile flashed at the corner of his mouth and he said, "A Northern beauty stands out in this world... She certainly is handsome. One glance at this young girl and you can see she’s gentle and virtuous, she must not have started the fight." Pointing at Chen Yuhui with his fan, he said, "Was it her who started the trouble? If you say it’s her, I’ll vent your anger for you."
His voice was languid and cold, causing those who heard it to feel uncomfortable.
