Chapter 160: Chapter 160 still secretly calls you Chongxi Sister-in-law.
Maybe it was hunger. The whole day had been stifling hot, and none of them had eaten much. Now, even the train’s boxed meals were irresistibly delicious.
Besides the rice and dish Susu left, which her own man had completely devoured, the rest of them had cleaned their plates, not even leaving a single morsel behind.
During the three days of travel, other than eating and sleeping, Su Nian’s initial excitement gradually wilted.
Fortunately, on the morning of the third day, the train finally arrived in Yangcheng.
Stepping off the train, they all immediately felt the humidity; the air was damp.
"Sister, this is Yangcheng? So many people, and it feels like it has just rained—so humid."
Accustomed to the dry heat of summer back home, everyone was clearly uncomfortable, feeling as if their clothes were damp.
Brother Lu had taken the morning off work after receiving a call to time their arrival, and Jiang Nan had also taken a break from her boxed meal business.
The couple had arrived at the station early and were now anxiously scanning the faces of the people coming out.
Anxious not to miss their family amidst the crowd, they were wide-eyed with anticipation.
Just when the couple started to worry they might have missed them, the five figures appeared at the exit.
Lu Xiaoting immediately spotted his much darker brother.
"Brother, elder sister-in-law."
"Little brother, sister-in-law. Cheng He."
They exchanged excited greetings at the exit.
"Brother, elder sister-in-law, how long have you been here? You haven’t been waiting too long, have you?"
"No, no, we timed it just right," Brother Lu said with a smile.
"Stop talking already, let’s go get something to eat," Jiang Nan said with a roll of her eyes at her husband who wouldn’t stop talking.
Brother Lu slapped his head, "Right, right, right, silly me. Let’s go, we’ll eat first."
Jiang Nan chuckled as she went to pull the sisters. "You must be tired from the trip, let’s eat early and find a hostel to rest a bit."
Susu shook her head, "It’s okay. But sister-in-law, don’t you sell boxed lunches at noon? It won’t affect you and my brother making money at your jobs, will it?"
"No problem at all, missing a morning won’t matter. We’re too happy to have you here, and it’s not a big delay anyway."
Jiang Nan’s smile was so wide her eyes were nearly shut. After hearing the unintelligible babble of Southern dialects for so long, seeing her own family made her incredibly happy.
"You wouldn’t believe it, when we first arrived, we couldn’t understand anything people said. They could’ve been cursing us, and we’d just stand there grinning like fools."
Su Nian frowned, "That’s terrible, why would they curse at someone."
"Oh, there are all sorts of people. But it’s not like everyone is out to get us; there are many who help too," Jiang Nan waved dismissively, not too concerned.
Susu nodded, "Yeah, there are good and bad people everywhere, can’t just lump them all together."
"You have no idea, when I first came here I couldn’t get used to it at all, with the humidity and weather. In the spring, you could hang a washed piece of clothing out to dry, and it would mold before ever getting dry."
Brother Lu laughed, his white teeth standing out even more against his darkened face.
"My goodness, that sounds horrifying."
"Indeed, and then there are the quilts and mattresses..."
...
The group went to a shop that sold braised rice dishes, each ordering a serving for themselves, accompanied by roast chicken that Brother Lu had specially purchased that morning from a century-old shop.
"Our dad is now officially retired. He’s not finding it hard to adjust, is he?" Brother Lu asked.
"No, the old man wanders around the alley with his grandchildren every day, always beaming with joy. He’s really happy," Susu said.
"That’s true. Our mom is with us siblings in Provincial City, and dad is home alone; he’s pretty good, considering he’s retired."
"Brother and elder sister-in-law, how’s the lunchbox business doing? I heard from mom that it’s quite booming?" Susu was a bit curious.
Jiang Nan was happy too, "It’s okay, I go out to buy groceries and cook early every day. Sixty meals a day and with your brother selling them, it’s quite comfortable."
...
After the meal, Susu pulled out the letters Xiao Yu and Xiao Xue, the sisters, had written for the elder sister-in-law.
"Elder sister-in-law, these letters are from the kids when I was coming. They asked me to bring them for you and brother, and these are some photos we recently took at the photo studio."
"Thank you, thank you, younger sister-in-law."
Jiang Nan looked at the photos of the girls dressed in beautiful and fashionable dresses, both with matching braids, looking very carefully dolled up.
The two sisters in the photos had brilliant smiles, seemingly grown taller, looking like they were living a very good life. Otherwise, their smiles wouldn’t look like this.
Jiang Nan and Brother Lu hurried to open the letters from their daughters. The handwriting was neat, constantly reminding their parents to take care of their health, saying that everyone in the family was especially nice.
Especially, especially, especially... they liked everyone at home—grandma, grandpa, the uncle, the aunt, brother, sister, Little Aunt... and so on.
Jiang Nan’s tears streamed down as she babbled, holding younger brother and sister-in-law’s hand.
"Susu, thank you, thank you so much, elder sister-in-law thank you for being so good to the kids."
"Thank you for not holding on to the past regardless of those stupid things I did. I was just jealous that mom, dad, and everyone at home were good to you, and I called you names behind your back, like Chongxi Sister-in-law."
"If it weren’t for your goodness... it was all my fault, please forgive me."
Susu couldn’t help but give a tearful laugh at the incoherent elder sister-in-law, passing her a tissue.
"It’s okay, elder sister-in-law, let’s not dwell on the past and look forward."
"Mhmm, mhmm, I’ll listen to you, younger sister-in-law."
The two brothers were also laughing through tears, Brother Lu didn’t want to be laughed at at his age by his younger brother, so he held back the tears welling in his eyes.
Lu Xiaoting looked at his playful wife, his thin lips curving into a nice arc.
After the group had their fill, Lu Xiaoting found out that his elder sister-in-law had paid the bill right after they entered the restaurant.
Brother Lu had only taken the morning off; he had to go back to work in the afternoon, so the couple left after eating.
Susu and the others rented two guest rooms, took a break to rest and freshen up, preparing to go to the wholesale market in the afternoon.
After a nap, the five of them took the bus to the wholesale market.
Aside from the three who were familiar with the place, Zhang Guoming and Su Nian, who were visiting Yangcheng for the first time, curiously looked at the various street scenes and passersby outside the window.
As they watched the flowing crowds, many pushing carts laden with goods and others carrying large and small packages, Su Nian’s mouth couldn’t close, her round eyes wide in amazement.
"There are a lot of people inside, Nian Nian, hold onto your sister’s arm tightly."
Su Nian nodded, "Okay, I got it, sis."
Even though they were prepared, as soon as they entered and saw the myriad of shops and people carrying large and small packages haggling, even Zhang Guoming was incredibly shocked.
Su He stared wide-eyed, her almond-shaped eyes nearly popping out, almost unable to take it all in.
Susu and the others first took a lap around; if they came across a particularly good shop, they would stop to ask. After so many trips, they had a fairly good idea about these things.
"How much for this cheongsam, boss?"
The female boss lay languidly in her chair, hardly flicking a lid.
"5 bucks."
