Chapter 164: Chapter 1964: Search

"Damn his ancestors, they would turn in their graves if they saw this."

"Shit, let’s just search everyone; I don’t believe we can’t find the heartless bastard."

...

The crowd was furiously indignant, loudly demanding that the human trafficker be found and beaten to death.

People living nearby had long heard the commotion, and now adults clung tightly to their children, afraid to let go.

They feared that loosening their grip would lead to their children being snatched away by the human trafficker.

On the train, everyone acted with unprecedented anger and unity; those with children kept close watch over them.

Those without children were calling for the train staff to lead a thorough check of everyone, insisting that doors remain closed until the human trafficker was found.

By then, the train’s police had arrived and, after being briefed on the situation, immediately communicated with the train conductor.

After some negotiation, they decided to mobilize able-bodied passengers to join the train staff in a search operation.

They also alerted other carriage attendants and police to be on the lookout for any suspicious individuals, to report promptly without alerting them, and to keep a close eye.

Meanwhile, in the hard-seat carriage, a group of people stealthily placed a large sack at the connection between two train carriages.

"How’s it going?"

"Everything’s smooth; just waiting to unload at the next station."

"What about Old Mrs. Wang?"

"She’s over there, scouting for more goods to snatch before the next stop."

"Alright, be careful not to draw the attention of the train police."

"Don’t worry, bro; we’re all experienced."

...

"Officer, I’ll come with you to check the hard-seat carriage shortly; your uniforms might draw the human trafficker’s attention," Lu Xiaoting immediately stepped forward and said.

"And you are?"

"Hello, officer, my name is Lu Xiaoting, and I’m a public security officer from Meng Province."

The train police, after inspecting Lu Xiaoting’s credentials, showed a slight smile amidst their serious expression.

"So you’re Mr. Lu; please come with us."

Lu Xiaoting nodded, "Officer, let me just inform my family first, so they don’t worry."

"Of course, Mr. Lu, go ahead; we’ll start organizing things here."

"What’s going on? You all seem uneasy," Susu frowned.

Lu Xiaoting briefly explained there was a human trafficker on the train and urged everyone to stay alert.

"Cheng He, come with me; Mr. Guoming, please stay here and look after your sister-in-law and Xiao Nian. And ladies, please don’t wander off alone or trust anyone else."

Huang Dawei loosened his grip on his briefcase, "Mr. Lu, don’t worry; I’m staying here until you return."

"Alright, keep an eye out, everyone."

"Yeah, both of you be careful."

...

"Cheng He, if you notice anything suspicious, don’t act recklessly, just find me," Lu Xiaoting instructed, still sounding anxious.

Su Chenghe’s heart was pounding nervously, "Got it, Big Brother."

"Officer, this is my brother, Su Chenghe; he’s here to help too."

"Great, thanks to Mr. Lu and Mr. Su."

The group split up and headed towards the hard-seat carriages.

With no time to lose, staff members were already leading able-bodied men in an urgent search of the sleeper carriages.

Fearing they might alert their target, they made up an excuse, claiming a passenger had lost valuable items.

These days, everyone is very helpful; upon hearing that someone lost a valuable gold ring, they immediately helped search under the beds.

Whenever the conductor saw a large parcel, he pretended to help but actually felt the parcel for children hidden inside.

If anyone was not cooperative, other eager and warm-hearted passengers quickly stepped in without needing the conductor to say anything.

Thus, the search in the sleeper carriage went very smoothly.

"Sister, I need to use the bathroom."

Su Nian had drunk a lot of water and, coupled with her nervous state, could barely hold it in.

"Little sister, I’ll come with you," Zhang Guoming said, not feeling reassured.

"It’s okay, just watch our things, we’ll be back quickly."

The two ran hand in hand to the bathroom entrance; for some reason, Susu felt a chilling panic overtake her.

Susu crossed her arms and casually glanced around.

However, there was nothing unusual about the people nearby.

Yet that chilling feeling wouldn’t leave, and Susu, feeling uneasy, quickly finished in the bathroom and hurried back with her sister.

Perhaps it was a woman’s sixth sense, but Susu looked at everyone as if they were all suspicious, and couldn’t help but quicken her pace.

"Sister?"

"Hurry, I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like we are being watched."

Hearing her sister’s words, Su Nian panicked and hurried even more.

The two sat back in their own seats and heaved a sigh of relief.

"What’s going on? Did someone follow you guys?" Zhang Guoming’s heart skipped a beat.

Scene shift

Lu Xiaoting and Su Chenghe casually moved through the ordinary seating carriage, scanning the seated and standing passengers with sharp eyes.

Maybe the news hadn’t reached this area yet; the people showed no signs of unease, some chatting and laughing, others dozing off in their seats.

The two were extremely anxious, realizing that if they didn’t find the person by the next station, the human trafficker might escape.

Having found nothing so far, the two had to coordinate with the train police.

After discussing again, they decided to let the train police take a first pass, pretending to check tickets.

Following behind, they closely watched for anyone who seemed overly nervous as they might very well be the human trafficker they were looking for.

No sooner had they planned this than the train police, together with the conductor, began their operation.

Before they could locate the human trafficker, they instead found several people skipping on fares.

To avoid blowing their cover, they still had to deal with the complaints and handle fare collection even among the grumbling crowd.

Lu Xiaoting, trailing some distance behind, kept a sharp eye on everyone.

In the sleeper carriage

Susu and her companions remained alert, in no mood to talk anymore.

At that moment, an old lady with a mole on her face sat down smiling warmly, appearing very kind and amiable.

"Are you two little girls sisters? You look so alike, clearly from the same parents. You both have such lovely faces. Where are you headed?"

Seeing the overly familiar, smiling old lady, Susu’s insides felt like a squeezed squeaky toy, as if someone had stepped on its tail, causing it to shriek uncontrollably.

Looking at the smiling old lady, Susu felt a chill run down her spine.

Huang Dawei found Mr. Su’s behavior odd but engaged in polite conversation with the friendly old lady.

"Are you traveling alone, ma’am?"

"Oh, not at all; it’s just that a child was born in the family, and I’m heading there to help take care of the baby. Actually, this is my first time traveling out as well."
